Why I Started Playing WoW as a FFXIV Player – First Impressions

Remember, no hate towards anyone. I just wanted to know what WoW was like after not really trying to play it after so many years. Why was it being abandoned and why was it so celebrated. My impression was quite the surprise.

  1. You need to start off on WoW classic…that's what captured it's fans not the new garbage they release. Pretty sure they will release WoW Wotlk classic which I would say was prime world of Warcraft.

  2. (Hopefully you'll see this or it'll be repeated by someone else later for you.) In regards to music, go into the sound options and turn on the repeat option. It makes things SO much better without playing other music! The problem isn't so much that the music is bad, it's that they made the pauses between when it plays waaaaaay too long.

Also, go look up Kharazan music. It legit made the raid feel like the building itself wanted to murder you and your dog. It's by far my favorite zone music in the game to date, with the music for Grizzly Hills a close second.

  3. The difference between WoW music and FF14 music is that WoW conveys theme by giving you music drawn from the feel of the world where FF14 uses the opposite, the feel of the music is what draws you into the world and the emotions of the moment.

WoW feels like you're listening to a bard somewhere in the distance playing you tunes or a priestess singing you the song of her people.
FF14 is like "You are the mother F-ing Hero of Light, let's run through The Twinning and have some fun!"

I love these big moments in FF14 where you're just saying "This is ridiculous and fun!" but often I feel a big disconnect from the world itself compared to wow. WoW feels like most everything belongs within the world from the creatures to the encampments of enemies and such, FF has a disconnect in that regard where you just go "I have no clue what the hell this thing is but it looks cool, can't wait to fight it!"

Polar opposite takes on the same formula. You can taste the cultural differences and it's a really interesting study on how the west and east tackle story telling and such.

  4. Retail wow is 0% like Vanilla, and classic is 0% like TBC. Everybody knows everything, and min/max the fun out of everything with elitist gatekeeping attitudes. You'll see ~

  5. Im sad for you that you started in a the Draenei starting zone, its honestly worse than even the classic zones, pre-revamp. All of the other races had their classic-style starting zones redone, but the Draenei didnt. The Worgen (non-dk lol) starting zone is fantastic and i think youd enjoy it

  6. Questing even tough its the slowest way to level up, its quite relaxing. The dungeons are cancer because of rushers. And the story is very disconected in game (no main quest). But many maps look beautiful. It has lots of good things, but older players already burned all content which blizzard slowly delivers even tough they ask you 15 dollars a month. And most players only care about raiding. For a new player, if you are not interested on rushing to endgame, you have lots of stuff to do, but its not gonna be a breathtaking experience.

  7. Liked the video overall but I have a few points of my own.
As far as WOW having a "WALL OF TEXT!" FF has as much it's just parsed out in 1-6 chat bubbles. You can do the same thing in WOW if you use an addon called "Immersion" it breaks up the wall into smaller chat windows like FF and makes following the text/lore easier. If your ok will multiple addons (I'd recommend the CurseForde desktop app.) then with Immersion try "DialogKey" which allows you to use the spacebar to scroll through the Immersion dialog and to use the SB for other items like "delete This item?" ones.
Not sure how you feel about addons but those are two simple ones and may want to check YT for videos on top ones.
Playing FF now and my major issue is the loading as I move from some of the starting areas to the outer areas. Also, the quest is a bit hard to see sometimes on the map, the little Red areas can be too light to see sometimes. Also if you have an issue in WOW for seeing where items or mobs are on your map turn on the "Quest Location POIs" in the little magnifying area of the minimap. It helps!
Two other add-ons to look into are ZPerl Unit Frames, and Sexmap. Both help a lot with any layout issues.
Hope it helps a newer WOW player. >; >

  8. Play tbc classic dude if you want the experience people fell in love with..its the closest youll get and even that is not the same. Retail is fine…just dont expect a lot of convo with other players.

  9. You haven’t even gotten into the real gripes being the secondary systems you have to grind. Grinding islands, azerite or now shards of domination have made the game I love horrible. Working for hours to build your power up just go have the secondary power systems nullified the next patch snd have to start all over is very frustrating.

  10. I appreciate this video and I've been trying out FFXIV the past week. I think as far as story goes they're two opposite extremes: WoW's has so many cool and interesting stories and quests, but it does such a terrible job of conveying any of it. It allows players to just skip past everything so unless they go and watch some lore videos they'll probably never know any of top tier stories being told and have no fucking clue what's going on haha. On the opposite side, Final Fantasy makes sure that you read every bit of dialogue and don't miss any bit of story, but I almost think it overdoes it. I think the unmissable in your face nature of FFXIV's storytelling is great for the main story, but it honestly gets pretty obnoxious when every little side quest or NPC you talk to tells you their life story like bro I don't care I'll do whatever you want me to do fam just don't make me watch a cutscene and skip through 10 slides of dialogue of you talking about absolute bullshit haha

  11. You should go to Exile's Reach Island and then continue to level through Battle for Azeroth. That is intended new player experience. I have no idea what you are doing. In wow you don't play old expansions anymore and it looks to me you are leveling through Cataclysm content

  12. What you should understand trying to understand the essence of WoW before everything… wow started as a sad copy of Warhammer since Blizzard wasn't able to get the rights to the name and story. So since we got that fact out of the way. You should understand that in warhammer there is only war….and in world of WARcraft… there is only war….music reflects that part in many ways.

  13. haha, wait until you hit max level and realise you cant even change specs when you want, let alone switch "Job" when you want. among other countless grinds.
Edit: You seem to be critiquing the game from 15 years ago, no hate that is around atm is aimed at that part of the game.

  14. Playing your own music during Wow stuff is pretty common for people, alot of people either use no sounds at all or just have the voice lines for raids.

  15. Lol that outfit is nice but wow had a lot of sets and customizable pieces made into a set that absolutely shits on your Glamour despite FFXIV definitely having cooler gear. As someone who played for 13/14 years(every Xpac except MOP) I can tell you you're mostly spot on. Things annoy me in both mmos but the peak of wow was amazing and I'm still waiting to catch-up to the peak of FFXIV(on Dragonsong).
Gameplay: Slow and methodical vs fast and methodical. Tossup.
Art: cartoony badass vs realistic and badass. tossup.
Music: ambient vs actual music. FFXIV takes the edge.
Overall: once great vs currently great. I enjoyed my experience in WoW but it's nearing a close and I'm happy to be playing FFXIV.

  16. I really like flight paths. It gave you time to sit around. smoke a bowl. chat and chill out while you wait to get where you are going. plus you get to look around and see neato things in the world. The loading times are very little in old WoW. Which I REALLY liked but of course the game as gone to shit now and ffxiv is my home atm.

  17. Problem with WoW story is that the leveling kinda just ploughs you through. You would have to go out of your way to play through the story of one of the expacs. Until you get to SL.

  18. It's kind of funny. Your reasoning for questing where you really don't know whats going on story-wise and who the npc's are/not connecting with in wow is the same way i feel questing in FF14. I go to an npc, he/she has a massive dialogue of text where 3/4ths of the text has no relevancy to the quest, has you go to another npc in a different zone just to talk to, then has you go all the way back to the first npc. what was the god damn point in that quest???? lol

  19. been playing wow since BC,
ffxiv took what wow had, polished it, enhanced it, loved their community, didnt sexually harass their employees, and still humbly say "we didnt beat wow, it's a game we aspired to be like" yet we all know ff already took a huge shit on wow.

    Wow is the opposite.

  20. The music is one of the best parts of WoW tbh. In the early game up unto Mists of Pandaria music was really a driving immersion force. Especially if you are into orchestral themes and choirs, and Nightsong is one of the most popular pieces of music in the game. There are yt channels exclusively for WoW music, too, like wowmusicable.

  22. It's funny that you made a Draenei character because since the Cataclysm expansion, the Draenei starting area is literally the oldest content in the game.

You shouldn't have made a worgen death knight. That is Wrath content. You should have made basically any other class, since that would have had you going through the worgens' actual starting zone. Oh, and maybe make a panda because the Wandering Isle is pretty cool.

But I don't even know if that's possible now that Shadowlands is out. I think that maybe everyone gets shoved into to same starting zone, which would be a shame.
