FF14 First impression – where's the plot??

It’s time to dabble in another famous community I’ve seen fellow Monster Hunter fans fall to: Final Fantasy 14

  1. For armor, you can make glamour sets (the game's version of transmog from world of warcraft) using glamour crystals and/or glamour dresser in your inn room. Though, I think there is an introductory quest for glamour.

  2. Starting ARR: This game is so slow and uninteresting

Finishing EW: I'm so happy I played ARR and went through the story that was building up to Endwalker

Seriously, ARR may seem uninteresting and unimportant right now, but once you reach Endwalker, everything you went through in ARR does play a legit important role down the road.

  3. The main problem for me with a realm reborn is the Dev's focused more on the mmo aspect instead of the final fantasy aspect and because of that the whole expansion feels separated into different barely conjoining parts until the 2.1 patches and above.

  4. Re: armor, I'd recommend talking to the Smith (the person dressed in green) at the inn. He'll give you a set of quick tutorial fights that will unlock a full set of decent looking armor with good stats.

  5. FFXIV is a bit of an odd one for me. I gave up on it originally back in ARR, but was convinced to try again and soldier through. And yeah. When Heavensward kicks into gear it gets a lot better. Shadowbringers is actually one of my all time favourite narratives. This is coming from someone who usually hates Final fantasy stories.

  6. Welcome to FF14! In case this wasn't mentioned before, regarding the HUD layout; as there are no (supported) mods, customizing the HUD is built right into the game so you can adjust how it appears and feels by yourself. Also, regarding mods….there's a big "don't talk about it" mentality when it comes to them. I use them personally, mostly for glamour reasons, but SQX has a very firm stance of not accepting them. So if you do end up using them, you can't use them while you stream or talk about them in-game.

  7. I personally do not like to replay ARR for a good reason but it puts in SO MUCH groundwork for the rest of the entire story and it will keep coming back to it continuously. ARR is very slow and back and for before the payoff finally hits right at the end and you get catapulted into much more linear plots for the rest of the game that had me hooked.
Sometimes a foundation isn't pretty to look at but if it's solid enough, it'll stand up for years to come. Which is pretty much the best way I can describe ARR and so far it absolutely has held up the rest of the story.

  8. I look forward to hearing from you once you hit HW.

I agree the story is a bit arduous for the first 40ish levels, but if you stick with it, you will absolutely find the Final Fantasy story you're looking for.

  9. If game stories were houses, FF14’s would be a Cathedral. And like any Cathedral, it requires a massive, solidly built foundation. ARR is the foundation, and you will be glad that it’s there soon enough.

  10. Yeah, I'm surprised people wanted you to watch the 1.0 trailer too. I don't think most current players has ever seen that trailer, because it has almost nothing to do with the game as it is now.

  11. As others have said, ARR is truly an investment, loads of world building and set up that pays off massively in all the rest of the expansions. It's def a hard sell because of that since you just have to believe fans that the expansion stories make it worth it but for me, it ends up having easily the best MMO story ever and the arch is better than most single player games even, but I can't fault anyone that isn't down to gamble with the time investment either.

  12. The first 20ish levels are basically the arc of "adventurer without any real responsibilities and worries", mostly. Some might call it worldbuilding… but there really isn't any less world building in the later stages of the game, it's just combined with more stakes.
