Thanks for the video! FFXIV players seemed far more welcoming and friendly to new tanks than my experience with WoW back in Shadow lands, where it was felt very hostile as a new player.
Welcome to AAR base game. It's rough. It does get better as you get thru the expansions. Newer players tell me that the gameplay feels slow. That's due to them not being at the higher levels. But it is a shame that the best parts of the game is gated by what feels like hundreds of hours of gameplay
you'll be engage when it comes to extreme raid as a tank,
FFXIV base game blows absolute ass.
Welcome to FF14! I switched from ESO to FF about 6 months ago and haven’t looked back. The first expansion or two is a massive annoying grind and the combat felt slow compared to ESO. If you can make it through those first few expansions and unlock alliance raids, raids and savage content, it’s almost like a completely different game. The Endwalker MSQ is almost all voiced over with much less text to read and there are much more involved mechanics. Rotations also significantly improve because there are so many other abilities that need to be weaved in your GCDs that the rotations no longer feel slow and boring. Another bright spot is the developers seem to legitimately care about the player base and work to fix any bugs that come up. I don’t think I realized how much we put up with in ESO until I saw how quick they are to apologize and fix content in this game. Long story short, if you make it to current content it’s worth the grind 🙂
So a few quick tips just from looking at your hotbar as you play, quite often you wouldn't perform your AoE combo instead opting to press F repeatedly and I didn't see you pop Fight or Flight, Spirits Within or Circle of Scorn often, these are usually pressed at the start of each pull. Obviously you're brand new to the game but something to keep in mind with FFXIV is that tanks do actually have a very large DPS contribution vs ESO so keeping oGCD abilities on cooldown and completing combo actions is important and gets progressively more important as you progress through the game. Mitigation too, definately try to pop some defensive cooldowns once you're done pulling mobs as you'll make the healers life much easier and getting into the mindset of managing your defensive abilities and building cooldown rotations will really make you grow as a player. Most tank actions are preventative so the most value comes from pressing them when you have HP instead of as a panic button. Of course, this is all at your own pace! The early game doesn't require any of this.
As for the story, yeah, the lack of voiced dialogue compared to ESO is unfortunate and the ARR story in particular is not great. Havensward I really enjoyed but I also haven't played it since its debut many moons ago so I'm not sure how I'd rate it today. Still a loooooooooot better than ARR though and I look back on it fondly. SE has also been doing a lot lately to improve the 1-50 experience but there's only so much you can polish a turd. Certainly cool to see you trying this title out so props to you for that.
