This was actually so interesting to watch! how long does it actually take for a group to finish this? would i be stupid to tank or heal? what do all the markers mean??

from what i remember it's a lot of very specific and practiced movements and memorization of patterns to do a fight that takes about 20 minutes XD and yes, the big wall that had you confused was tank lb3, which doesn't come up very often.
Have not done one and are not thinking about doing one ether
I think what you consider a "raid" would be the 24-person alliance raids, like the Crystal Tower series. However, in XIV, a raid is an 8-man boss encounter or, in the case of ultimates, boss rushes. There are 3 tiers of 8-man raids in XIV; from lowest to highest they are Normal, Savage, and Ultimate, as well as Extreme Trials, which are between Normal and Savage raids in difficulty. Each are unique in their own way. Extremes are the harder versions of normal trial fights and generally aren't considered raids even though they work the same as other raids. Most people can clear Extremes. Normal raids are easy and meant to be completed by anyone who cares to try. Each raid series has its own storyline as well. Savage raids are the hard versions of Normal raids and are not really meant to be clearable by everyone. Ultimates are the hardest content in XIV and arguably the hardest content in any mmo. One or two death can mean your dps won't be good enough to clear before the enrage timer goes off. A wipe means you have to reset to either the last checkpoint or the very beginning. It can take months to learn an Ultimate and 20 minutes or so to beat the fight
The flashiness or other distractions, like the larger summoner summons, cause many people to turn down the effects in general and for other parties or one's own party members. But some effects remain in full effect regardless due to benefiting other party members. For better or worse, this also includes the Limit Breaks, of which jobs like Red Mage can literally flashbang everyone else and risk causing a wipe since no one can see the arena.
you can turn off your and others liting effects in menu, helps with seeing mechs
Do one 🙂 UwU (Ultima Weapon Ultimate) is a long fight but each phase isnt considered very difficult. TEA (The Epic of Alexander) I have cleared several times and its a lot of fun, and quite digestible if you learn each phase like its a separate fight. Ultimates run anywhere from around 17-20 minutes. Wipe and start at 0 except for certain ones that have a checkpoint. Yes, after progging a fight for a long time knowing your place just becomes muscle memory, the fights usually take a lot of pulls to learn but everyone knowing their part and executing is the important part. Everyone doing their job and clearing the mechanics cleanly is how you get clears. Take a look at a TEA playthrough, its a great fight with fantastic music.
Has anyone recommended a Sufferhymn video yet?
This is an interesting video to view it through. Some players here have other people's spell effects on (the Bard PoV does, for example) and some don't (the Dragoon PoV). Most people don't play with all the spell effects on (there is an option to "show limited" where you only see other people's spell effects that are relevant to you, like a "Stand in this for healing" puddle or something).
Also shoutout to the ranged player at 7:26 dying to the bomb boulder but they cut to another pull lol.
Also this footage is from 3 expansions ago now, so a lot of the buttons they have are no longer in the game.
I've cleared this fight. It's a lot of fun. The stress goes away the more you get used to the fight. That said, expect a LOT of wipes. UwU you get to skip a whole phase by battering down Lahabrea with Limit Break 3s.
Best way to think of Ultimates is a Boss Rush. With a whole new mechs for those bosses.
Your reward is a title and really cool shiny weapons.
Something cool about this fight that isn't very intuitive if you don't know it well:
Each of the primals that die have a puzzle associated with them. You can kill them normally and move onto the next primal just fine but if you "awaken" them via solving their puzzle (this involves doing the mechanic in a harder and less intuitive way) they drop a buff called Beyond Limits. If you have this buff when you use the Limit Break 3, you get to use it for free. In order to beat Lahabrea, the team has to use EVERY Limit Break 3 in the game. The caster's is used to kill all the bits in a circle that will enrage in a couple seconds after they spawn. Lahabrea puts a doom debuff that will kill everyone in a couple seconds if they aren't brought to full hp, so Healer limit break. Lahabrea himself spawns and needs to be killed quickly, melee. Then Ultima Weapon appears to cast the spell from the MSQ that Hydaelyn shielded you from so the tank without any buff spends the actual Limit Break bar.
I have a feeling we're going towards into a lore where we will finally meet the full version of Ultima. So far, we have seen the sundered or primal version of it. I can't wait to see what it will be like to finally fight it.
It honestly might be best to hear someone explain all the mechanics individually in a video, because there's a lot to keep track of. Technically this isn't even the first ultimate, it's the second one. The first one was a Bahamut Ultimate that most people consider at least slightly harder than the second one.
Here's the thing about XIV markers: They're not so much about "stand here to resolve mechanic" (most of the time). They're more like a way to indicate a general direction. You can tell your group "go east," but unless they have just practiced the fight a bunch, generally, they will all go in different directions. But if you tell your group "Go to B," thats something they can see, and they have a much higher chance of actually going there. As such, markers are usually placed in a small circle around the arena to indicate cardinal and intercardinal directions. Ultimates are a bit weird in this respect though, and the markers that we use for this fight now don't look anything like this.
yes it's fun and yes it's stressful.
If you want a more challenging big group content then look at Baldesion Arsenal or Delubrum Reginae (Savage) there's not a lot of that type of content in 14 right now. We expected another big group content later in Dawntrail patch content
This fight is considered the easiest ultimate, my group took a little over 300 pulls for it, which might even be on the higher side for a premade/guild group.
I’ve also done TEA and DSR. About 840 pulls for TEA and a bit over 1400 for DSR.
I’ve raided a lot of mythic in WoW, and IMO very few fights in WoW compare to the fun of progging ultimates. Stuff like Tindral or Uunat might be the best comparison. A good way to think about ultimates is that they’re an entire mythic raid tier compressed into one 13-20 minute boss.
