A video looking at Final Fantasy XIV and World of Warcraft possible sub numbers / active players based on available data. Please note that its speculative and estimated guesses based on information that is available. It will always be speculative unless Square or Blizzard decide to come out and say how many subs they have!

DESCRIPTION:

Since launch, World of Warcraft has had eight major expansion packs: The Burning Crusade (2007), Wrath of the Lich King (2008), Cataclysm (2010), Mists of Pandaria (2012), Warlords of Draenor (2014), Legion (2016), Battle for Azeroth (2018), and Shadowlands (2020).

==============================================================
Final Fantasy XIV[b] is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Square Enix. Directed and produced by Naoki Yoshida, it was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 3 in August 2013, as a replacement for the failed 2010 version of the game, with support for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and macOS releasing later. Final Fantasy XIV takes place in the fictional land of Eorzea, five years after the events of the original 2010 release. At the conclusion of the original game, the primal dragon Bahamut escapes from its lunar prison to initiate the Seventh Umbral Calamity, an apocalyptic event which destroys much of Eorzea. Through the gods’ blessing, the player character escapes the devastation by time traveling five years into the future. As Eorzea recovers and rebuilds, the player must deal with the impending threat of invasion by the Garlean Empire from the north.

Anyways, I thought it was fun to look at. FFXIV is doing so well! Such growth! So what do you think!
Yea, i know it's an old meme, but Sylvanas made us free at the end of BFA.
I must say, I appreciate the blotted out spoilers. Nice video too, subbed.
no king rules forever.
Isn't MMO population the website that says dead/offline MMOs as actually have players? I mean, I think they say that wildstar and Star wars galaxy still has players, and both of those MMOs died a long time ago.
Edit – oh, yeah, I saw your update in the video. Yeah, definitely not a trustworthy website.
At 3:32 you say "Shadowlands" instead of "Shadowbringers"… what an unfortunate slip, yet maybe not wrong
I love what you put there, Shadowlands & Shadowbringers are too close and World of Warcraft SHOULD CHANGE their name.
Nice video, take my sub.
I should probably be sick and tired of hearing how my MMO of choice is winning, but …….. somehow I'm not!
Man if those FF14 numbers are close to right. FF14 is destroying WoW after you factor in the shear amount of alts.
I've been in a bunch of guilds over the last several years, and I can't think of anyone that doesn't have at least 3 alts that they log into on occasion.
Its interesting to hear how they gathered the data. Love learning something new and its great to see how well FF14 is doing
I'm a casual player, but to see the entire story in Shadowlands, I had no choice but to have 4 level 60s. Given how trivially easy it is to level in WoW now, most people I knew had at least 3 characters. You can get from 1 – 50 in about 12 hours (or use your free boost for buying the expansion) and leveling from 51-60 didn't take all that long, especially with Threads of Fate. So I wonder if "3 alts per character" is really the "worst" case scenario given that the only players left playing in August would have been the hardcore players, all of whom have more than 3 characters.
Not to be super anal on this, but a lot the bot accounts who play on NA servers at least are based in countries like Venezuela where the sub cost is much lower. Not to mention other bots that are "free" because they buy time with gold they are farming. Now, Blizzard still makes money off them, but he number of bots is off the charts high sometimes.
those queues no joke. I tried logging in at around 3am EST and there was still a queue.
