  1. As Dan says, that tank is the final boss of the hard version of the Brayflox Longstop dungeon.

The story of that version of the dungeon is that the Illuminati are attacking to steal the cheese formula.

Meaning this would be the second time we find ourselves in a cheese war.

  2. Matoya my- no I shouldn't say it, she'd scold me. Durmin meets one of the greatest minds of Sharlayan, and the developers decided to make her a sassy old grandma. What a fun decision. No primal lores here, just additional comments.

Now that Durmin has completed all the MSQ leveling dungeons for Heavensward, here's my opinion of these ones, as well as the level 51 dungeon:

-The Dusk Vigil as a strange one, where you battle the wildlife, but end up fighting the remains of a bunch of knights that froze to death (and also cannibalized themselves) in the middle of the dungeon. The griffin and Yuhelmeric should have been swapped. A bit of a strange one, but this should've been a mandatory unlock, like a certain other dungeon in Stormblood isn't either. They do get better at this, as they include all leveling dungeons – from x1 to x9 – in Shadowbringers and Endwalker.
-Sohm Al is solid, especially when the party gets the hang of the mechanics. Very consistent romp.
-The Aery is the best dungeon, culminating in the fight with Nidhogg. Its music and color palette are pretty nice.
-The Vault is PRETTY and runs into much of the same pros as The Aery. Can't be said about the music though, as I like the Aery's more. However, it's also a gear check and i've heard it was much more brutal at launch.
-The Great Gubal Library is tough and the odd one out. I've seen wipes and deaths during the Demon Tome and the Bibliotaph, but oddly enough not at Byblos. The last boss also SUCKS as a Melee DPS if the party isn't careful with orb placement, as getting near the orbs will cause Vulnerability stacks and most Melee DPS rely on positioning themselves. Its theme is my favorite of the leveling dungeons too.

Another fun fact, 1.0 had much bigger plans for the City-State you can start out in: Alongside Ul'dah, Gridania, and Limsa Lominsa, they had three other starting zones in the works – Ishgard, Sharlayan, and Ala Mhigo. Naturally, they had to scrap the idea as it'd be more trouble than it's worth and they were a bit pressed for time.

While Ishgard is our main hub for Heavensward and Sharlayan (in Idyllshire form) is visited here, Ala Mhigo is currently under imperial rule.

  3. I was today years old when I realized that the questions about the game tic-tac-toe being also called KNOTS and crosses—why knots? What does a circle have to do with a knot? Is it just knots are vaguely round? Etc.—were missing an important detail:

    It’s NOUGHTs and crosses.

The things you learn by reading dialogue….

  4. Poroggos, like Crawlers, are a Final Fantasy XI design. They're rather rare in the modern-day Vana'diel. Why? Well, many of the Tarutaru, the race the Lalafell are based on (and, if you've seen Shantotto in other FF media such as Dissidia, the race she is of), live in the region of Sarutabaruta, in the city of Windurst. The Tarutaru are much like the Lalafell – adorably childlike in appearance, a joy to have as friends, and an absolute terror to make enemies of. The Poroggo, originally created from ordinary toads via a forbidden spell, wished to live in peace with the people of Windurst, but the latter saw the former as a potential threat. Their solution? Genocide. Some few Poroggo seem to have escaped the culling, for as rare as sightings are, they still seem to exist in the modern age, but most were slaughtered. Take care to never underestimate Tarutaru or Lalafell for being cute – they are as capable of putting you and your friends and family six feet under as folks of the larger races.

  5. 42:50 the Western continent is not the isle of Vylbrand (home to La Noscea and Limsa), though that IS to the west of Aldenard (the mainland continent that comprises the majority of Eorzea). Vylbrand was settled long before Merlwyb was born, by Roegadyn fleeing their homeland of Aerslaent (located somewhere in the seas north of Eorzea, I'm not entirely sure where other than "somewhere other than Old Sharlayan") after their rulers turned tyrannical.

It is unknown what name the locals of the Western Continent would use for their home continent, but the people of the Three Great Continents (Aldenard, Ilsabard, Othard) refer to it as The New World. The explorer who is credited with re-discovering it (For the Allagans and others of their time knew of its existence, but knowledge of it was lost and just a century ago it's existence was debatable to the people of the Three Great Continents) was a Lominsan sailor named Ketenramm the Blue, who dubbed the continent Ketenland, a name that completely failed to stick. Merlwyb and her crew were the first formal Eorzean expedition to travel there once it's existence had been confirmed, I believe.

As of the current expansion, we can't go there yet, but it's the place the Mamaal Ja come from, as well as the art of Blue Magic. And then, as the book says, there's the El Dorado-esque legend of a city of gold. If the Three Great Continents are the equivalent of Fantasy Eurasia and Africa, then The New World is Fantasy America (as in the continents of North and South America, not Fantasy United States of America). I forget if the continent in question has been mentioned yet, but Fantasy Australia is also a thing, and if it hasn't come up yet it will come up before the 3.0 storyline is done.

  6. I was like "who the hell is Matoya?" even through the scene I was trying o remember since I tend to be bad with names and I haven't played FFI in over a decade…

Until I saw the little enchanted broom in the background, it brought me a smile.

  7. Just had a thought, related to the El Dorado reference at 42:40. I could link that with the old cartography practice of "trap streets" (culdesacs in a depicted city which didn't exist, but if they showed up on a competitor's maps were a red flag for "this person is copying off you and isn't supposed to be") by having different versions of the "city of gold" myth disseminated to specific publishers as a point of worldbuilding. Although determining for what purpose, and how effective that would be, requires further thought.

  8. How dare you apologize for "Job's Done!" 😛 You made me reflexively repeat it, it was great.
Y'Shtola's "hands on hips" is cute, though the banter with her master is also very fun.

EDIT: DTC, you goofs, i see those reading emotes. Well played.

  9. So a few things that are interesting about the library.

Firstly, a lot of those enemies seem demonic eh? Summoning demons is frowned upon in basically all of Hydalen in the current age, for just how dangerous it is, aside from three groups. The Asians who we've established as pretty bad dudes who don't seem too bothered by the void wreaking havoc, Garleans who we know deal with Alagan tech so it's no surprise that they'll also do some deals with the void, and finally Sharlayans who use voidsent to guard their books, and I cannot overstate this SHOULD KNOW BETTER!

Secondly the book Dan read about the admiral is not talking about the founding of limsalominsa, but rather her discovering "the new world" Mericidia, the land Bahamut lived before being killed by the Alagans. The Moomal Ja are found right now in two places in Eorzea, La Noscea, because the admiral established trade, and thus some would have come over, and the crystal tower, because when it froze itself in time Mericidia was activly fighting the Alagans. We'll actually get a bit more into all this later in post hevansward.

Third the leather bound Diary mentioning the Hawke manor boss is part of something of a sub plot running through 14 about a mad gridanian gold smith trying to summon voidsent into this world. There are other journals, and quotes from minion descriptions. We can forgive him for not knowing better, because he's just an artist dreaming of things beyond mortal ken, and the voidsent are clearly messing with him, unlike the entire nation of sharlayan whos founders SAW FIRST HAND WHAT MACH DID WITH THE VOID, AND THE HORROR THAT RESULTED.

  10. Thanks to this series, I finally picked up the free trial at the beginning of the month and have sunk way too many hours into this amazing game. When you talked about pickup groups, I was reminded of how, on more than on occasions, I saw the tank die because they decided it'd be a great idea to aggro, like, 50 enemies. We only managed to avoid a wipe thanks to a fast-acting healer and the fact that Ninja, my Job, is somewhat decent at tanking for a very brief period of time.

I really need to buy the game when I have the money and don't have Xenoblade 3 to play so that way I can join the DTC and actually use features that have been painful to be without.

  11. Golems having a special backdoor code to instantly kill them is actually something found in the original Jewish folklore about them! A priest would bring the being to life by etching the Hebrew word for "truth" on it, and when he needed it destroyed, would add a single extra stroke to change it to "death."

  12. It's true you can't see the evolution of Mor Dhona or Idyllshire anymore but you CAN see certain areas evolve by doing Beast Tribe Quests. Most if not all the Beast Tribes from the Ixali (added after launch but before HW) onwards the quests have included visual changes that range from extra NPC's to large scenery changes(mostly crafter or gatherers). The stories are also a lot of fun.

  13. When the Gobwatch said, "One moment for clearing away barricade," I immediately thought to myself, "It would be hilarious if they did it with bombs. Too bad that wouldn't make any sense…"
    How short-sighted of me.

  14. That tank has the same model as the Longstop (Hard) tank, but a different color, and the attacks are slightly different. For one, the bombs are much, MUCH worse than these. It also has the annoying habit of turning invincible and running circles on the edge of the arena just to waste our time 😒

Some of those hardmode dungeons are really, really cool! Hard Tam-tara Deepcroft is spooky! And I feel as though I haven't seen the last of it's final boss…

  15. Hasn't been that long since I've ran the Great Gubal Library for the first time. It's one of my favorite dungeons so far, and there's some competition! The music though… and the bosses are all interesting fights. I'll have cause to revisit it soon, since SE will be adding Duty Support to it (I think sometime this year!)

  16. I watched this episode while playing this part of the story myself and it was hilarious seeing the small adjustments they made for duty support mode. Since the characters get to be your support characters, they have to go with you, so when all three of you get back, ystola can make a little jab about how they could've just as easily been kept back to do chores.

  17. And here is the source of my hc that Alphi and Ali are identical twins and Alphi is trans… if they were identical, Matoya would think they were both Louisoix's granddaughters, if she didn't know anything about them after they left Dravania.
