Thoughts on Masayoshi Soken's Speech at the Final Fantasy 14 Fanfest, and Why It Matters for FF16

During the Final Fantasy 14 fanfest, composer Masayoshi Soken revealed that he had been battling with cancer since last year. Unbeknownst to his co-workers, Soken was undergoing chemotherapy during these months, which he found “mentally as well as physically tough”, but was also writing music for Shadowbringers during this time, including the climactic song “To the Edge”. Soken’s doctors had cleared him to attend the Fan Festival, as the cancer is now in remission.

  1. Soken and Yoshida's speech gave me goose bumps. I don't play FF14 but I still listen to his music. I really hope he will do the music for FF16 too, but health comes first.

  2. The music in the FFXVI trailer is filled to the brim with stylistic nuances that are trademarks of Soken-san's compositional style. It's safe to assume that he is one, if not the only composer for FFXVI.

  3. You singlehandedly skyrocket my hype for FF16. I cannot wait to be able to play this beautiful piece of art. I love what u have to say abt FF games and gaming in general. You’ve done well, keep up the good work 👍

  4. It still sadden to see many Final Fantasy fans still ignore FF14 simply because it is labeled as MMO. Perhaps when fans play FF16 and learns that the same devs were behind FF14, we may get more players to try. In my opinion, FF14 is a perfect game for FF fans more than ex-WoW refugees because references made in FF14 are much more appreciated for the fans.
