World of Warcraft using FOMO against FFXIV Endwalker

It looks like World of Warcraft is using FOMO again to hook in players. Patch 9.1.5 is being released on November 2nd… but the meat of the patch won’t be released until December for a limited time period… around the time Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker raids are being released. Coincidence?

Description:
Final Fantasy XIV[b] is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Square Enix. Directed and produced by Naoki Yoshida, it was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 3 in August 2013, as a replacement for the failed 2010 version of the game, with support for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and macOS releasing later. Final Fantasy XIV takes place in the fictional land of Eorzea, five years after the events of the original 2010 release. At the conclusion of the original game, the primal dragon Bahamut escapes from its lunar prison to initiate the Seventh Umbral Calamity, an apocalyptic event which destroys much of Eorzea. Through the gods’ blessing, the player character escapes the devastation by time traveling five years into the future. As Eorzea recovers and rebuilds, the player must deal with the impending threat of invasion by the Garlean Empire from the north.

  1. I think it's bad enough when Blizzard tries to release content around the same time as its competitors… but than to make it so you only have two weeks to do the content… that's the cherry on top eh.

  2. The "new" content is just old content available for one week 2x a year (Timewalking is one week, once a month, one expansion at a time in rotation)

I played during WoD, BFA and early Shadowlands, i am a huge WoW fan. BUT its no competition, i am committed to FFXIV now and i think this would backfire.

9.1.5 is a systems patch NOT a content patch

If they really wanted to use FOMO, then 9.2 would have potentially worked better

  3. HAHA !!!!! Blizzard is desperetly trying to drive players on theire game. I sure had a good time in WoW During Legion, but this time is GONE for me. I'd better have a blast on FF 14 at Endwalker rather grinding all my life again on WoW. The game bored me. time to change big things for them, otherwise, my money goes to Square Enix

  4. This sort of toxic trash from Blizzard is why I will NEVER return. That sort of stuff breeds the garbage attitude that has become so pervasive in WoW's player base. If someone doesn't want to play 24/7 during Blizzard's limited events, they are labeled a "filthy casual". Games are supposed to be fun, not stressful. Oddly enough, I play FFXIV 10x as much because Square doesn't push that FOMO crap, therefore, I don't feel pressured to play. Without the pressure, playing feels more fun and freeing, and I play way more.

  5. Dear Activision/Blizzard… NO. Fuck off.

Sincerely, A Guy Who Sat In Your Pocket For Well Over A Decade

PS. Thanks for banning me mid honor grind at rank 13 for getting up to use the bathroom mid AV with zero recourse. You shit on my time and won't be getting anymore of it.

PSS. Any small devs have any cool projects coming up and want my money?

  6. I don’t see why so many content creators are making this a big deal? It’s not like this will be the only time to ever play the content and it would be gone forever.

If you want to focus on endwalker then just wait til mage tower comes back the next time walking cycle what’s the big deal?

  7. As long as Blizzard thinks it is ok to censor there game I will not be coming back. I dont care what content they temporally add and then take away. All this censorship that they have been doing to the game because a few employees are out of control. Is not going to get me to come back any time soon.

  8. Just don't forget the reason why you play games. As long as you're having fun and enjoying it and don't feel stressed, more power to you. If you're doing just because of FOMO, I'd just take a deep breath and ask yourself, "is it really worth it?" and "is this something I enjoy and want to keep supporting and spending money on?" Because remember: fool me once, shame on you… fool me twice, shame on me.

  9. It's just another desperate attempt for Blizzard to re-invoke interest. Competition is understandable, but this is just sad. My advice for those who play both FFXIV and WoW: forget WoW. This measly patch can't give you what Endwalker will give.

It's a real shame i enjoyed my time on wow and met and played with some great people to see it in the state it is in now makes me alittle sad and i do hope they can turn it around, im not holding my breath though

  11. For the WoW players, there's a reaaaaal simple solution. Just forget this nonsense patch on the retail servers and wait for the content to hit private servers.
    Problem solved.

  12. Blizzard can FOMO the hell out of everything if it makes them feel better, they can plan their releases around the competition in an attempt to hamstring them, but the last time I recall any of those tricks working was May 2016, when they released Overwatch. That DID manage to hamper the release, and ultimately contribute to the downfall, of Battleborn. But that was, again, 5 1/2 years ago. What worked then has a much lower chance of working now, especially given how much more goodwill Blizzard had with the fanbase all those years ago. Honestly, Blizzard is about to become the gaming industry's prime example of 'Fuck around and find out' with how much they keep disrespecting their players and attempting to slight their competition, and it's sad.

  13. Well that release date backfired for blizzard now that Endwalker delayed to December 7th.
It won't matter though; I think any WoW player who's switched to XIV (or any other game) has gained enough distance & perception by now to recognise it's just the abusive boyfriend promising he'll do better only to hit you again later.

Blizzard – we need to do something i know lets release legion time walking during endwalker, but not on release you know like when there end game starts.
Yoshi P – Hmm we release when your time walking release since you wanna play "Poker Face"
    Blizzard – ……….. .. . ….

  15. I haven't been actively playing retail wow ever since Mists of Pandaria (I get the expac each time and play for about 2 weeks till I see that they have once again fucked the game up and then just stop), instead I played on private servers up until the launch of Classic WoW which I now call my home (TBC Classic specifically), but even that I am not entirely happy about, due to many piss-poor decisions on blizzards side, only logging on to play with actual friends to mess about in battlegrounds or raid-logging. So that would be a NO, I will not come back to retail WoW to see how they failed to change the core idea of the game again, not until the next expansion, of course.

  16. This will be more interesting because Endwalker was delayed two weeks. So if you preordered the game you get early access at December 3rd just when the time walking starts. Now timewalking isn't competing with raids it's competing with the expansion launch.

I doubt this is Yoshi-P trying to call Blizzard's bluff but damn did the choice just get easier.

  17. I see final fantasy has delayed release so they can create fomo around missing legion timewalking …

Honestly with the amount of mmos coming out if they did release it near another mmo they'd have to wait till mid Dec which is so late

  18. Blizzard is a horrible company I hate the chads who defend with passion it’s sickening. I hate the player base say oh you suck you don’t deserve wow. I’m happy their damn players base toxicity helps me to stay off the game even more

  19. You say a rock and a hard place but that's completely wrong. People can play the fomo period and then once the shine wears off all of endwalker content will still be new, relevant and permanent. FF14 doesn't make the choice for you. It allows you to choose. Not only that people will be looking to the 6.1+ patches for further story.
