  1. If Endwalker delivers, and I hope it does, it may be what SE needs to take the #1 MMORPG spot. But on the other hand, with a lot more eyes on 14, if Endwalker doesn't deliver, it may be a blow to 14's growth.

  2. And probably the free advertising by the ff14 community that became a meme.

"Have you heard of the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV? With an expanded free trial which you can play through the entirety of A Realm Reborn and the award winning Heavensward expansion up to level 60 for free with no restrictions on playtime"

  3. If you're a player coming over from WoW now, there is a completely bonkers amount of content waiting for you. The way all content is evergreen means the WHOLE game is there waiting for you. I've already put in around 1,100+ hours and still haven't finished the MSQ.

  4. Couple quick things to note; the Dev team have improved tremendously over time despite their hardware constraints (1.0 crap), and have implemented things for Expansion and Major Patches to help curb the congestion. One sadly being the hold on creating new characters on certain worlds. Another is that they have a system in place that they can more or less flip a switch on and it changes lets say Lakeland into Lakeland 1, Lakeland 2, and Lakeland 3. They also have a whole brand new Data centering coming with launch which will have players switching to since its closer to home. Another awesome thing that you touched upon briefly is the "Gating" when the expansion launches with the full story, you can actually push the story to the side and unlock or do new side content, unlocking the new jobs and leveling them, working on DoL/DoH, etc etc. Some people likely wont touch the MSQ for a few days or so. Will it be a smooth launch? almost positively, absolutely not. But they have things implemented or in the works to help disperse some issues 🙂

  5. Even going back to the EA of 2.0, the dev team has always been on top of their game. If you want to talk about a big launch, HW was probably the most anticipated expac. Any of the issues I experienced during those years I barely remember, and the dev team was always quick to solve issues. The most mind blowing thing about ff dev team is for expacs/updates or any server changes is they are done "remote". They seem to have the testing, patching/changes down to the letter, and in some cases have finished maint earlier than expected. If there is "extended maint" they are always very vocal about it and let us know ahead of time.

Bugs are to be expected (every software dev knows this), and unless its game breaking they normally wait till the end of EA to address it. I'm confident that despite the massive growth in player base the dev team can fully handle it. They've already set the standard fair on most servers for larger congestion, via auto afk disconnects and instancing in heavy populated zones (never towns).

I missed raubahn ex myself, because I was too busy leveling the new jobs at the time (rdm/sam). Also like you i planned my vacation around Endwallker (thanksgiving in US ftw). Also for me the biggest hype from the live letter was the loading screen with music of Endwalker 😀 Keep up the awesome work Quazii! I believe you've taken the cake for me as my fav ff14 content creator!

  6. Square learns from their mistakes in design, so it seems fair that we're not looking at another Raubahn EX scenario in EW since they looked at what happened in SB and avoided doing it in SHB (though there were definitely places they could have put a solo duty early on). Following the game since ARR has been watching the gradual process of Yoshi-P and team releasing features and content, keeping what works, and fixing up / removing / iterating on what didn't.

I always tell new players if something new comes out and seems like it's not fun, or too grindy, or too limited (like the original level 50 release of BLU, or the first Eureka zones when first released) to just hold off and see what happens, because they're probably not going to be abandoned and they will work to make them better.

  7. The twitch viewership will probably dip within the 1st few days of the expansion since a chunk of the player base will go internet dark, due to story spoilers. After the 1st few days, they'll see how their favourite MSQ streamer is doing. Then when savage is released, if they're not a raider themselves, then they'll start tuning into the streams of raiders. Some streamers pretty much put themselves on a 1 day delay for the MSQ so that people could still watch their stream. But of course this can be bad for the streamer because of people spamming spoilers. There was also some streamers who are interested in the MSQ, but would rush to endgame, then go back later and do the story. But this time around I've heard some of them say, they may as well just go through the MSQ the 1st time around since the savage doesn't come out until later anyway.

My personal plan is MSQ within 3 days. Then streamers when I start my gathering/crafting/alt job levelling.

  8. One of my main concerns is how Square Enix will behave in the future because we've seen this type of explosion in popularity before. During Wotlk we seen WoW boost to such popularity that it literally went to Blizzards head. You saw the result of that with later expansions. If anything Yoshi-P and crew have better sense of humility, heck the guy apologized for something that was literally out of his control, so that is one thing Activision/Blizzard does not have that Square Enix has in spades. A sense of humility. If you're actually going to admit a fault but WANT to fix it, that in itself is an example a good company. Activision/Blizzard however made mistakes and wouldn't own up to them. That tends to drive people away to other MMORPG's not just FF14. I don't foresee Square Enix becoming that bullheaded but I've seen stranger things happen.

If Activision/Blizzard wants to improve they need to address the elephant in the phone booth. Work on actual GOOD content, don't act like you're King/Queen God of the MMORPG market and actually show a residue of humility. Square Enix does that in spades, FF14 1.0 was an absolute disaster but they were willing to own up to the mistake, fix the problems and now look. Final Fantasy XIV is LITERALLY stepping on WoW's face in terms of the worlds most popular MMORPG now while WoW itself is sadly dying a very slow and horrible death. Me and many other gamers take NO pleasure in this. WoW was our go to game but if Activsion/Blizzard can't even acknowledge that they screwed up badly, then let the chips fall where they may. The genre itself has little time or patience for vanity.

  9. something to know about viewership. It will tank at launch. XIV viewers will not view people doing MSQ until they have done it themselves. So u will see a decline in viewership right at launch but it will recover right back and actually shoot up after a few weeks as people start to look for that juicy MSQ reaction content. But they want to experience it themselves first

  10. I think its interesting to look how, until basically now, there has been a massive disconnect between how popular FFXIV is on Twitch and how popular it actually is. Its been an incredibly popular game for years in terms of how many people actually play it. Twitch just never reflected that until very recently.

  11. I took a vacation that week as well. Will have a couple days beforehand to prepare and then 5 days of nothing but playing. Thank God the early access allowed me to avoid it coming out on Thanksgiving. I never would have been able to take the time off.

  12. I 100% firmly believe FFXIV's current success is nothing remotely related to luck. They ABSOLUTELY deserve the love their getting right now. Theyve worked so hard from as far back as 1.0. They were actively developing a game that were going to kill off AND working on ARR at the exact same time. To go from that utter failure point to where they are now was nothing short of a miracle fueled by relentless dedication and passion.

    -They listen to player feedback.
-They play their own game same as how their players do so they understand where the feedback comes from.
-They openly communicate whats going on, why somethings going to change, how it might affect something else, etc
-They build the game in a way to make it as player friendlly and as fun as possible. Like how games are supposed to be.
-They treat their community with care, love, and respect. They will get in on memes, create their own memes, etc. They are 100% in tune with their player base.

I could keep going on. Theres no other devs quite like them and anyone who says they only got lucky because of WoW's downfall is snorting some rockhard crystallized copium. This is 100% deserved.

  13. Hi quazii, now that you finished all extreme trials, would you give your opinions as someone that went from new player to doing ultimates on which trials you liked the most. Maybe a tier list or something. Especially as a music connoisseur what is your OST tier list?

  14. A big thing going for FF is that they keep old content very relevant through all kinds of systems. So new players don’t experience a huge gap of content like you would in WoW.

  15. You know, I’ve never played wow, but I appreciate the amount of love and positivity the wow community has brought to ff. I love some of the criticisms too. People are so focused on helping the developers by supporting them as well as being honest about what they want and it’s awesome in my eyes

  16. WoWs biggest issue, is that they create systems that adds so much friction for the players. The core base for the game, the faction war, is already a huge point of friction for players, since it effectively reduces the amount of players you have access to simply by choosing Alliancr or Horde. FFXIV, and other games, simply don't do this.

  17. People are actually sitting down and playing the game and seeing it for what it is, instead of going off "Weeb game"

It's sad really. I've been playing 1.0 beta and I've taken breaks to play WoW, but I always come back to Eorzea. It's my home.

  18. I've found that Twitch viewership is not necessarily a reliable metric for how good and well-taken care of a game actually is, hahaha. And I mean that like, as a lot of people have been saying, FFXIV has been a top tier MMO since even Heavensward and has only been improving since, yet its numbers have been comparatively low. Shadowbringers launch saw unusually high critical and user appraise, even comparing to the most popular titles, and that's when people and news outlets stopped hyper-focusing on other MMOs and games and were like wait, Square Enix is also a AAA developer and has a very popular Final Fantasy MMO?!

A lot can also be said about the stigma of JRPGs and MMOs too. SO many FF fans have been sleeping on this game because of the genre. I don't necessarily blame them because not everyone is into MMOs and it's not exactly advertised as a definitive singleplayer experience, but that is certainly what it is capable of delivering. FF and JRPG fans can be a really stubborn lot though. I've seen quite a bit of hate in the past towards XIV, saying things like "FFXIV doesn't count in the mainline series" or "We don't talk about those stupid MMOs" or "FFXIV should have been a singleplayer game and it was a mistake." I find it ironic because the FF franchise has always been a weird hodgepodge of themes and each one of their existences is pretty much completely removed from each other, whereas FFXIV is actually the most unique and also the ultimate crossroad of the series that ties everything together in the most fan service-y of ways. IMO, it's also the single best way to get into Final Fantasy as a franchise because of this. No gate into the series has ever been thrown so wide!
