Final Fantasy 14 has so much going for it right now, but for it to truly work, World of Warcraft will need to dig deep and learn those lessons.

  1. You mentioned a lot of things to do in FFXIV, and I can seem like a lot to new players, but a lot of content isn't necessary and can be done at anytime without any pressure (except for the pressure you place on yourself).

  2. After doing the second Awakening questline in Lost Ark, WoW could really learn from this aswell. 4-5 hour quest, with narrative ties, revisiting old areas and seeing old faces that ends in a power gain. Versus WoW's little narrative relevance 30 days of repeating WQs for the power gain.

  3. Instant ways to improve the game:
    – Get rid of class restriction
    – Faction guilds, might even open up the possibility for a third faction with new races that have no favor towards either side
    – Separate major servers, pair them with smaller servers, and reduce the overall total servers that have died off
    – Three-person (or more) mounts
    – Take notes from the videos of private servers; they have some great ideas, and the company has the funds to utilize them for their own
    – Place more around-the-clock content, cut out the limited-time establishments like Darkmoon Faire (if anything must be limited, simply change up the buffs the carousel can give)
    – Make the 'old world' content relevant and updated

Those are just some ideas, and already the game would see more activity and praise. These won't happen, naturally; the game is 'functioning as intended' according to the rainbow monkeys sticking their fingers into the pot.

  4. Fixing WoW is simple: stop putting retention mechanics in it. that's it, simply change the philosophy of design. The build the game to keep you subbed as long as possible, stop doing that. Just make it fun, let people leave when they want to leave, then come back when new content comes out. If they can beat a patch in a week, great! let them beat the patch in a week and unsub, then come back once a new patch comes out.

  5. If Kugane Tower was in WOW, it would be required to get an important currency. And you would have to do it once a week. FFXIV is like…here, you can do this if you want, no rewards other than bragging rights.

  6. These little bubbles in FFXiV as Accolonn mentioned also gives rewards or benefits to other endeavors. Such as Squadron. You get to choose and train your own personal Army and have them go through missions. You can also bring them along for Dungeons. As far as I remember, this was one of the best ways to level your alt Jobs. Squadron could also reward you with a special scroll that hasten your sprit bonding. Which can be combined with Spirit bonding potions. Each equipment you are wearing has a Spirit Level. When this reaches 100, you can convert that level into Materia. The greater the iLvL of the equipment, the higher the Materia level. I use this method while crafting. As I make pots for raid, I am also accumulating Spirit level. At the end of my crafting session, i have several crafting materias gained from it. And these materia can be used for your gear or sell it for big profit.
