Inner chaos puts the mob into the abyss
did anyone say Fel cleave? I'm leveling up my warrior right now. I have paladin and Dark knight at 60 already. my personal favorite so far is Dark knight, but warrior is no slouch for sure. I feel like Paladin makes the most useful off tank, because he has that barrier that protects everything infront of it, so you can absorb some of the damage your co-tank is taking when they are tanking right? I don't think any other tank has this. maybe I'm wrong.
but yeah, so far, Dark knight is my favorite. havent tried Gunbreaker yet.
like almost everyone, I started my MMO journey as a dps. but over the years, I found that, competing for the top spot on a meter wasn't for me, because if you aren't in the top 5 or so, what use are you to your raid? Tanking is so much simpler. you hit the boss and make sure he keeps hitting you and noone else and then you are doing your job. there is no meter you need to be on top of or anything to be good at your job. This is why I am now a tank main. Alternatively, if I must dps, I prefer ranged, so I'll level Machinist too. I might level Dragoon, because it looks cool. haven't decided yet. I don't think I could main a dragoon. melee dps stresses me out. As a person that plays MMOs with one hand, I find tanking the easiest.
First time tank here, this got me excited to get into harder content! Iâve always loved the fantasy of playing a tank but was always too nervous to play it in other games.
I main healer in most games and nothing is more nerve wracking than tanking new dungeons. Definitely not comfortable tanking on trials/bosses with more complex mechanics that require shirking.

It's tricky for me tbh. Been playing MMOs like 12 years never have run any tanks or healers. Granted let's take WoW back in the day the negative attitude if a tank or healer messed up made me avoid it so after quitting that forever ago games like Wildstar, swtor, GW2 in recent years I barely even ran melee classes outside rogue type ones just to avoid anyone asking me to learn to tank. In FF14 now I'm at idk 52 on my Black Mage and started a couple low level jobs like archer, blue mage, rogue and have leveled fishing decent. I doubt I'd enjoy tanking or healing as i'm possibly too casual honestly but jobs like dark knight or gunbreaker seem interesting if not just the story of course but I wouldn't want to be forced into dungeons and completely suck for the group so idk.
It's weird going from tanking in Tera where it's very reactive and with Brawler you can just dash through the whole dungeon and pick up every add in the dungeon and stack them together to now tank in FFXIV where it feels much more premeditated and strategic where there are no AoE pulls and you have to actually work to hold aggro on everything because losing aggro in FFXIV is WAYYYYY more common than any other mmo i've played. I love tanking in FFXIV although I think aggro pulls could use some work. Also specifically for DRK it's annoying because you have to spam your single AoE GCD most of the time just to maintain aggro until you hit like 72 or whatever when you FINALLY get a second AoE (which pal gets at like 40). Heals pulling aggro also kind of rubs me the wrong way. Only because it just makes it extra annoying to play with inexperienced healers and sometimes I actually have to fight for aggro with healers if they heal too fast.
Always appreciate our tank being polite and giving us our 10-5 second timer before a pull.
Offtopic but u look like matthew lillard.
Can you do a video on two tanks? I'm passionate about tanking but don't know what to do 2 tanks, also tank busters and how to recognize them. any help would be greatly appreciated, I wan to move to paladin I'm about to finish 5.2-5.3 shb MSQ on my bard have a level 52++ tank. And really want to switch to her. Off my bard, though I love bard.
I've just leveled my Paladin to 60 over the last few days and I was actually surprised how relatively long it took for my queues to pop. Especially when compared to the White Mage I leveled before that. Will see whether it changes drastically during the weekend.
ive seen tanks just solo bosses towards the end of fights if the party wipes. Paladins are just broken.
Just a side note about countdowns being optional, once you get to Extremes+ they aren't. If you pull without a countdown everyone's going to jump off the arena and tell you to use one, if you don't after that youre going to be kicked.
tank que is no were near instant, i was having over 10 min wait times, which was longer then my first role i lvled (dps draggon). Healer on the other hand has been instant ques, theres to many tanks on every world and a massive lack of healers
My server the Tank queues are matching DPS, Healer are all instant pop. Is it just my server with this issue?
As a newly minted Paladin I'm enjoying tanking. Maybe on the higher level my mind would change.
FFXIV has the funnest tanking of any MMO. I prefer healing and DPSing design in most MMOs, but in FFXIV, the tanks have all the fun. I know they say Yoshi's main is a Black Mage, but somebody on that team really gets what tanks want to be doing to have fun.
Tanking in FF is a role that is the most rewarding when you have a meta view of the gameplay that's happening, whereas a DPS is more rewarding when you have a micro view of things. By this I mean that tanking satisfaction comes from controlling the boss well, tracking the party's positioning and adjusting the boss' positioning so the DPS can completely disappear into the tiny world of their rotation and squeeze out every ounce of damage they have. It's about feeling good that you're taking the hit that would floor anyone else in the party.
And this is why tanks are often the shotcallers in raids and trials. It's already their job to keep track of what the boss is doing, so they might as well call it out. Most DPS are too focused on uptime and keeping track of their resources, while healers are constantly checking whether or not someone fucked up and needs an emergency top-up or rez.
Casual content as a tank does get boring faster than the other jobs, because the meta view that allows you to really enjoy the role isn't necessary, if applicable at all. But in harder content it truly shines as you guide your party while controlling the enemy, and quite literally create a situation for success.
