  1. I think the idea of the WoW ghost town can have some indication of the core focus of each game. WoW is focused almost solely on end game right now: Raiding, M+, PvP. In the past, you would find Stormwind and Orgrimmar pretty busy. A lot of that was folks interested in RP, community and story. FFXIV has a focus on the story and a lot of the community is also into RP or just hanging out and the main cities are filled with characters. This may contribute to the ghost town idea; WoW could have about the same player count but they might all be in raids, dungeons, BGs, etc. RP dried up in WoW over the last 10 months, even on the RP server I was on. Maybe the red-headed step child of WoW, the RP and story players were actually keeping the world alive and vibrant?

  2. I would say that good games without bugs or other issues are rare nowadays. 14 is one of those high quality games that stand out from the crowd and we are seeing the results of it right now.

  3. Why are we using this website again? We already know for any game that place is very inaccurate. I get we don't have official numbers. But at least for WoW, Bellular method seems more reliable. Edit: Chris talked about it later lol. Agree with him, too many variables to use stuff like Reddit.

  4. In part, the numbers tell us that an awful lot of people are just blind followers of their favorite streamer. If Asmongold and Bellular started streaming Tic-tac-toe 2021, people would watch them and then play it themselves. That's not taking anything away from FFXIV, of course; many people who start playing FFXIV for whatever reason will continue playing because they genuinely like the game. But blind following is a thing, and it's part of why the numbers are big.

  5. Really like the content guys. Chris, thank you for pointing out what MMOpops actually is: a novelty but not robust nor provable in any way. You're always nailing it, thank you for bringing some common sense to youtube rant world. Gotta give my opinion on some of Brian's comments of (paraphrase) these numbers are better than nothing we gotta use what we have. That's a bit of a dicey take. I work in data and without some kind of pedigree behind what you have, well….you can make 1 = 2. Engagement is a VERY nebulous term, is extremely easy to fudge, and doesn't tell you much beyond 'something was clicked on'. Once you bring in something like reddit, twitter, or other social media, all you really have is a bunch of clicks but nothing on what that means. Data on engagement can be used very easily to trick some suits into getting some free money for some tech bros just as easily as actually showing some kind of conclusion. I think we can all take a look at the zeitgeist and go 'i think ffxiv is on the uptick and wow on the down'….but if we're gonna take quantifiable engagement….yeah, well, I don't think we can say that much cause hate clicks count the same. Heck, go take a gander at r/shitpostxiv….is that engagment?

  6. The first two hours of FFXIV are designed to teach game mechanics, learn the home zone, and get initiated into the story. And if one does the class quests, there is instanced content before the first dungeon. If the "early game" class rotations were more like they eventually get, some of us would have been overwhelmed and stopped playing within those first two hours. One can argue that folks who are used to third-person MMOs don't need two hours, but for those who lack that experience, two hours of easy, single-player intro is exactly the right ticket.

  7. Buying the game is the hardest part of getting into FFXIV, LITERALLY!. We had to come back to the process 3 different times before we figured out that the square store to buy the game and game its self used different accounts. I know there are people that get frustrated with that process and give up and go play something else.

  8. It's really interesting time that's for sure. I'm a long time FF player and haven't played WoW. The pressure for FF is it has to stick the landing with Endwalker, the players are really excited to see the end of the story line and while I am confident with their writers and track record of knowing their players they can do it, there is always the possibility of a Game of Thrones situation. Also if they don't get on top of the server issue the launch could be very frustrating.

WoW is clearly at a crossroads, the players have been unhappy for some time and with the problems are currently facing they have to get the next 12 months right. They need to make some pretty big moves right now and while they do still have a lot of players the danger of the game being seen as "dying" is a clear and present danger, for an MMO that can spell disaster. I hope, for the players and the innocent staff at Blizzard that they can right the ship, but it won't be easy.

  9. I feel like heat maps and social media are not a good way to gauge MMO engagement, at least for FFXIV. They don't have the problem of having nothing to do when there's nothing to do. FF fosters an environment where you can "do nothing" in the game but still have things to do. The RP community, housing community, chair meta and discord keeps people in the game itself or auxiliary outlets tied to the game, and away from forums and reddit when they run out of content. The FF community has always been kinda lowkey and insulated and this outpouring of Shadowbringers hype and free trial memes didn't really pick up into the mainstream until Shadowlands came out and underwhelmed a lot of people. It's been that way since Heavensward brought in the first big wave of WoW refugees; they come over (including myself), find a new game to fall in love with, and can't help but sing its praises to people disenfranchised with WoW or whatever other MMO they are playing.

I don't doubt that WoW's numbers are bigger, they have a bigger pool of returning players to bolster those. It's also a Western game and those tend to outperform Asian games in Western markets. But the numbers don't really matter. The energy around FFXIV is frenetic and that says something considering the game is in the midst of a content drought. I hope WoW can pull it together because competition is good, but I feel like it's too little, too late, and the game has reached a point where it needs something much more drastic than patching in changes. Whether or not they will commit to truly revitalizing the game is hard to say considering how they have many players that will keep playing no matter what.
