Why I Play FFXIV with my Child

A video I’ve been meaning to make since we started the channel 3 years ago. Why I play FFXIV with Penny and some of the interesting benefits it has provided.

Be sure to watch “FFXIV Is it Safe for Kids?” https://youtu.be/0iz0GmVHicQ by Brian from Work to Game if you are curious to know how safe the game is for your child.

  1. These are all good points! One thing I'd point out is how playing a game like this helps develop fine motor skills. My daughter is still too young to play with me, but her practicing how to use the keyboard and mouse to look around (and sometimes fish) is I think a good exercise.

  2. Love your channel and love the reasons. You're right that kids need a good role model with them online and it's something I'm sure she'll always fondly treasure.

  3. nice vid, not had a chance to watch many of your recent streams and vids but still, nice one and hopefully it inspires other gamer parents to give games like this a try with their kid(s) 😀 Family gaming time is best time haha.

  4. I don't have any kids, don't plan to. I do have two nieces and a nephew. My oldest niece is now 11 and started watching me play FFXIV when she was about 6 or 7 one time on vacation. She was curious about everything I was doing and I explained in simple terms how tanks and dps and healers work. Then she watched me in a dungeon and the tank was losing aggro and she pointed it out saying they weren't doing a very good job, lol.

I think, other than just being something she can be interested in that her uncle likes, she also was attracted to my adorable lalafell character, chocobos, and moogles right off. She also loved the character creator. Around 8 I started letting her make characters and play whenever I was around. I let her use a controller because her hands were too small for the keyboard/mouse I use. She got some of the basics of combat down but wasn't really good at picking targets or moving out of AoEs, she also got scared any time she died and would refuse to re-try msq fights if she failed one. Also she is an alt-holic and has like 20-30 characters on my account, lol.

I wouldn't say the game has helped with anything like her reading since it's pretty spaced out when we get to play together, but it's been fun watching her reading improve over the past few years. When she started she couldn't read most of it, especially with a lot of the archaic language the localization team uses, but she's gotten better each time. She's also improved in her ability to use the controller and to play. We were playing yesterday when I was visiting for the 4th and she was understanding the different archer skills she was getting as I explained them and when to use them, and she also went right into retrying the msq fight she did with confidence. When I helped her by explaining she needed to focus on the adds first while the NPCs handled the boss it worked out. So for me it's been fun watching her grow, even though the game itself hasn't been the catalyst for her learning since it's only every few months she plays.

Not about to let her lose on the internet with her own copy of the game though!
