FFXIV Game Director Talks Going Free To Play

Eurogamer recently sat down with the game director of Final Fantasy 14, Yoshi P, and discussed the state of Final Fantasy 14 and well as the direction the game is going in. One of the things discussed was the idea of the game going free to play, in this video, I talk about what Yoshi P responded.

  1. I agree with everything you said in your vid! FFXIV will NEVER go FTP! Yoshi P & Square both know the game would die if it went FTP! FFXIV to me is the number one MMORPG in the world! Great vid, keep up the good work!

  2. Just think of all the F2P games you've tried in the past. They are either trash games or they are inundated with tons of microtransactions. I pay $13 a month for my basic sub + 1 extra retainer and its not that difficult to pay for. Plus we've gotten so much over the past decade for our money, there should be no complaint! I hope it never goes F2P, and, they are right, the trial is EXTREMELY generous. People are now able to play through content I paid good money for, and I have no problem with that.

  3. I think for the goals that MMOs have free to play can be kind of bad. There are plenty of games where it's good though. For example competitive games have more positives going free to play than negatives and it works out because most of them sell cosmetics to make up the difference.

  4. I will not even try the game until it's BUY to PLAY with ZERO SUBSCRIPTIONS and every expansion is two or more years old is free. Similar to Guild Wars 2 model. No point in playing for free if I can't reach the level cap.

  5. From a point of view: F2P mobile games are making 1.2 to 2.5 billion USD/month and competing in 2 or 3 years with those numbers is going to be tough. I don't see a change in the near future, PCs tend to cost more than 4.5k USD, consoles without games min 500 USD and a mobile device 80 USD or less. Shout your anger from the highest mountain, then look around and see that all the mountains are made of mobile devices.
