Final Fantasy XIV is a very well constructed MMORPG, with a beginning levelling experience that surpasses any other MMO on the market. That doesn’t mean that I don’t have any complaints however…

Final Fantasy XIV is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Square Enix. Directed and produced by Naoki Yoshida, it was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 3 in August 2013, as a replacement for the failed 2010 version of the game, with support for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and macOS releasing later. Final Fantasy XIV takes place in the fictional land of Eorzea, five years after the events of the original 2010 release. At the conclusion of the original game, the primal dragon Bahamut escapes from its lunar prison to initiate the Seventh Umbral Calamity, an apocalyptic event which destroys much of Eorzea. Through the gods’ blessing, the player character escapes the devastation by time traveling five years into the future. As Eorzea recovers and rebuilds, the player must deal with the impending threat of invasion by the Garlean Empire from the north.

More about Final Fantasy XIV:
“Final Fantasy XIV is an MMORPG and features a persistent world in which players can interact with each other and the environment. Players create and customize their characters for use in the game, including name, race, gender, facial features, and starting class. Unlike in the original release, players may only choose to be a Disciple of War or Magic as a starting class—Disciples of the Hand and Land are initially unavailable. Players must also select a game server for characters to exist on. While servers are not explicitly delineated by language, data centers have been placed in the supported regions (i.e., North America, Europe, Japan) to improve the communication latency between the server and the client computer and players are recommended to choose a server in their region. Regardless of server or language, the game features a large library of automatically translated game terms and general phrases which allow players who speak different languages to communicate.”

What do you guys think about my 5 thoughts?
i dont find the voice acting in english to be nearly as bad as everyone says. It is not nearly as bad as plenty of crappy voice acting. Also, as someone who did ARR at launch and decided to do it again on a new character, the vesper bay tickets are not easy to miss at all. They are literally a quest reward and you should always look at your rewards or you only have yourself to blame for doing the run so many times. Blaming it on the inventory isn't too far since as soon as you get that reward you should look for it and start to use it.
Honestly the post ARR stuff is the WORST part of ARR, the whiplash feeling you mentioned is definitely one, another is that post ARR is the LONGEST post before the next expac in the entire game by FAR and at least half of it is more irrelevant nonsense. Then you get to Dragonsong and you have that moment of, oh awesome I'm at the next expansion now, right? Only to realize no, you're still not and still have a long way to go. Really it should swing you right into Dragonsong… So because of all that the moment you're finally actually in HW some of the initial excitement is removed cause you're sort of like, "so you're telling me I wasn't at the expansion still…?"
And even then (unless it's changed with the ARR update) there's never like a clear cut of welcome to heavensward or anything, you're just still kinda in this surreal, did I make it?
Also it's worth noting that while yes, the teleport tickets do exist to the waking sands they are 1: NEW, they are very new so it's not something commonly talked about, so if you missed that those were given to you, I don't blame you. and 2: they are LIMITED you only get to many, enough to get you through the story from what I understand, but if you ever use them for anything else ,like say going to the glamour side quest you didn't know about and went to pick up later after paying google a visit, you're gonna run out before the story is done. and 3: yes they do explain in the story why the aetheryte can't be closer blahblahblah that's all well and good. But you know what else they have in the story? FUCKING CELLPHONES, but Minfilia's lazy ass can't even be bothered to just hit up your linkpearl, she's gotta make you run all the way to her house.
As far as the voice acting goes, I believe it was a budgetary issue in trying to turn the game around from 1.0. I'm really glad they changed out the actors for HW and onwards. The voice acting in Shadowbringers especially is something truly special. It's fantastic.
I think that there's a lot of old stuff that could be changed our tuned up. And yes post-expansion patches can feel like a slog for newcomers. But not only are they important for the story, if they didn't exist, or if all of their content was put into the expansions themselves, that would mean that there would be no new content for 2-3 years, if not longer, between expansions. And that's an easy recipe to burnout most of your player base, and for them to forget most of the story leading into the new expansion.
I don’t agree with his last point. Back then that was the end… of 2.0. We didn’t have more story after just side content, till we got 2.1 etc. he is playing catch up and complaining about it not ending. If 2.0 was a whole expac what on earth would we have done for the few years ARR was all we had lol
waking sands just take the ferry from Limsa near the arcanist guild.. boom. no running
Those 100 quests I just did. Its a hell of a slog. Glad it got back to normal after. Loving ff14 so far
Read the title as "Pray return to the Waking Sands", we all know that pain lol.
Luckily most of these issues aren't present later on, like the voice acting.
About the loading screens:
This is because they had to release it for the ps3.
The ps3 wasn't capable of bigger places while maintaining the graphical level. That's not a lore or "final fantasy"-thing
should had talked about the real isue which is the inventory management in this game…it's insane..
The first one is such a non problem. You get like 15 tickets to teleport directly there. I dont know why everybody is mad about it.
You a lot better now and since you beat ultima weapon you unlock flying in ARR, we who played during 2.0 forward and HW and STB. There were no flying and still didn't complain. Also patch cycle and msq in it is to have content after you done the msq for current expension. Msq cintinues on each major patch. Also maybe don't run to waken sands limsa and taking the boat is far easy to do.
Watch Jesse Cox's video. It's a better explanation than this video. It explains the RPG before MMO notion that FFXIV is by nature.
Honestly I have 4 major targets in my head for what they should cut or trim down in the ARR questline.
1.) Messing around with Buscarron while hunting for the sylph elder.
2.) Investigating the mystery of people getting mutilated before going into Haukke manor. This one shouldn't be entirely removed, but should be shortened. The point here is to show the atrocities Ascians are willing to commit to achieve their goals.
3.) Preparing a feast for the company of heroes before fighting Titan
4.) Finding the wrong corrupted crystal 3 times before finding the correct one to go fight Garuda.
These are all just filler parts and are extremely frustrating to quest through. They should also rewrite the dialog in the praetorium to be more concise, speed up the pace of the camera work or just cut some cutscenes entirely, and do something similar with Castrum Meridianum. These dungeons are not the setpieces they want to be and the developers need to recognize and accept that. These relics of the past should be streamlined. The story doesn't even BEGIN to get good until ARR patch quests and even then, it's only just bearable.
the waking sands run… keep playing.
the zoning, 1.0 didn't have zone loading, transitions was seamless and you didn't even get a blank screen… and you needed a god-box to play the game. Trust me, you don't WANT ff14 to not have zones.
the VA work in ARR was *BAD* change it to japanese, later on it gets better but hoooo boyo yeah it's bad.
storyline is a lot of very slow building.. keep playing, it all makes sense later but right now where you're at in the game, the end of ARR, it's a confusing jumble of loose threads. That's kinda intentional.
you STILL have to get through the patch content which lays the foundation for HW, basically keep playing. It'll make sense later. As with all things FF, it's a slow burn.
There's an item to teleport straight to the waking sands.
Take the ferry from LIMSA to the waking sands. There no walking. It drops you in front of the waking sands door..
It's the end and then came patches until the next expansion. So yes the story for that expansion ends but the devs give u way more content on top of that. I think that's actually a good thing instead of leaving a big drought
imagine not looking in your inventory for TP tickets
ehhh…. WoW not made from small zones? Have u tryed shadowlands…. Its…. zones… and u need to "FLY" = "loading" when you go from one place to another…. so compare it to wow… its the same… 🙂
for the first just take the boat by arcanist guild in limsa.
I 100% agree with the post 35 grind. I'm on my 5th try to play the game and the previous 4 times I always quit sometime between levels 35 and 45. I'm currently in that level range again and taking a break for the Ashes Alpha but I'm going to force myself to get past level 50 this time just to see if I can actually enjoy the game since that's were everyone says the game actually starts
I'm in the part between finishing ARR, and the xpac, and it's reallllly hard to get through compared to the rest of the game. I just want to experience the xpacs where people say the game really picks up
it is illegal to talk about negatives for this game.
Aparently it's community is so toxic, that refuses to acknowledge any "negative" thing.
Honestly, people are praising FFXIV's communities, but together with GW2, they are surprisignly the worst communities in some aspects.
And that's my 1 negative thing about FFXIV, the superiority complex of it's community.
My biggest complaint is the after finishing a duty in duty finder, it doesnt auto uncheck the box. Dont know how many times I have repeated content because I forgot to go back and uncheck it.
This is what I didn’t notice! I’ve been playing this game and just can’t feel that Emerson I do in wow. It’s because of the broke up zones.
i hope when they change the engine they change the zone thing like I hate it so much when I see the blue like it feels so small. hope they redo the all that and the graphics too. yoshi p said they will not now but they will.
As a fellow sprout (I started about nine weeks ago), I personally enjoyed ARR's story quite a bit, save for specific pain points like dealing with that fake Company of Heroes farmboy roedagyn, or proving the WoL's competency to the real Company of Heroes veteran Primal-slayers. I took most of it beyond that stuff in stride and kept saying "I'm not gong to judge a story for taking its time establishing events properly now so it can play with expectations established early on at later points in the plot." Plus I found the really classic RPG crystal collecting quest quaint.
However, one serious thing ARR could use some updates on would be helping the player understand the places being talked about so often a whole lot sooner. I had no idea what a Garlemald was until like level 25 even though it kept coming up, and then we're dealing with refugees in "Little Ala Mhigo" and you hear about the plight of proper Ala Mhigo without ever seeing the place in ARR, they're constantly making reference to Sharlayan stuff, there's some "Students of Baldesion," and I don't know even now if Baldesion is a person, a place, an ideology, all of the above, etc. You're juggling so many terms without getting to see half the places in question, I just felt so lost without any context or mental images to associate any of it with, and then the Scions make it worse in some ways when they're like "so we're Scions but we used to be the Circle of Knowing and a lot of us are Archons but not all of us and we fight the Ascians who are also called Paragons. That's easy to keep straight all at once right?" You need a glossary or a goddamn course on Aeorzean geography to make sense of it as a new player as all the names are being thrown at you.
I also never found out about the Waking Sands teleportation scrolls, however there's a chocobo ride you can take next to the crystal you teleport to :')
1) The MSQ gives you Vesper Sands tickets….and you just didn't use them. Also, do you know you have a mount?
Man, I thought I was a sprout….. lol
As a long time FF14 player . I totally agree with the fractured zones.. I want a fully open world . And Voice acting as well. Fully Voice acted should be a standard these days . And omg the post quests to next expansion is draining.
I also really want them to rework the maps. Male the maps feels more alive , like in BDO. And give them a big next gen upgrade , texture and graphic wise.
I'm so glad I noticed those letters for the waking sands
// Potential Spoilers in my Comment – You've been warned! //
Ok, so here are my takes on your gripes, and I'll add some of my own gripes at the end (as a new player):
1. You're given aetheryte tickets for Vesper Bay, granted, I wish you could actually buy them from a vendor because they become INVALUABLE later on you can avoid that pricey teleport from later expansion areas to Ul'dah or Limsa Lominsa.
2. It's not a gripe, you say, but it's a gripe if you've got it on a list that you're sharing. It's your personal preference that the world is completely open world, but I don't mind the segmented areas of Eorzea. It's like also something iconic from one of their prior games, Final Fantasy XII and XIII, so they were trying to utilize it. Plus it's different and having dungeons and raids that you can go through a path that leads to a different part of the dungeon is so freaking cool!
3. The voice acting is rough, but they were legitimately trying to reform the game from their original 1.0 release and they had a particular studio to work with. It's laid the ground work for the characters and even though most of us won't hear those voices again after ARR, we will remember they are the ones we originally started with. If it bothers you, go back to Japanese VAs. I honestly feel like asking Yoshi P and the team to "fix" the game's beginning would hurt things more than make them better. I'm actually kind of bummed out that I missed the extra stuff that they cut out, even if I was dying to get to Heavensward on my main.
4. I honestly don't know where you got this difficulty from. To me, the initial slow portion was from 1-30, but that's because I didn't have a mount. I've levelled an alt (because of a friend) since then and it's never felt slow to me now.
5. Yes, I know that you're given a long list of quests to do after you've defeated the main baddie of ARR. However, I feel like it was a necessary thing because people were possibly tired of farming Coils of Bahamut or Crystal Tower. Plus, it was much longer before they trimmed it, which was nice of them, but like #3, I don't think it should get trimmed longer. I do understand why they chose to add all the additional content, like Primals on 'Hard' mode. However, I will agree that they could have possibly moved the Special Thanks and credits until after you witness what happened in Ul'dah.
Here's a few issues that I have had for FFXIV:
– Chocobo Porters – I don't like how if you're like in Ul'dah, and you wanna ride a porter to another town, you can't. You're REQUIRED to go back to the capital nearest you, and then take another porter out just to go to that area. So like if I was in Horizon and wanted to take an available chocobo porter to Vesper Bay, which would be nice, I would have to ride back to Ul'dah, turn around, and take another porter back to Vesper Bay, while passing through Horizon! It felt annoying and overlooked and our chocobo buddies deserve a better reputation. I guess that's why they charge us so little gil for the rides, because they're somewhat useless sometimes?
– Duty Finder – when I queue for a dungeon and it pops, the first thing I don't think about when I finish a dungeon is "oh, I should clear my selected dungeon again before I queue again.' There have been so many times where I got a group together, got ready for a trial of a primal, and boom, we're doing Halatali or some lowbie dungeon on accident. It's annoying and I wish the selections you have were untoggled when you go into a queued selection.
– Player housing – I wish I could get a house, but there's limited plots and I don't see myself accruing that much gil by the next expansion, and I'm also gonna refuse to stand at a placard and click on and off of the placard for hours. I know they're fixing some of the issues with Endwalker, but I don't think houses as a commodity will be fully available for EVERYONE. Someone is always going to be missing out on a sizeable chunk of this game that is player housing.
– Gardening – I haven't been able to do it, because there's no other way to do it unless you own a home (1 patch for sm, 2 for med, 3 for large home) or you have a Free Company that has plots, that you're able to access and use. I have heard you CAN plant things in pots if you have an apartment or room in an FC house, but there's no ability to cross pollinate, so what's the point? My guess is they gotta keep the demand for fruits and veggies that change chocobo feather colors HIGH. I've also heard that they might make a change to this with Endwalker because they're gonna have some sort of garden island?- but that's just people guessing because it could totally be it's own thing and not what we actually think it is. Plus it's probably an end-game kind of content and not available for anyone who wants to change their chocobo a different color early on.
Overall, these are my issues, but I still love this game in it's entirety, flaws and all. Thanks for reading, hopefully you didn't get spoiled.
Time to make you hate yourself.
Limsa Lominsa > Arcanist Guild > Take the ferry to the waking sands.
1: You have teleport tickets directly to vesper bay, 2: the maps are split because of the playstation ram limitations, 3: A realm reborn was made in 2 years, 4: A realm reborn was made…in 2 years, 5: each expansions already has its big story beats on release(you dont have to wait 8 months for a conclusion), they dont add it later, what they add later in the patches, its preperation for the next expansion.
You should put that energy into making your own game!
I actually kinda like the moderate map size. Alot of games that have massive maps tend to suffer from feeling empty and slow to traverse.
