Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail[a] is the fifth expansion pack to Final Fantasy XIV, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Square Enix for Windows, macOS, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. It was released on July 2, 2024, over two years after Endwalker, the previous expansion.[2] Like its predecessors, Naoki Yoshida served as director and producer and Masayoshi Soken composed the soundtrack. The expansion pack will be released as a standalone product for current players; for new players, the “Complete Edition” that originally launched with Heavensward was updated to include all expansions including Dawntrail.

In Dawntrail, players travel to Tural, a continent across the sea, to participate in a rite of succession to determine the next leader of Tuliyollal. They will serve as champion for Wuk Lamat, one of the current leader’s children. They are joined by allies from Eorzea who support different candidates. After the climactic events of Endwalker, Dawntrail was designed as a “summer vacation” for the player’s character, the Warrior of Light. In addition to adding new areas, the expansion pack increased the level cap, debuted two character classes and a new playable race, and initiated the game’s first major graphical overhaul since its relaunch in 2013.

At launch, Dawntrail received generally positive reviews, though it was notably not as well received as its widely acclaimed previous expansions, Shadowbringers and Endwalker.

  1. The endless do not have souls, they are just memory given form. To sustain the endless they use living aether from people to keep them running like a computer program. Souls are use by civilians as a extra life.

  2. Dawntrail was the roughest expansion for me by a country mile because it was just like I really liked Gulool Ja Ja… and then he died.

Then the second half came by and I was ehhhh about it (much preferred the first, this is when Wuk was starting to overstay a tad for me), but then Otis came along and I was really digging his company. Thought even if this was going another Dragon Ball Z style "constant escalation" plot, at least we got a REALLY cool friend to add to our team.

    AND THEN HE DIED TOO.

  3. Man, it kinda hurts to see.

I don't mind many cutscenes. I mind many cutscenes showing things that should have been playable. As well as characters being stupid for no reason other than to make plot happen.

  4. 1:14 I think this was the worst part of Dawntrail. The kidnapping happens offscreen and you're just sitting around waiting for Wuk Lamat to come back. Erenville even says she might have gotten lost on the straight path back. Then you do some investigation footwork to find out what happened, complete with two horrible stealth quests, and only then do you figure out she was kidnapped by Bakool Ja Ja.

When my WoL found her, my headcanon was that the WoL was rolling her eyes and wondering how she got dragged into babysitting her and wishing that she was with Koana instead. For the Hanuhanu feat, Koana didn't make us do 6 quests for a fancy float, he just poured some magic potion and the problem with the reeds was instantly fixed. Terrible writing all around.

  5. High on the smell of their own farts, the gods of the realm thought they could do no wrong. They started removing voice acted segments and reducing the story complexity to something comparable to a game from the early 1990s. With no apology in sight, they steamed ahead, greedily enhancing the power of their cash shops and appealing to World of Warcraft players by ensuring only the combat was good and almost everyone hated the story. Stripped of their once loved home, hundreds of thousands fled the desolation of the land that can't even get a decent taco-eating emote. All that remained were events for fake holidays, attempting to ply who few remained with lackluster housing items for houses that were already full in the limited 300 item placement system.

  6. Weird random trivia: the brains of conjoined twins are not able to take over the duties of each others subconscious nervous system
hence whenever one of the heads (or rather brains) die the other dies soon after due to the bodily functions stopping which the dead head controlled. Meaning Daddy JaJa would‘ve long been dead, dying with his other head.

  7. I realize that having such an opinion is probably borderline insanity, but I personally haven't had a bad time in any expansion regardless of the story or the writing. Being in Tural and seeing what it had to offer and beyond was honestly a treat to experience. Dawntrail is of course by no means perfect, and it has some very stiff competition to try and match up to, but we can look forward to the future at least (Arcadion/FF11 raids are pretty cool)
