  1. I remember the Energy Drain thing from SHB because it, and a bunch of other job changes, were part of what made me stop playing for most of that expansion.

  2. Here's an idea for Eos and Selene. If you summon Eos, you get an increase in healing potency. If you summon Selene, you get an increase in shielding potency, That way you don't have to change the kit but give each fairy its independent use.

  3. I could be mistaking it, but I could have sworn that lustrate at one point healed 1/3rd of the hp, cause I remember it lining up with the mind set of "since aetherflow gives 3 stacks, and just use in lustrate 3 times in cleric for full heal", but as said I could be misremembering

  4. Don’t worry Happs, I don’t think Any other scholars liked fey Union either, cause I never see it get used! I use it all the time as SCH, cause there’s like no other use for ur fairy-gauge 🤷‍♂️and it’s just 1 more heal-tool which saves from casting gcd adlo’s on a single target.

And also, YOU’RE not Crazy! I also remember them removing energy drain, cause even as a casual healer, I very much remember how much it would impact Sch mp regen. Cause spamming broil and art of war, lucid dreaming hardly makes up for it.. lucid basically stops ur mp bar from dropping any further, but didn’t help to recover it.. then it wares off and u’re again, lacking for mp 🤦‍♂️

  5. So, really minor thing but to save anyone else from having to run down the rabbit hole I went down, Succor II WAS a thing in ARR, and actually was listed on the Scholar page of the console games wiki (August 28th 2013) if you want to check for yourselves.

So "Succur" was the level 30 single target heal and shield, also known now as Adloquium, "Succur II" was the Succor as we know it today, aoe heal and shield for the party, available at level 35.

I went looking for other sources too and found a reddit post from early August 2013 that included an imgur link to the tooltips and I also found a blog post from the lodestone on 31st August 2013 that was talking about using Succor and Succor II in a duty to heal and describes the abilities. Links for these below.

To be clear, not a dig at Haps for the comment on Succor II, I don't expect him to have 100% accurate memory for all jobs over 10 years, just wanted to share.

  6. I seem to recall that when broil was buffed in late shadowbringers they nerfed energy drain from 150 to 100 potency? Weird that it doesn’t reflect that on the page

  7. Some things to note:
    – Yes, SCH could cross class Protect from CNJ in ARR, but only WHM had a trait that let it also increase magic defense on top of the base physical defense. So while SCH could also cast it, WHM's Protect was better and was always used. It got changed in HW so that the Protect from all 3 healer was the same.
    – You forgot to tell that before ShB Dissipation did not recall your fairy after the effect ended, so you had to resummon your Fairy afterwards and it was a 6 sec cast time back then, so if you did not use Swiftcast for Summon you had to do the long cast time. That made Dissipation way harder to use than it is nowadays.
    – You remembered right, Energy Drain got removed in 5.0, but got added back in in 5.05, 4 weeks later when Eden's Gate (Savage) came out because of the outcry of every SCH ever (not an exaggeration, believe me).

  8. Tbh SCH is my fav healer but I HATE how their skills are being moved to more of a technology look to them. The old aoe had like a ring of thorns and a dark purple look to this circuit board blue/black. And the single target had that poison/infection look and their literally firing missals now. I just want all their skill to look more fae like. It started with Chain Strat and now their dps skills are also matching that thematic.

  9. Healing wise, I think SCH is my favorite. From recitation being pretty good, emergency tactics and deployment tactics, it all just clicks. DPS side… It is really hard to think that the last direct DPS ability SCH gets is from ARR still. It's a pretty boring job when there is no healing or shielding needed 🙁

  10. As much as I loved ffxiv healing (I was thm then whm in 1.0) i feel as though the abilities etc they add in each xpac do not make up for what they take away. And its been this way since HW. Each xpac healers have more and more of their kits and identity chipped away to where we are now: 1 dot, 1 st, and 1 aoe and a ton of unnecessary healing abilities or in the case of ast, cards that do not even follow job lore. I used to love dps on healer because it took real skill to pull off, but now frankly its boring. Tanks can self-heal and mitigate now to the point where it greatly offsets (not removes) the need for outside heals so youre basically spamming 1 spell and weaving in an ogcd here and there.

  11. As a SCH player: Yes, you're right. It was at the beginning of Shadowbringers that they took energy drain away from us but they gave it back pretty quick because there were plenty of times we were now overriding our aetherflow stacks without an offensive option to use them and that felt REALLY bad. On top of that I agree with you about the fairy gauge. That's my one gripe about this job left. I know in stormblood each job got some sort of gauge associated with it, but Scholar's feels so tacked on and unnecessary. The aetherpact skill can be nice at times, but unless I'm playing savage content I'm just sitting at 100 gauge all the time. In SHB at least with fey blessing costing 10 gauge I could see the number go up and down a little bit but when they took that away I'm left asking… what's the point? If you put aetherpact on a 2 or 3 minute cooldown with a duration of 20 or 30 seconds and just took the fairy gauge away it wouldn't make a difference. It would probably be better that way honestly. Either that or give me some other reason to use the fairy gauge.

  12. Yah at the start of shadowbrigners, we lost our energy drain and could only use stacks for healing stuff and just sorta sat on stacks at times by the time the next aetherflow came, so by the time the first patch came, they added that shit back so fast.

  13. One thing about Dissipation until Shadowbringers, YOU HAD TO RESUMMON YOUR PET AGAIN AFTER DISSIPATION ENDED! Summoner Eos and Summon Selene were 6 second casts, so unless you had swiftcast after it ended you were SOL. It's alot better these days, but it's still a hard skill to use in content you don't know. Also we definitely lost Energy drain at the start of shadowbringers, I remember not having it while leveling. We did get it back pretty quick though, maybe even as early as the 1st raid tier. Sacred Soil and Deployment Tactics got their ranges buffed before DSR for endwalker, but other then that hasn't changed much in endwalker besides the expedient change

  14. Scholar actually changed quite a lot going into Shadowbringers. It's just not that well-reflected here, because it's mostly stuff that got taken away, which in SE's job guides barely deserves a footnote. In many ways Scholar (and also the other healers) have become just too good at healing while the DPS kit has been more and more simplified. It has slowly but surely drained the fun out of playing scholar in any but the most dire situations.

  15. 1 other thing that isn't widely known is that Scholar could macro Embrace and have it always target the Main Tank and as you were casting you could hit the macro and have the fairy keep embracing the tank off cooldown before Shadowbringers came out. I knew this because I used that macro while doing prog for O12S and it was able to outpaced the bosses auto attacks pretty easily. The fairy pretty much gatlinged it out, it was hell on the hands but fuck if it didn't make thing s a tad bit easier. You can't do it anymore since they removed Rouse and the players ability to tell the fairy to embrace.

  16. I think SCHs were always buffed as much as they did because of the enormous popularity of WHMs regardless of how good SCHs are. WHMs are just played way more especially outside of the high end raiding scene and I guess SE really tried to make people love SCH more 😂

  17. I think Scholar is so consistently strong because of XIV’s general design philosophy and how clunky it is for less experienced players. All content needs to be clearable with any standard comp, so Scholar’s crazy damage reduction can’t be mandatory, making it extremely strong. And since Extremes and 24-man content could drop you into double Scholar parties, it had to be able to heal that content. And while it’s always been strong for Savage, it was extremely rough to play for newer players in casual content (stuff like MP issues, lack of direct healing tools, and the like), so the job’s casual tools and feel were buffed after every major nerf (especially mana and Energy Drain), and said buffs carried over into making it crazier in high end content.

I will say though, I’m not a fan of the post HW and especially post SB design. Losing all the dps tools made it feel incredibly boring during healing down time (which is most of the time in almost everything), and while each of the different capstone tools are powerful, their contradictory design feels bad for me, even if it’s a cool way to design it. Sage has filled the hole for me though, so I don’t mind Scholar’s current state as much as I did in ShB, though I do wish they’d give healers as a whole more dps tools to make casual content less tedious.

  18. when i got Sacred Soil for the first time, i seen the 90% and was like…this skill OP, not realizing the weird wording on it. so when i used it and still took lots of damage i was confused….i dont understand why they cant reword it so it says 'targets inside take 10% reduced damage' or something

  19. Something to say about SCH/AST(Noct) in SHB. Because Nocturnal opposition also stacked with Adlo/deploy, and also with seraph, it was extremely funny in raids/bozja to have heal buffs and the use of all the shields to make player take absolutely no damage. Also, the SHB meme of -100 mp on succor. Bring back 20 sec Expedient!

  20. SCH currently has the least interesting DPS abilities, just the default attack + DOT and Energy Drain, the ability that forces you to lose damage if you heal, something no other healer has to deal with. I love this job but man does it feel clunky.

  21. I’ve been waiting for this one!! I’m a scholar main but only joined near the end of shadowbringers so all of this is quite interesting! Glad my most extreme changes so far have been getting better fairy responsiveness and nyoom

  22. One thing to note in regards to the Enhanced Aetherflow trait, when it was first implemented the effect was random. The trait had a chance to reduce the recast time by 5 seconds, it wasn't guaranteed. It was changed because people said the effect was annoying.

Also when SB first launched, SCH had no AoE. Miasma II was added back in to address that issue.

  23. Scholar is probably the job that has aged the worst. I seriously miss HW and SB scholar. Keeping track of DoTs on a healer of all things felt so fun and unique and I hope against hope they’ll bring miasma, miasma II and shadowflare back in 7.0 in some form. Just no more broil spam.

  24. I had a vague memory of being VERY upset with SE for a nerf they gave to SCH when HSW was released. This video helped me remember! I was a dps-aholic and being able to lustrate while in cleric stance was amazing, but they changed lustrate to a potency spell and it became crap while in cleric! 😡 oh well, not like it matters these days but man ARR SCH was my absolute favorite job to play.

  25. One thing that this reminded me of was the point buys you had in arr and hw. I remember googling how to invest points when I started looking into summoner and scholar at the end of hw, then they removed it in sb.

  26. I will admit for the 2 months we didn't have Energy Drain, I resented people less for standing in stupid. I had a surplus of free healing resources. But outside of solo healing EXs, it felt bad overwriting stacks.
