FF14 First Impressions after 15 years of WoW – Day 2 – FFXIV MSQ, Player Housing and Sprout

FF14 First Impressions.
I’ve played WoW for over 15 years but given the state of WoW and the lack of content, I wanted to give FF14 a try and join some of my friends that left to play it. So here are my day 2 FF14 first impressions, and feedback as we progress through the game!

Throughout I will be comparing FFXIV to WoW and other MMORPGs.

I’m really enjoying the game so far and I’m really enjoying recording/documenting the progress through the game. Thank you all so much for your support on the first FFXIV video, I’ll link it below if anyone wants to watch from the start:

  1. Looks a little more anime-y, ESO is a decent play too, but the combat is much more clicky with attack -> animation canceling, DPS parses are critical for participating in anything endgame

  2. I've actually gone back to WoW after being away for a few years and I am LOVING being able to pick which in-game time period/xpac I can play in, as well as being able to unlock extra Allied Races on each side. (Yes, I went for the absurdly adorable Vulpera first… did my icon here give that away?) The QoL and leveling progression is so much improved (especially in modern content) over what it was when I last played in MoP. That being said — I will be back in FFXIV once Endwalker drops. Just needed my usual break after playing hard in any MMO for 1-2 years. Also glad to see you are enjoying XIV. WoW is fantastic in its own right. I love the deep lore of both games and the love that the developers put into them both.

The Smith questlines are excellent instruction for basic play in your class/job's role, and you get decent gear for having completed it. And yes… I know about being sidetracked. The crafting and gathering minigames in XIV are unlike anything I have seen in any other MMO. The higher levels you get in them, the more things open up. It's a huge draw for me, but maybe not for everyone. The good news is that you can actually make a ton of Gil by gathering or crafting certain things, so it's not wasted effort!

Crafting/gathering storylines can also get compelling. There is actual story to them all — none of them are boring. There's drama and hooks to keep you going along with your progressing through the jobs. My faves are Botanist, Alchemist, and Culinarian. The Fishing quests have several Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series references, so yay for that, too! I have done all the crafting and gathering questlines to max level so I can say they are all at least somewhat interesting.

  3. I'm not sure if you're still playing, but as a semi-new player (started just under a year ago but got a lot of playtime and very close to end of MSQ) – you mention being very confused at the story… The first set of story levels (up until level 50) are a bit confusing and not FANTASTIC…. the expansion from 50-60 is when it makes sense and story is absolutely incredible… HANG IN THERE!

Side note: housing still sounds terrifying to me

  4. Coming back, watching all your stuff now. Some really good takes here, and welcome to the game! Also, I see the crafting and gathering addiction setting in. It's already begun…

  5. I'm watching various FF14 videos while downloading the game. I've been a WoW player off and on since the week of my 39th birthday, 2 months before the release of TBC. I'm 53 now. I have such wonderful memories of playing that game with my kids, who are all grown and gone now, with busy adult lives. Now it's time for me to make new memories in a new world. It sounds like this one has a lot to offer a player like me.

  6. I recently played FFXIV for the first time as a 12 year WoW (now refugee) and what I found in the case of black mage is it's crazy awesome at level 50 (but NOT EARLY LEVELS)- and I preferred that over anything WoW is offering in Shadowlands by miles

  7. if you're unable to get a house you can get an apartment and still decorate it any way you want and it'll be there forever. You need to have one class at level 50 and be a second lieutenant in your grand company to purchase one for 500,00 Gil. 🙂

  8. Bruh! You're gonna love lancer/drg at some point. I'm a drg main but it is really a slow start but once you get higher level, man it's so much fun. I'm currently on a hiatus from ff14 but watching your vids makes me wanna come back asap.

  9. Not gonna lie. My youtube feed is full of "WoW player or GW2 player first impression of FFXIV" videos. And you know what? I love it. I love seeing and hearing the opinion of a player from the outside, what they think of a game I enjoy coming from other games I also enjoy. I honestly can't get enough of these videos and love seeing the progression and how people invest into XIV.

  11. The housing system is insanely weird in this game, and sadly only a limited number of houses exist. However, anyone can get a room if their FC/Guild owns a house, and it's also quite easy to get an apartment.

However if you DO get a house/room/apartment, the actual system for decorations is the best in any MMO I have played.
There are SO many furniture items, many crafted by players, that you can use. My own Medium sized house is my pride and joy, and I have sunk in way more time and Gil into it than I care to admit…

Oh, and if you get an aquarium in there, you can put in fish you catch (or buy), which is cool if you like hunting rare fish.

  12. Man Star Wars Galaxies would have blown you away. The amount of freedom you have as a player was insane. Players with crazy houses, literally player made cities.

  13. Scrolling through the comments as bit, I don't see anyone correcting this: "Once you finish up to the end level with once class, the other classes become easier to skill up" is not quite correct, though that is a common misunderstanding. It's called the Armoury Bonus, and it's part of that (+%###) EXP modifier you see in the chat log whenever you kill a mob. It's not related to having a max level character at all, it's a bonus you get any time you're killing things on a combat class that's not your highest level class. So yes it's for bringing up alts, but it works just as well to play catchup to a Lv30 "highest level" as it does to a Lv80 max.

  14. Ok I’ve been playing again the last couple of days and I didn’t realize the Novice Training was so useful! Your videos are helping out a new player over here! I’m def gonna get on that training next time I play.

  16. it was lucky that he started in Gridania, which imo is the "classic" RPG and fun starting city to begin with… the other starter 2 cities work better as the next areas you explore after learning the fundamentals

  17. I def remember that feeling of growing attached to the starting area and feeling a little anxious leaving, especially as it throws you through both the other main starting cities.
I think I got lost in Ul'dah for like an hour looking for the aetherite xc

  18. So in the future you'll get more of a look at the housing system. I have a lot of good things to say about the game and about housing, but the housing system in general is one of the big places FFXIV has fallen short of other games. Housing can be either Free Company (guild) or personal and Free Companies and individuals fight for plots, especially the larger ones. It can be difficult to get a house on some servers at all, and housing wars where people stand for hours clicking in hopes of getting a house do happen. On other servers it might be much easier to get a plot. There are 'apartments', which is a single room you can decorate in the housing ward, just in case you couldn't get a plot of land. Despite these issues, you can decorate your house pretty freely, there are tons of items to help with that, and you can even customize the outside of your house and decorate your yard. So some good, some bad.

  19. If you're leveling your crafting, quick synthesis only gives you half the exp. Best to do it manually if you want to level faster and aim for HQ versions of the material you're making as that doubles the exp. The best way to level up quickly is to do the crafting leves! (also good way to make easy gil).

  20. Keep on crafting all the items, There are actually achievements for doing that. Then as you start leveling another class you can craft the gear instead of buying and spending thousands of gil gear
