I played 2.0 I was a SMN main; to get a Summoner, you had to have Archanist at 30 and Thalmaturge at 15, once that happens you unlocked the Summoner questline, FF was good at letting you know once you reached a road block what you needed to do to proceed, the next quest would tell you [Requires Arch 30 Thalm 15], after getting SMN to 50 I ended up leveling all other classes to at least 15 then began leveling the ones I wanted to main (Summoner was main, had Scholar as my healer once I leveled Con to 15, and PLD was my Tank, I did not bother with much else)
On this topic, I highly recommend "The Fall and rise of Final Fantasy xiv" It's a 5+ year old youtube type documentary created by players that were and still are playing since 1.0. It focuses more on what 1.0 players had to put up with during ffxiv original launch.
Edit: there are around 10 episodes but at 10 minutes each.
There's a hanging guy in Ishgard, outside the Skysteel Manufactury. Up on some rafters.
Back before ShB Ast card used to each have unique effect which make some cards play well with certain jobs and not others.
The 2 that work for everyone is Balance (damage buff) and spear (crit buff).
Arrow (haste buff) was loved by black mage but not by other job since it made them clip with their oGCD and burn TP faster.
Bole (damage reduction) worked as extra reduction.
Ewer (MP regen) was only usually on healers since no one else worry about running out of mana.
Spire (TP regen) was considered useless since unless people get a lot of haste they would not be low on TP.
In other FF series, Bard can Heals and Revive, so as Monk, Paladin, maybe Dancer and of course Red Mages and Summoners.
