The 4th wall got broken, and I think we got the first PERFECT moment in gaming.

It was perfect. Sorry. #Notsorry.
Holy crap that was good
Ah, Venat. . . While we knew you as Hydaelyn for years; and only as Venat briefly, you will be missed.
Such a fantastic character; and even if she didn't make all the right decisions, the ones she did make ultimately allowed the world to continue on. All the while knowing it could be a future; with or without her, or her friends and loved ones in it. I think that is one of the greatest differences that Hades even admitted to. The past he loved and fought for; and lost because of, was not the one we would win.
I look forward to many more new adventures.
It hit the first time pretty hard, but every subsequent time it was asked, be it Venat, Hydaelyn, or Zenoes, it got stuck in my head more and more. But what really hit was that it was never answered in a straightforward way. It is a questions which can only be answered by the player with their own personal interpretation and experience.
Peebs, this was most definitely intentional by the devs. Endwalker breaks the 4th wall multiple times. Endwalker wasn't just the end of a huge story arc. It was a thank you and love letter from the devs to us, the Final Fantasy XIV community.
I do have one request, if at all possible and you're willing to do it. I would like to see your reaction to answering Zenos with the "That, I can't deny" option. I would like to see your character say that and your reaction to it. It's just a request, nothing more. Thanks.
I think it’s a meaningful question with many answers. She asks us once in the past and once more in our final meeting, it means something personal. I think she asks us for many reasons. She wants to know our conviction, our strength of will, our reason to live, and maybe out of genuine curiosity. Personally, I think it’s one of the best journeys you can experience in a narrative game. It’s never going to be the same between two players and it’s going to be yours and yours alone.
I sadly forgot the question as soon as it was asked, couldn't recall it at all when she said she wanted an answer later. I might have been to emotionally wrapped up with Meteion and Hermes, guarding myself against depression as it haven't been that long since I finally got out of my own dark place. I think if I played through the story again, now knowing where the darkness lies I might be able to pick up on the hope they trying to lead us to but at that moment all I could focus on was the Mother's love that Venat where sending out and try not to fall to pieces.
It was an unexpected master stroke at the peak of an emotional rollercoaster I am still staggered by! Thank you for sharing your journey ❤️
The hardest thing for me is yoshi p confirming that after you fight hyadelyn to prove your ready, she used the power of her soul to fight you, and when you won it was spent. She wont return to the planet, she gave literally everything she had for the sake of the star and its people.
Another moment that breaks the 4th wall for me and I'm confident it was not intentional… Emet-Selch unmasking in his return cutscene and then saying "Satisfied??" which all of his fans laughed/cheered at.
That was fantastic. When I got to that part, I was stunned… I remembered my personal journey through life, some tears may have flown (but I still thought about my journey in the game as well. haha). Of course, we never was able to answer in-game, but deep down, I knew what to say. Personally, I think it was a question intended for us, the players, and I love that the FF14 team did that.
How many moments like that have you experienced in you gaming life. Love hearing you take on thing and how you see them as a new person to ff. Keep up the thought provoking rambling.
I think that was the second time I felt a 4th wall come down. The first was the scene with Zenos in stormblood
Peebs, I think you just experienced an even bigger, and very possible intentional, 4th wall break!
I remember some coment in some video describing Venat as Hitler becouse of the sundering, how awfull and cruel she was, how she never saught other alternatives and instead just forced everyone to live by her belifes.
And all i could think of was that conversation, her reaction to my WoL telling her one of his adventures (in my mind he told her about Hildibrand xD) and her question "Was it worthwhile?". I don't know if that coment was a troll, but i could see how someone could reach that conclusion and yet i dissagree with it completely. It also struck to me how it was the little things that made Venat my favorite character in FFXIV. Despite her faults Venat was a woman that loved life.
Wile I didn't quite think of life, the universe and everything – that question still rocked me….. Just thinking about "Hey – you've been playing this game now for 10 years – has it been worth it? Have you enjoyed the journey?" For me, this REALLY hit that moment of a writer or creator asking "have you enjoyed playing in our playground?" I will state that the entire STORY has made me contemplate life a bit more, but a GOOD movie, book, game will do that. It'll make you stop and look at your own life in a different perspective or see something that you had a blind spot for – sometimes for YEARS. Very well broken down and nicely analyzed.
Venat is a unexpected treasure, and one too brief. Recalling those moments with each moment I understood that it was all to help us understand the true threat, wasn’t by ascians but a creature in despair made by them. As well as a mystery too. Which is far more fascinating if you caught it
This isn't 4th wall breaking though. The question isn't being asked directly to the player, she doesn't turn away from the char look at us and ask, it is being asked to the player character. While sure it can have some deep meaning FOR the player it was not intended to be asked outside of the person standing right in front of her.
Great video! That scene IS perfect indeed. Period.
I also agree that this question can be seen in both ways. From a player perspective, and also a character perspective. Also, Zenos poses a similar question to us, in the very end. "Did you find fulfillment?"
