Why I will never play Final Fantasy XIV

Final Fantasy XIV is a popular MMORPG, and while it has garnered the goodwill of a multitude of gamers, there’s one thing about it that is a stench to me and keeps me away from playing it.

  1. You can try the game until heavensward expansion. It's all free and then decide if it's worth the monthly fee or not. This game gets update every 3 months like none any other game.

I was in the same shoes as you back then. I can't justify buying the game then paying to play it…but opinion changes…

  2. As said before, there is a pretty good trial that extends to Heavensward, reaching lvl 60 of 80, and it has an amazing story. As for the expansions, you only need to buy the latest one and it includes all of them so it's just 1 payment if you are joining now. The 12 DLS per month covers a lot of content as we get more and more patches and content through the years of that each expansion lasts. XIV has a very punctual and reliable schedule of updates and it has stayed within reason even during the high points of the pandemic

  3. To be honest, you have a very valid reason. FFXIV is pretty much a financial choice, but nobody is telling you you have to subscribed full time to enjoy it.

Free Trial let’s you play the base game and Heavensward completely before the start of Stormblood. Even then, there’s still a lot of content with base game and first expansion.

If you decide to buy Endwalker (which is smarter financial wise when that expansion is released) you’d get 30 days for free.

It is also possible to catch up to current content in 30 days if you have the time. But most importantly it’s all up to you really. It’s always your choice. You can always enjoy it when someone else streams. If you do get it with a subscription, awesome! You can cancel subscription anytime you want and it’ll stop when your sub days expire. There’s so much financial freedom. They’re not forcing you to open your wallet.

  4. Even Yoshida says you don't have to stay subscribed. Finish the content, wait 2 or 3 patches(or a expansion) and come back later.

You aren't being nickel and dimed. The patch content is substantial(main story content, parts of raid or trial series, side content like deep dungeons or hildebrand quests etc.) the devs work for that sub fee. The patches are equivalent to old school rpg expansions, 20 to 40 hours of new content.

  5. I started playing the free trial of ffxiv and was a nearing the end of arr when I realized I needed to give squeenix some money for this game. Extremely engaging and although it shows its age in parts, they really have crafted an amazing world packed full of stuff.

As for costs I ended up paying £20 for game and another £18 for 2 months subscription. This gave me a total of 90 days of playtime for less than £40. I've spent more on a game that has lasted me less than a week.

I find your reasoning a bit short sighted considering you can play up to and including heavensward for FREE(no subscription).
