What Makes a Good FFXIV Zone? | SoH | #327

With new zones on the (distant) horizon, we discuss what we want to see in new zones by going through existing ones. What makes a good zone, and what makes a bad one? We also continue to read the Foxclon interview and learn more about the special task force at Square Enix – and sirens and flashing lights. And of course we read your MogMail!

  1. on zone music, one of the things that stuck out to me in elpis was that the song is short, and there is a small period of silence before it loops. makes me wonder if this kind of thing would make ultima thule less sonically exhausting

  2. when i enter a zone for the first time i explore each area and map it [ if not seperated by story arc ] while engaging each enemy at least once that i see, learning the surroundings, finding vistas. if the zone has great theme music i usually grind after fates to it, like elpis and ultima thule. if it is a terrible zone [ imo ] i will just finish the fates and quests and never return unless its a hunt or treasure map. some zones i wish were a bit larger to explore. definitely needs a great theme both night and day but that is in the eye of the beholder.

  3. About the no sound thing, at least the first few hours after previous episode release, I watched half of it on desktop and it was fine, then wanted to switch to mobile and it had no sound there, the comment was about that I believe

  4. I left the "no sound" comment because the YT vod legit had no audio for me when it first came out for some reason. Other YT videos were working fine so I have no idea why this one didn't but I checked again 10 minutes later and it was working so idk. Anyways love the show and sorry for any confusion, you guys make the middle of my week magical when these come out on YT. Thank you 💗

  5. The shadowbrigers battle theme sounds like that on purpose, It's to emphasize the stark difference between wimiscal light themed music, behalted by harsh thrashing dark themed music rebeling againist that established light!

  6. About sidequests and msq progression: after Endwalker’s launch, in some interview or other I remember Yoshi-P talking about the final touchups leading up to the launch, and one of them was considering how to pace the sidequest unlocks in Palaka’s Stand. He was concerned about exactly the same thing as you were, since the msq there has a lot of urgency and it doesnt make that much sense to take a day off to do all the sidequests while the breakout of Final Days panic is waiting for you to continue so it can progress.

  7. Judging a favorite zone is kind of difficult because I base it on so many different aspects. Aesthetically speaking places like the Hinterlands, Sea of Clouds, and in a depressing sort of way Azys Lla are all fantastic. They're memorable, they stand out, the quests and stories told there are pretty good, and they can be fun to randomly wander through.

They're even kind of fun to do FATEs in, though unless they add bicolors to previous expansion zones I don't see myself actually farming them. Got more than enough of that with my Anima weapons tyvm.

But in terms of navigation? Especially for S rank hunt marks, or even weekly B ranks? Worst zones in the entire game. Even Ruby Sea has some dignity in that regard, though I wish anyone trying to spawn that rainbow pancake the best of luck, never again.

I would've had my S rank tiger mount months earlier than I did if those zones weren't so horrific to get around, even zoning in from the north missed me more than a few Behemoth spawns, and the less said about figuring out what platform the flag is on in Sea of Clouds the better.

Hinterlands is pretty self explanatory since it doesn't have any aetheryte access directly. And Azys Lla is so bad that unless I was teleporting in the same minute the call went out I wouldn't bother, especially since it spawns near the Garlean encampment so much.

I don't care about the lore implications we need more aetherytes in the HW zones oTL
