  1. What do you think? It's is the RPG elements that set FFXIV apart?? Let me know!

  2. I beta tested WoW, have played on and off since then–pretty steadily since Warlords. I am just kind of fed up with: 1) being a murder hobo; 2) the borrowed power systems; and 3) no real attachment to the story of characters any more. I played FFXI and did not like it at all (far too group-centric). I played FFXIV version 1 and it didn't seem different enough from FFXI, so I dropped it. Heard a lot of good buzz about the game and (more importantly) my wife decided she wanted to try it again, so we did. Currently have L 50 DRG, L49 PLD (that is my job for doing the MSQ), L 50 in the crafts except culinarian, and a few other jobs at L 15-20 (I am a schoolteacher on summer break, so LOTS of time to play). Enjoying the game, especially the crafting and the story. The environment seems a lot calmer and less toxic, it is alt friendly (because you do not need any) and I always feel like I have something useful (and character progressing) to do. Not really an RPGer in that I do not actively roleplay, but the story is a major point for me. Working my way along as I look forward to Endwalker.

  3. I absolutely love the in game item store being tucked in the browser account management system. Opening up the game and being welcomed with "okay more money please" is such a massive turn off

  4. Bought FFXIV last year october. After the 30 day game time included in it was up I quit. Because I only played games without games without gametime. So I was so annoyed that I had to pay to play after I bought it that I didn't touch it again until the beginning of the last month.
And Oh Boy I am asking myself everytime why I have waited so long its Amazing. Also I am a sucker for Story in a Game. So this is Amazing

  5. I am a veteran RO and TOS player, and the video basically lists the problems it faced for the last 7 years
TOS's journey was fairly similar to FFXIV, but the recovery, in my opinion, took too long to be delivered. Now the game just got his 3rd gameplay rework on the testing servers (Korean test server) and the community is expecting it will save the game for a little longer.
I also played RO a lot, and I lost my hope on Gravity (its developer) after they announced several max level increases without making nor updating the content itself.

  6. And yet… revenue is still up. And that is all that matters. As long as it makes money, then the 'engagement' (read: time sinks) spreadsheets will top content and the endgame ladder is all that matters.

  7. This game gives me fun and engagement that's easy to get in to, and hasn't made it feel too grindy. When I see how the community of this game acts, this all makes sense. The story is engaging, most players are nice, it's got a nice flow as you level/ play… it's just fun!

  8. Yoshi-P and the Dev team play All the content privatly Yoshi-P and the dev team play at HIGH end Game Content. Which is why they know nerfs/buffs needed. Also is why PLD and BLM has the least amount of greif with changes. Yeah don't skrew up the bosses classes.

  9. Asheron's Call on the Darktide server was probably the most fun I've ever had in an MMO (and I did play UO as well, back in the Dread Lord days), because even though there was a monthly update that progressed the story in the world along and added new quests and stuff, it was the players who were ultimately left to create their own world and narrative. The political landscape on Darktide was engaging and varied, with certain towns and areas being held by Anti-PKs, so you knew you had a relatively safe area to do things, and other towns and areas held by PK's who would frequently attack each other too (sort of like pirates or the Wild West). There were massive wars held over leveling grounds and towns, attacks on strongholds that saw tons of players get called in to attack/defend, and the devs didn't have anything to do with it, it was all player created.

That to me is the greatest thing an MMO can do: provide the framework, and occasional updates to add new cool things, but mostly let the players decide how they want the world to be. In UO this was also the case (although NPC town guards existed which hampered it a little), and the most fun I've ever had was trying to get away with stealing people's shit in UO, and running with the Smurfs on Darktide ganking whoever we came across 😛

Too much structure in an MMO ruins it in my opinion. When you compartmentalize everything and make everything instanced or part of a random group finder or whatever, you entirely remove the MMO part of it 😛 That's part of why WoW is struggling (apart from the terrible story now).

  10. Another point: There's a difference between listening to your community, and pandering to the loudest parts of your community.

WoW does the latter, and it has practically ruined the game. FF14 has done the former, and has made it stronger and more fun.

This impacts the overall community. I, as a new MRD, tanked my first ever dungeon in 14 the other day (I'm not new to tanking, been doing it in WoW for 17 years). As soon as I got in 2 of the people in the party were talking about bailing because they didn't realize it was level synced so low, but then I let them know I was new and I'd do my best and they immediately turned around and were like "let's give this man the best experience ever" and were giving me all kinds of helpful tips and were super kind.

If the same thing had happened in WoW, I'd be sitting in queue again after everyone bailed because new tanks suk and so do I, while telling me how they fucked my mom or something.

Blizzard communities are all super toxic, especially now. I've had nothing but love from ESO and FF14, and it makes my dreary existence a little brighter.

  11. Gratz for FFXKV, a great game. When he says he uses wow as inspiration, he means that whole concept of playing it to see what was fun. I remember an early interview with him back in the RR days when he said that one of the first things he did was make his developers play wow, and discuss what they found FUN in the game. I think to this day they still do that, unlike Activision, which reads pie charts and says it hears the playerbase.

  12. FFXIV none static runs felt like it was mostly casual players who didn't care about knowing mechanics or their job rotations. It never really mattered because 99% of the time we cleared. Although i do remember runs that took too long to clear ending with everyone leaving. In WoW it's the reverse. When i took a break from FFXIV and played WoW that felt reversed. It was silent elitism but it didn't feel overtly toxic at least from what i experienced.

Both have toxic members. I have seen FFXIV none hardcore raiders go nuclear if someone had a suggestion or gave any constructive feedback if the groups wiped. In WoW it would escalate from silence to insults if someone asked a question without a wipe.

  13. I can hear BDO server chat already starting arguing about your claim that their game's shop is P2W
Listen, there are two types of BDO players:
    – Those that say the game is P2W
    – And those that are in denial about it

  14. I mentioned on some other video similar to this….that there is a difference between Blizzard as a developer and developers working for Blizzard.

I think the people actually MAKING the game, putting in the work do care and do feel bad when people say they don't listen. They just don't have a choice when told to do their job.

It's Blizzard (probably Activision 🤑) that gets the final say

  15. I feel the same way as you said about changing my catgirl's haircut (also a guy xD) it would feel wierd to continue the story with a different appearance, after all my character has been through. I even keep doing the MSQ with the job that i started it all.

  16. FFXIV isn’t just a good MMO, it’s a good RPG and a good game period. The team’s love and care in making it, bringing it from the 1.0 brink and evolving what they ended up with in ARR to now, is apparent and obvious. I never thought I’d say an MMO expansion would be one of my favorite game experiences in terms of story with THE best villain of any FF game but, well here I am and that’s Shadowbringers. I can’t wait for Endwalker and seeing all of these new players coming to the game makes me really happy.

  17. yoshi-p and his team love the game AND the players because they are gamers too. easy. and of course they want to make money too, but its about both. activision only cares about money and they think the key is e-sport and thats because every efford goes into m+. because of that the rpg element is dead, nobody cares about the story and now you have something like a moba with timegated and meanigless openworld content. played since tbc and it hurts to see how they crap on the legacy of the morhaimes&metzens.

  18. i think mmo's have seen a boost in popularity and that could also account for evolution? idk i remember back when wow first started it was considered shameful to be an open mmo player. nowadays ppl talk more openly about the mmo's they play. it's like the genre was in a bubble that burst and rather than accept and embrace it blizz is trying to put the bubble back together (with gum and scotch tape).

  19. The conduit system canbe changed but you have to manage how often one does this within a 1 week window.
You have a limited amount of changes allowed depending on how many conduits you swap out.

Also a major issue/problem with the game is the pay to win system that Blizzard capitalizes on.
Due to all the carries being done many have resorted to buyin gwow tokens and taking the 180k gold yield per token and buying carries in raids, mythic dungeons and arena or rated BGs.

This has been lucrative for blizzard as it fills in their margins due to loss of subs.
The issue is that this direction is on par with the China version/enviroment of the game where carries are so rampant that many pugs or regular formed groups are compromised buy bought carries and the game has become unplayable/enjoyable.

Feedback in the forums has a behavior rating now and one is limited on what words and verbage one can use such as "Using the words Devs & Blizz is frowned upon and will not have a high chance of response etc."

If one posts a fact that is not well received by by Blizzard or Devs such as "Druids and Pallys are over represented in BGs, arenas etc (which they were and may still be) the team will flag your post and remove it instead of doing research and leg work to find ways to improve the attractiveness of other classes.

That example is a clear example of the culture that has consumed the company where there is a lack of service, care or receptiveness to the community.

In short the mentallity that Blizzard has is "we dont want you saying anything that can be constructive that we personally do not like if you criticize we will ostracize."

The sad thing is that most players want WOW to succeed and to be a good game and have fun. I beleive they have lost this direction whereas FFA looks to be conscious of this idea.

  20. My first MMO game was about 1994 was a complete text game called Gemstone III. It was immersive, very creative, social and like FFXIV, player driven. It lost out to the games with all the pretty graphics. I have been playing FFXIV for 2 years. Love it. I subscribed btw to your channel.

  21. Blizzard = Test our game for us in PTR and BETA, we'll still release the game broken and with bugs though.

FFXIV = No PTR or BETA, we test our own game and release it fully functional

  22. 25:29 The problem is that it does effect those who want to wow for an hour or 2 at the end of the day. With the systems Wow has in place now once you hit max level you have nothing else to do unless you raid. Content is handed out in 30 min chunks over months. The thing I have loved about FF14 is there is so much to do and even when you hit max level you are are not running around in circle in the major city.

  23. I started Playing FFXIV last week, and I stopped Playing wow. I began my wow journey from Vanilla, and it's been trash since BFA… Completely broken and purely a cash grab now. I finally cancelled my sub and gave up. I have a lot of very rare things in the game that have been removed for over a decade, and maybe that's what kept me going for so long, but no more. The FFXIV community is a stark difference to Blizzards indifference, and is what ultimately gave me the final nudge to make some changes in what I will put up with and pay for. I bought the complete edition and subbed and don't plan on looking back. Blizz blew it. They had the resources, and they cut every possible corner to squeeze every last cent. And that's not even considering how they laid off hundreds of employees right before Christmas or banned the protestor, cheated people when they didn't pay out after they sold all those little "dolls". They are obscene in their greed. It's disgusting, and I don't want anything further to do with them. They are beyond redemption at this point.

  24. I never thought I would see the day when the company that saved us old EverQuest players from Sony Online Entertainment's "This is what you want and we're the only choice" attitude would be the one with that very same attitude. Granted, all of the old guard are gone and it is hardly Blizzard anymore, but the fact remains that they became what I was saved from. I've been in a sort of benefit-of-the-doubt state of denial with Blizzard for a few years now. Hard for me to say that I'm no longer a fan after being one from 1998 until earlier this year. Switching to FFXIV has been so very different and amazing. Not just the game either. The community, the devs… can't gush enough.

  25. I've started playing in the recent days and I'm having a great time with the game. Still, I'm at lvl 32 and, granted, the story is nice, but no fetch quests? are you kidding? Is pretty much everything you do when you start the game. At one point I had to go talk to a goblin on behalf of a guy who was down the hallway. You deliver so much letters you'd think you're bein trained to be a mail man.

Yes, I know it gets better later, I'll keep going, but come on, the early levels are like working for a courier app.

  26. Thumbnail says FFXIV is beating WoW, in other words they are in the lead. Are they leading in terms of player numbers then? That's the first thing to assume as many will rank the "winning" MMO as the one with the most players. Or was it meant more vaguely like it's a personal opinion that they have a better game, therefore they are "winning" or something

  27. FFXIV: The players don't like this feature and we agree from when we were playing our own game it feels bad we will remove it next patch.

Blizz: Players say they don't like dumb secondary systems but maybe they just don't have enough so next patch we are adding 3 more forms of currency you must farm, 5 new required rep grinds, and also introducing the new shoulder mounted evil dark god laser bat mechanic which will require you to farm the infinite tower for 5 more hours every week to get bat food and also we feel players were having to much fun so all classes will only have auto attack now.

  28. Mostly good analysis, but your character in WoW not being the center of the universe isnt a bad thing, in fact from a story telling perspective in the context of the Warcraft world, it makes more sense that way.

  29. I think Yoshida is a genius and if he keeps doing what he's been doing, I can see this game finally becoming what all MMOs should be like. If at any point he stops doing what he does, the game will slowly fail.
