An Indigenous Perspective: FFXIV: Dawntrail Review & Theories (Tea Time with Meerah)

Dawntrail is my favorite expansion!! This video covers my review and some theories I have about Dawntrail from my personal perspective as an indigenous person and as a native historian. I personally loved it so much and thought that the indigenous representation was creative and respective. The writers did such a great job representing the myriad of different indigenous tribes and their cultures, and the values we hold dear.

I recorded this video back in like….July lmao. Real life has been wild for me lately, but I finally got around to editing it! Just in time for 7.1 to come out I guess ;-; hahahaha

  1. An amazing review and a really interesting chat about Dawntrail expansion, as well as the personal background you shared—it’s always great to hear about that since your passion really comes through, and it’s so satisfying to listen and learn from you, even though I’m not a Final Fantasy player. Honestly, everything you talked about sounds so interesting. If you ever get the chance, I’d love to hear more about your favorite hobby, rebinding books. I stayed until the very end out of curiosity about your thoughts and theories—I’m immune to spoilers if I don’t know the full, full context! But thanks for the warning!

  2. Loved your thoughts, and appreciate the insight on the zones and quests from your perspective, especially the pronunciations that I never dared to try lol. I know many have conflicting feelings over the story, but I'm glad that it seems Square did their due diligence and respected the sources of their inspiration.

  3. I'd assumed we were going to meracydia next expansion but you're right, since we haven't seen any blue mage stuff yet we probably aren't done with Tural. We also have the field zone which will be in Shades' Triangle so probably pirate themed. Alexandria is from the ninth reflection, and since Living Memory is there it's probably not completely devoid of aether. Hopefully we will get more on that in the next expansion too.
Thanks for the video, it was a good watch

  4. Damn this is cool! It's nice to see an in-depth look at how the adaptation handled its inspiration. Actually learned some cool stuff, and I'll be honest, probably gonna come back here for some cliff notes when I start world building one of my own settings.

  5. Thank you for this perspective on Dawntrail. As someone who isn't an Indigenous person but has a fascination with learning about Indigenous culture and history I found so much to love with the people of Tural. I especially loved seeing the Hhetsarro and their connection with the Rroneek and drawing parallels to the various Indigenous peoples of the Great Plains and their connection to the wildlife there such as the buffalo. Some parts have been adapted for a fantasy setting, but the writers and world designers all clearly did their homework.

I too hope we can see more East US representation in the patches and/or future expacs; one of the first cultures I researched (and what sparked my interest) was the Haudenosaunee (government name Iroquois), since their former territory was around where I grew up as a kid.

  6. It has been confirmed that Alexandria came from the 9th reflection.
I already made that connection from the very beginning, cause it seemed to be a theme with all the reflections that we've visited so far, that these are all tied to their respective Final Fantasy game.

  7. See, as an American (who is also Indigenous, Blackfoot and Cherokee here,) who has lived in the Southwest all my life, Shaaloani gave me New Mexico vibes, even if the Miqo area was closer to the Central US areas. Some of the smaller towns use adobe housing, which was prevalent with the Anasazi and Southwestern US Indigenous, and Northern arid region Mexican Indigenous tribes. As well, the architecture they pulled from for the non-ceruleum towns in Shaaloani are almost 1 for 1 duplicates of the mining towns here in the West proper, which hilariously, are the places most Westerns in American cinema were filmed.

Now on to my biggest of gripes… I hated the Miqo story arc of the Post MSQ so far. It felt almost like an inside job Dances with Wolves, but rushed. Kona being hyper into the culture and methodologies, when he was so extensively against them, was just a jarring whiplash, that made me roll my eyes after the relatively delicate and nuanced way they represented the cultures they pulled from during the MSQ proper.

I also have a bit of trepidation on them going into the east of Xak Tural, even if it would be nice to see other groups besides the Walaqi. In truth, I would much rather they head into the deep north of it, and meet their equivalent of the First Nations, or Inuit/Yuit. The Eastern tribes and Southeastern tribes of the US have some very interesting choices (the Mississippian Culture for one, or Roanoke,) but after the Post MSQ story… it feels like it will end up having a Pocahontas or Sacagawea problem, where it is more romanticized or folk lore versions of the tribes, instead of taking the tribes more seriously.

  8. Charming video. Shame the only part of Dawntrail I disliked was well your fav zone. The wild west bore this Canadian to tears until we got to the train. But I also super adored the weaver/leatherworker/carpenter quest because the lose of history is what breaks my heart and well Canada and its First Nations yeah that history must not be forgot.
    Cute vtuber model.
I bet it was a world Emet and team was prepping to rejoin but we kinda offed them before they got to far so things went nuts without them.
Side note I balled my eyes out when Wuk Lamat lost her papa. She may not be in my top 10 cast of 14 but she is why this took third place in expansion behind Endwalker and the king Heavensward.
