After making two videos, one critical over WoW for toxicity and another for praising FFXIV for being a much more positive experience, I witnessed more negativity and toxicity this weekend than I expected that I would, despite knowing full well I would see it eventually. Between Degenerate behavior on Asmongold’s stream and poor attitudes on display in Novice Network, I’ve got a little to say about it.

Oh the burger king crowns. Sadly the loot incentives in the mentor achievements mean that there are many, many toxic mentors.
Novice network is the closest thing to a world or trade chat, too. It used to be absolutely atrocious on my server. Thankfully a lot of people decided to be the change they wanted to see in the mentor program, and on top of other reasons… The novice network is actually good now.
I try to do the mentoring without the damn BK crown. I stand in major cities and give 10k gold to non-trial sprouts.. many end up adding me to ask questions! There are so many ways to reach out and support new players! 💜
As a mentor, not all of us are helpful. Some just liek wearing the crown which is a shame. I try to help new players as much as possible and keep novice network as helpful as possible. I want this game to be welcomed to all players.
And I am on Cactuar. I got stuck on another server and it took me 30-45 minutes to get back after browsing other server auction prices. It was bad.
The novice network is very server dependent. I'm thankful that the one I participate in has been very good about helping players first, even if it's just me sometimes (I'm very big on being the change I want to see).
Though I know of a few mentors in our network who while they are trying to be helpful answer in really awful ways that come off egotistical.
Mentoring in novice network should be something approached like you are there to serve the needs of the sprouts. Even if it's something small they could have looked up on Google on their own, they just means it's an easy win to build trust with them.
They trust is so easily lost and one stupid comment from someone is enough to turn people off and makes it very hard to build that trust to again.
I think SE could assist the request situation is to prevent those kind of messages until a player signs up with the adventure's guild. Afterwards, they could add/ expand the toggle option for the kind of messages the player allows to come through.
Many mentors are the black sheep of the community. Not all mentors are toxic, but almost all toxic people are mentors. My guess is there's something in common between people that are toxic and people that like collecting and showing off trophies like the mentor crown.
It happens unfortunately but anyone who's saying it's not a minority, either do not understand how large the playerbase is or is lying. As for Asmongold it's gotten much better, his Stream today was amazing.
Comment for engagement
the Asmongold stream snipers are getting banned by GMs 🙂
When I was in the novice network everyone was very nice to me. To be fair I haven't had a bad experience in FFXIV were as I have had a lot of bad experiences with the wow community. I have been playing FFXIV since heavensward though. The toxicity some people were saying was stemming from a large number of older players who tried to bar asmons and his fans way into the game bc "They are toxic" So essentially be toxic to the toxic people and they wont play FFXIV anymore. It's funny that this just rooted out the toxic parts of the FFXIV community and asmon is still playing. If you see people being toxic please report them, SE will not stand for that everyone hindering asmons progress in an aggressive way was banned for 7-9 days. If they are being toxic in game they should be reported and banned as well.
Unfortunately, everyone knows that the worst players have a sign besides their name, and it's a Mentor crown.
Wait what? Our Cerberus Novice Network is not toxic (I know we have few… yeah nuts). But I think that depends on the Server. I think you should say depends on your server NN. More 'cause I am 1.0 player and Mentor since HW when was created. An sometimes even been FC leader of one of old Cerburs Free Company tell me not to help so much but guess what don't care 😉
you got like, sub 1000 subscribers and even less viewers of course people aren't subscribed chill.
And yea I've faced a lot of toxicity in my 5 years of playing enough that I've quit multiple times and honestly playing around xiv players gives me anxity. Most people don't even believe me cause "Everyone who plays xiv is a harmless cherub" I'd probably want to go play wow to feel safer then trust any of ya'll I got storied for days of the trouble and trauma from around this game
Those peiple behaviour it was a shame to us all, FFXIV got known by having one of the most welcoming and friendly Online Community out there over years building such reputation ( and it is indeed, even with some Toxic players like anywhere else ), but those people on Asmongold Live and Social Media like that Furry Guy heavily Damaged FFXIV envoirment. Some people was worried about "Toxic Players coming to FFXIV due Asmongold Lives" and in the end it was FFXIV Community itself that had one of the most disgusting behaviour i ever seen.
About Mentors and Novice Network there's 2 places where you can easily find Toxic people playing FFXIV, 1: Extreme/Savage content on Party Finder, 2: Novice Network. That place it's worse than Chernobyl itself.
Mentors in other hand it's a broken concept, the only way that SQEX have to fix Mentor System it's to make harder ( WAY, WAY HARDER ) to obtain such title. Right now people gets constantly encouraged by other players to: "Hey, become Mentor by Crafting, it's fast and easy, so you can stay here with us using the Novice Network and/or you can have this cute little crown on your name".
For that stupid reason most of Mentors don't know a thing about the game, like, over 90% of them. They don't help anybody with their questions ( they mostly don't even know the answer to begin with ), they are toxic and things keeps worse and worse to list about.
To me, Mentor Requirements should be:
– PVE Mentor: All Extreme and Savages Cleared on Min Ilv/Echo Silenced just like Blue Mage Achievement, +3000 Dungeons, +5000 Commendations, all Jobs at Lv80… That way a Battle Mentor would at least have knowledge, played and cleared some relevant stuff to become a "PVE Mentor".
– Craft Mentor: All Craft/Gathering Jobs at Lv80, 90% Crafting Log for all Jobs Done, 100% Gathering Log Done, 75% Fishing Log Done, +5000 Collectables, +10000 Systhesis done, +10000 Nodes Collected, All Master Recipe and Folkore.
Maybe that way the Mentor System would work better, with players that actually did and know the content at least, not people who rush a pretty easy Achievement to obtain not to use the System how it would supposed to be, but to have a Channel Access or a Cute Crown with it.
My experience with being a new player was a little different. The complete silent treatment in Dungeons was off putting. Everyone says "Hi" and then its a mad dash to end of dungeon and during some cut scenes the other players just skipped and started fighting so when I finally finished my cinematic the fight was already started, of course I was DPS at the time(I know some are locked). I even tried asking about unexplored part of dungeon but I was ignored. I have been playing WoW since 2007 and other MMO's as well but this was the first time I could remember where you were ignored in dungeons. After leveling four different toons (old habit about the name of the toon and its class) to 80 and then each of them having one other 80 level job, usually the one I started with, I just learned that FFXIV is only a "Community" in General Chat; usually in Limsa and Gridania showing off their transmog or mount etc.. I got invited to FC's and basically I learned that FC's is just another channel to get ignored in, half the people where on other servers and they have a well established clique. In my personal experience; FFXIV is only a community for narcissist and keyboard warriors and it is very sad to see. I stopped playing when I finished "Shadowbringer", but maybe I will play again in "Endwalker" just to finish out my characters story. Beautiful and yet a very lonely game for new players who is not part of "The Clique".
I don't think it will last. Asmongold/Zach gave such a fair, kind, generous review of the game and has taken it seriously, and most of the worst griefers got suspended. You can always report the people in Novice chat if they are being abusive to a Sprout, especially IN the Novice chat. A lot of people get the Mentor tile for status and nothing else.
People say Asmon looked much happier after playing FF14
Btw Onion,
Sorry for my misunderstanding in your other video(and what l said). I forgot that you have many who respond to you and it can get overwhelming.
The other guy suggested you ignore comments, but I pray you DONT do listen to him, because I appreciate that you interact with your subscribers, its why i sub'd to your channel. unlike other tubers who ignore.
anyway, keep up the good work! your videos are interesting
Hope to see more of your potato knight
I don’t think people don’t like him because he trashed the game. It’s mostly because (merited or not) for a lot of people his community represents the toxic chud attitude that has plagued wow for a long time. I personally don’t have anything against him, but i’ve came across more toxic people in the last month than ever before on FFXIV, so the fears might’ve been warranted it seems…
Thats why i quit the game after reaching level 23, because not only the leveling is boring, but the people who REPRESENT the Mentors are bad, and you cant ask them stuff normally without being shit on. I was trying to raise the topic in steam discussions and got bombarded by people saying you are overreacting, i dont know why people blindly defend everything about the game.
This will just make new people either quit or buy boosts and ruin your endgame, and its your community minority fault, because no one gives a damn. And by just closing your eyes on it, the problem wont solve and popularity of the game will return to previous state, not that it was bad, but i think still it will be less then now.
What's wrong with NA mentors giving shit to all newbies? The view of NA mentorship is even affecting JP servers when nothing even happens in novice chat. How shitty can you mentors fuck shit up?
Dear people, if you see mentor being a fucker, report. They will get their mentorship stripped and let their mentor roulette gone to shitdump. Dont tolerate toxic mentor. SE take toxic mentor issue seriously. The fact that this thing still happen means you guys dont do jackshit. This is not Blizzard.
REPORT!!!
Honestly, just taking one look at the forums should be enough to show how Toxic people have came from their holes.
I was in a fc and was my first. Turns out it was toxic as hell the officer treat me like crap and bullied me kicked me out saying I was harassing other people and told me to stop. Which was never true they didn’t let me hear my side of the story. So later on I got a invitation to the wedding I found one of the officers hated me wanted to make me miserable. All the side I’m not mention any names or people protecting their identity. They also claim to be a friendly free toxic place
If it contains Humans then it contains toxicity. one of the reasons i quit paying and playing ff14, I could not find a nice f.c and when I thought I finally did, they turned out to just be assholes. which sucks because it is honestly an awesome game.
Don't people more regularly get banned for being over negative on ffxiv? i've been playing for about a month now and everyone's been friendly on the server i play on.
Good thing is once the raid Is over you never have to see the toxic person again.
TBH anyone who gets THAT obsessed with a streamer, almost deifying them, is sad.
And following that person around in-game is even sadder.
I had a healer refusing to heal me because I didn't use certain positionals because I play as a monk people like them it's not nice 😒😒
I personally hate asmongold but I think that it's ridiculous that people couldn't get help or even truly get into the game just because they played wow and may or may not be a fan of asmon that type of gatekeeping stuff is what I'm not cool with
Got to admit, "muh freeze peach" is a new one to me. I've been gaming online since I was 15. I'm currently 40. I've never once heard a troll try and use that particular excuse.
FF14 community lives so much on rainbow bridge that they don't know what is "toxic" unless you actually show the difference between both as because i have heard someone calling someone "toxic" because he skips the story cutscenes so yeah
I don't remember XIV being this toxic before the waves of WoW refugees. I might have had 1-2 toxic interactions in two years. But things got really worse. They just want to rush everything to the point that it's affecting my enjoyment of the game. I left WoW because of how toxic it was. It makes me sad to see XIV becoming toxic because these new players are impatient and rude.
I'm SUPER chill and have the thickest skin ever and as such I like to teach people when possible. However there are a lot of toxic people who either attack you when you try to help/teach them or flat out ignore you. I just pick up the slack and get the content done, write down that persons name and avoid them in the future. Being bad at the game is completely fine but when someone is genuinely tries to help you and you attack them that's sus as fuck. I only a few times in my entire 9yrs playing this game cracked and was toxic to toxic players. I would troll shit talkers sometimes but I never verbally attacked them or belittled their play style etc. I would just stand in aoes, not heal, or pretend my raise button didn't work after I would let myself die. There are some SUPER toxic people on this game and its to be expected. Tolerated? No. Expected? Yes. If your naive enough to think these kinds of people will fade away or don't exist I'll pray for your soul. You'll never get rid of them its best to just avoid them.
I've never seen any toxic situation in the novice network on my server but maybe it's different depending on the server
If you saying Ff14 is toxic then you sir are SUPER SOFT. ITS snowflakes like you who have ruined this game.
Players act passive aggressive and act rude with their actions.
If someone calls them out for it, they turn the leaf and say they are the victim.
It's literally the most childish and toxic community I've seen.
Like I am genuinely disgusted with 14.
I don't like Asmongold.. but seriously grow up people! Just ignore him, don't follow people around and harassing them. No wonder he hates the community
I remember my reaction to Asmongold playing was "Who the fucks Asmongold" :') Legit had never heard of the dude, so he starts playing and i continue doing my own thing, a dude playing a video game? stop the presses!. I like the game and he doesn't? Oh no! Anyways….
