I’m not an MMO person, normally, but maybe I can make a difference for the award winning game Final Fantasy XIV, with its free trial including gameplay up to lvl 60 and all the other stuff.

The crafting and FISHING are amazing in ffxiv. I've spent so much time just doing crafting and gathering that it's almost most of my game time now.
There's a special zone in the Stormblood expansion that's Eureka, and the weather does affect various enemy spawns, but other than fishing holes, weather does not affect much of creatures or monsters.
How long until Skyen becomes a full blown omnicrafter? Crafted armor/weapons definitely have their place in gear progression, even into the end game. Also, fun fact, crafters/gatherers have their own endgames and relic grinds!
"I'm not joining a FATE- wait, you're attacking a chocobo! Fuck you!"
This is why we love you, Skyen
So, just addressing random things brought up in the video!
Affinity on skills is something of a relic of previous eras of the game. It used to be possible to cross-class certain skills between classes and the affinity showed which classes each skill was available for. They've slowly phased that out over time, however, because of the necessity of levelling up multiple other classes to play your main class properly. For example Provoke was a Gladiator skill, but it was the only skill in the game that immediately took aggro by making your enmity slightly higher than the current highest enmity player… so a skill essential for all tanks. But if you were playing Marauder, you just didn't have access to Provoke until you levelled Gladiator up too. These essential skills they've since shifted to the 'Role Skills' it's mentioned before, but it still shows the affinity for every skill despite them pretty much universally being available only for one class/job. I guess this is a needlessly long way of saying it's relatively meaningless ='D
A Realm Reborn was originally running on PS3s alongside PCs, so a lot of these areas you'll come across in the first expansion's story were designed with 'PS3 limitations' (a lamentation often heard among the community at the time ^^;) in mind. There's definitely been marked improvements since they dropped PS3 support and hopefully that will begin to be reflected more and more as you work your way through the story and I expect eventually they'll make the push to drop PS4 support as well. The other main limitation they've had to work with, and is a big part of the reason that so many of the systems can feel at times a little clunky is that a good chunk of the code the game is built upon as a foundation is from the disastrous 1.0, the original build of the game before the rerelease. They didn't have a huge amount of time when they arranged the rerelease and so couldn't rebuild the entire game from scratch and had to start from 1.0 as a base. I'm sure work must have been done on resolving aspects of this over time as it's been 8 or so years now, but it's definitely hindered certain systems.
There's probably more to say, but I worry I'm rambling. Loving the videos! ^^
There are certain boss monsters who's appearance in a zone is heralded by a certain weather change. For example, there's a particular weather called 'Tension' which is really Really thick fog which heralds the arrival of the world boss & summon [Redacted]. But otherwise, weather won't affect common mob spawns.
Also, I can't help myself even though this isn't related to the above point: The 'sneeze' names we all laugh at are part of a conlang developed for the sea-wolf people. It looks hilarious and I love it to death. Each culture in the game actually has its own naming conventions and language-related messiness. Its a certain kind of charming, that level of devotion to developing several cultures in parallel in service to worldbuilding.
When you start getting real deep on crafting, the push your luck mechanics emerge and it can become a real fun mini game. Or when you need to maximise your odds of success, you start running Monte Carlo simulations to determine the best action sequences… People have made some amazing online tools!
Some tips:
1- You can just click the button with the 2 rotating arrows in your character screen to update your current gear to the gear set. No need to open the gear list, right click and update to do that.
2- The higher quality bar, the more exp you'll get crafting the item.
3- You don't need to finish the item at 10 durability. If your next synthesis action makes it go to or below 0 but the item is finished at that action, you'll still craft the item.
4- A little more advanced but you can make a macro (Esc-> User Macros) to make a bunch of stuff. You can get really creative with them. My favorite macro is basically a button that hides and shows some hotbars that have all of my jobs. That way I just click a button to open a "menu" to change my jobs. Keeps my UI clean without a bunch of hotbars to hold the jobs.
5- You can resize everything in your UI by going to HUD Layout -> selecting the UI element -> clicking the cog and choosing the size.
6- If you hold CTRL while you hover over an item you'll see what the HQ version looks like.
should always attune to the intercity aethernet, it helps getting around town a lot easier and when you grab them all you get additional aethernet points like the two that take you outside the city gates immediately and the much needed airship landing. gridania is unique in this that as you progress through the MSQ, that city actually has a third gate you can unlock at a later point. its around lv 30 or so, theres a quest for the White Wolf Gate near the main aetheryte.
ARR and the first expansion, Heavensward, were both limited by the PS3. Support wasn't dropped for PS3 until the second expansion, Stormblood. Stormblood and Shadowbringers are both able to do a lot more with PS4 limitations.
Oh god, after watching you fight that crab, i might need to teach you a bit of very important tank etiquette. Like, one of the few things that will get you yelled at levels of important. If you have aggro, make sure the boss moves as little as possible. Dps classes have directional moves that work best from the monster's back or side, which can be really hard to hit if the tank is running the monster around in circles. So, when tanking, stand still unless there is an aoe, and even then, try to keep movement to a minimum by moving back in front of the enemy when the attack is done. DON'T CIRCLE STRAFE. EVER. It's just a plain bad habit.
In terms of moving around while in combat as a tank you will mostly want to stay in one spot as all melee dps have what is called positionals.
Positionals are for certain or almost all moves, depending on the job, when they hit a boss on either the side(flank) or rear they get bonus damage and/or a certain benefit for them.
As a tank you want to be moving as little as possible for the melee to be able to hit those positional requirements for their ability rotations.
It is also a bit disorientating as a viewer to watch someone just running circles around a thing in game.
Another note you can fully customize your hud with at most 10 hotbars and many many other aspects if you so wish. You can set it up to your liking as it can drastically help you when trying to know where everything is and quickly get to it without going thru menus as each menu option can be dragged and placed as its own button on a hotbar. I would recommend researching how the hotbars work in the game so you dont too overwhelmed.
To end this massively long comment I am truly happy to see you playing one of my favorite games of all time and I do hope that you enjoy your stay in FFXIV.
The weather/day time does not have any effect on mobs from what I know. But time of day(in game) does have some effect in fishing and gathering.
And "Sightseeing Log"(I think that's the name) requires you to be at certain places during a specific time of day and a specific weather(rain, fog, etc.). But it's an extra system, not necessary.
Other comments have mentioned the useful stuff, so I comment on names. You started on the zone with probably the largest amount of silliest names, as Limsa Lominsa is mostly populated by Sea Wolf Roegadyns. Sea Wolf names are all combination words, with made up language. So for example Khanswys is Khan-swys, laugh-sister. But yes, despite how they seem all races and their subclans have naming conventions thought out.
I loved crafting when I still played. Just a little into crafting and you've already burnt through half your Gil.
the only other tank job you can acquire is Gladiator/Paladin atm, which is in Ul'dah. You need to progress in the MSQ to around Lv 15. as you started in Limsa, the only two combat jobs you can get is Arcanist and Rogue. The Arcanist splitting off into Summoner (Caster DPS) and Scholar (Healer). The Rogue becomes a Ninja (Melee DPS). The crafters are Armorer (as you know), Blacksmith, and Culinarian. The gatherer is Fisher. Each city has its own little bundle of jobs. As you travel around to the various city states, its good to familarize yourself with what class/job is where, if you find another job to be interesting.
Few notes, first no you cannot have a personal airship, those are a form of fast travel between the 3 starting cities (and one you'll get access later).
While you don't get a faster running speed, there's generally an aethernet net shard near any major points of interest in cities and outside of cities you can mount up and those are fairly quick, not mention some of the larger zones have more then 1 teleport location.
Fast travel is generally done via teleporting for a nominal fee (your passive income will quickly outpace the fee, especially since the fee is capped at 999 gil) in the world and for free inside a city.
Also you crafting skill determines what you can repair yourself (up to 199% durability meaning you only have to worry about that after wipes or if you've gone a long time without repairing), you can repair items if your crafting job level is the same as indicated by the item when you mouse over to check the stats, while leveling crafting can be expensive, the money saved in repairs and money you get from items you craft will pay for it in the long run.
Only halfway through the video but wanted to answer questions asked midway through before I forget what they were. If I have more to say later, it works towards the algorithm, right? I don't know how the metrics work.
Weather doesn't effect monster spawns except in two special optional areas in the game, Eureka and Bozja, which are level 70 and 80 zones respectively. It DOES effect fishing however.
There's no built-in run speed increase you get unfortunately. You do eventually get mounts, but the quest to unlock them is a level 20/21ish main story quest.
You can… sorta get an airship? Once you hit beat the last boss of the base game, you unlock flying for all mounts, and some mounts are ships, so that technically makes them an airship!
Bonus trivia time: All the races and their individual clans have their own unique naming schemes. The 'sneeze' names are Sea Wolf Roegadyn names, which are infamous for being the most 'wtf am I trying to read here?' but Seeker of the Sun Miqo'te and Hrothgar names are pretty up there too.
Click 'recommended gear' to the top left of where it says "GEAR SET" in your character window to instantly put on all your gear at once! (usually)
Oh for another tank you'd have to Travel to Ul'dah (IIRC you can't yet get Gunbreaker at this level(also you need Shadowbringers for that) and you can't get Dark Knight until you've done with MSQ for ARR and start with MSQ for Heavensward (obviously you need that expansion to do so)) which comes available once you do a few more MSQ quests as Ul'dah is where you train for Gladiator/Paladin.
I came here for FF14 stayed for wild Danish Pokemon song
All Sea Wolf Roegadyn names are actually a part of their own con-lang. For instance, the admiral of Limsa is named Merlwyb Blofyswyn, which means "sea-woman, daughter of blue-fish"
You are absolutely not the only one to see a bit of a dom in H'naanza. I love her so god damn much.
Regarding circle-strafing: the later you get, the less you want to do it. A lot of DPS jobs (Monk is almost 100% dependent on them, and Dragoon certainly benefits from it) rely on positional attacks on flanks and rear to be able to do their rotations properly, and the Tank is, in part, responsible for keeping the mob in one place for this.
Speaking of which, for more general Tanking 101 and for good gear that keeps you going through around lvl25, I recommend you do the Hall of the Novice when it opens up. The Brand New gear and Brand New Ring are USEFUL.
The weather affects very few "notorious" monsters that require it to spawn but it's mostly for fishing.
Glad to see you are getting into it even if it is just very base level content still. Looking forward to the series continuing!
*morphs into a small, green, round creature with cute little eyes and a wooden sword* … Qwest? QWEST!!!
I love this series so much! It is so great to see you explore the game, and your commentary is insightful as always! 11/10! ;D
Also, (just because i saw you skipping some helmet options) you CAN equip helmets/headgear, it is just that most of them won't show on your character model if you play rothgar/vierra – the stats are still very much there and circlets and eye patches still show on your model 🙂
First: You are a True Hero, thank you for rescuing our yellow feathered friends ♥
Second: In the City of Uldah you can Unlock the Gladiator Class the second Tank Class (the others are Expansion Tank Classes Dark Knight and Gunbreaker)
for weather types there are some events that need certain weather to trigger. Ixion and Odin I believe require a thunder storm? But you wont need to worry about those for a while
Bricc's gonna run out of money XD Once you venture to Ul'dah, you might want to pick up the Miner class, you can gather materials for Armouring instead of buying everything, and sell surplus on the marketboard.
And I know you said you feel like picking up another tank, but if you're willing to branch out into DPS, as a Monk main I have to recommend Pugilist. It fits the aesthetic of Big Beefy Boy Bricc, and the questline is just plain fun. But I'd caution against getting sidetracked too much by levelling alt jobs, try to stick to the MSQ as your main goal.
18:34 Dark Helmet is a Mark. They are level cap enemies that spawn across the world map, and give you a small extra reward for killing them. They are split between B, A and S ranks. Tl;dr: B ranks respawn somewhere else in the map 5 seconds after being killed, A ranks respawn after a few hours, S rank requires specific conditions to spawn, AND will be available to unlock a few hours after being killed as well. In ARR, every map have one mark of each rank. From HW onwards, each map have two B ranks, two A ranks, and a single S rank.
I have a friend who got so into the gathering and crafting in this game, he actually got those classes to lvl 80 (current max lvl) before his main combat job. It can get addicting to say the least. Also if you want another tank job you will have to wait till you get to travel to other cities (believe it’s around lvl 15 MSQ) and in the city of Ul’dah where you can pick up Gladiator.
It brings me so much joy to see you try out the armorer class. It's the first crafting job I learned and it's really fun to try and craft all the different items. To ease your thoughts the gear you craft tends to be the same gear you would buy appropriate to your level so as long as they are close to your Marauders level they're good for them. If you put in the extra work you can make them high quality which has higher stats than the normal equipment. That being said gear found in dungeons of similar level tend to be higher stats than anything you can Craft.
55:55 Oh boy, if you'd like to see an NPC who doesn't treat you like the gods gift to them, make sure to pick up leatherworking later. Geva gives no fucks.
While you are in Limsa if you are interested in casting classes Arcanist can be interesting as at Lv 30 it branches of into both a DPS and Healer. And as you further level it will also level the other job since they share the same base class
I loved this episode, there were really funny moments, like the chocobo VS crab, and your armorer adventuring!!!
I'm quite enjoying these, keep up the good work
Levequest chest can only be opened while doing the quest. Open them before completing the leve
Nope. "Sprint" will always have a cooldown- you will always need to stop n walk around t'catch up breath. BUT, this is in fact a vital combat skill on itself, thus why it is not likely to be always active. You want to move fast ( in the world map and some very few cities), you get on yer mount. At times you WILL need to get the f*ck out of harms way (or catch up with yer tank or stray DPS if you are healing, christ) by any available means possible, and you will be hitting that in actual battles.
I know MMOs are an exception but I would love to you to try Guid Wars 2. Yes, is a sequel to Guld Wars but you can enjoy it without knowng anything of the previous game.
