I think it's because of a few things. It's not your fault, Eorzean archives or any other channels that's done lore videos.
Biggest reason in my eyes that so few watch it is spoilers. And depending on lore it might be weeks before they watch it. The second thing is that the story is pretty direct, it tells you enough not leaving you wanting for all that much.
I bet lore videos for FFXVI, Star Ocean 6 and KH4 would be more successful.
There’s Synodic Scribe, The Eorzean Archive…. And the Chronicler of Lore
You are spot on with saying people prefer the social element. People do like to interact with story content, but it's mostly in the form of reactions. I believe this is cos watching someone's first time thro the story allows them to sorta re-live their first time through, and they can relate to people when they get super emotional in one of XIV's myriad powerful cutscenes. That's just what people find more appealing in this community as a whole.
Personally, I'm not too worried about the popularity of story based content. I simply enjoy discussions about the story with people and so I do it, regardless of how much traction I get. But that could also be cos youtube is a hobby for me. I realize it could be different for someone who has made a career out of it.
I am happy you put this out there, Sync. I have wanted to get back into content-creating myself, but whenever I find a topic that I have both the time and energy to research, I always end up wondering if it would be worth it, because if it is not gil-based, very few people would want to enjoy it. And, to be fair, I'd happily make them for the handful of people that'd enjoy them, but… Well, time is a rarity these days, so I often end up in decision paralysis trying to guess what might then be most relevant of the lore to THAT handful of people.
I am very happy with most of the videos I have done, and I have done them mostly for my own amusement anyways, but like you say, it is hard not to be swayed by 'but what will people actually sit down and watch?!'-line of thought, and lore simply isn't that. Like some said below, it is in part due to fear of spoilers, and the game has been more and more concise in giving us the full story, give or take, from Shadowbringers onwards. I love that development, but it leaves less Edda stories to piece together.
The lorebooks have SO many great nuggets of lore, however, that are NOT in the game, and are relevant to some players who love the story, or the details, or the roleplaying aspects of things. But I think it just isn't as sellable as so many other things. Meme-y things. That said, I hope I'll be able to convince/bully you back into making more lore videos, every once in a while at least. 🙂 Stars know I have watched them all.
as i told u i think the lack of lore channels is because people like more silly and memey content because the most population is casual players, that is ok but we are missing a huge part of the game the story, many people also just want to rush it and get to endgame, and tha is fine ok, but we do have people interested on the lore like me, i like to know everything like u mentioned the dusk vigil story is super sad but super interesting and people just ignore the pieces of paper on the floor because they just want to get done with the dungeon, sadly that the truth
i did livestreamed me trying to get to the top of kugane tower for 8 hrs, only to give up rage and trow my controller on the wall
Much of the lore of FFXIV is well told. Assuming you pay attention you can understand everything (or think you understood everything), hence making you less prone to seeking info out. WoW on the other hand is the complete opposite. The way they convey lore is shit, hence creating the need to have people who explain lore.
Vaati's channel for instance has value, simply because understanding Souls lore is so difficult.
Edit: One way to get me personally interested into lore would be delving into realms of the speculative, something like Game Theory just for FF14, maybe with a more serious tone. Explaining existing lore is just retreading beaten ground and holds no value for me.
I watch Synodic Scribe, The Eorzean Archive, Wyrm Limion, Lore Lines and Stout Helm pretty regulary. Pretty much whenever they upload interesting things. ^-^
I wouldn't mind more but I feel like Lore content has grown lately! c: I would love to see more Lore from you, but no pressure if you feel like its not worth it I understand!
Do what you feel like is best for you. c: Meme content is way more popular of course and I think Ethys moved on entirely from XIV not just Lore. I'm glad others fill the void he left behind. :3
Lore is a nieche thing compared to casual meme thingies and will always be defined by being a smaller part of the entire audience I thiink. The channels I listed also have very different styles of showcasing Lore, some more interesting than others of course. I still love all of them for it haha.
But do what you feel is best for you, if you're more happy with your content people notice and stick with you! Personally drama turns me off because every Final Fantasy creator talks about it and having the same topic on like 5 channels bores me haha. I also avoid too much negativity if it just repeats over and over. s: But I don't really comment on it either, I rather ignore those videos and come back for other more interesting things! I just don't get involved when something is not for me. So I don't usually watch everything of every creator anyway- but I am subscribed to almost everyone haha. Also I don't show interest in the same things every day, so it's a bit random too wether I watch Zepla or Scribe, depends entirely on mood and time I guess. c: But that's just my personal view anyway!
Eh memes are fine but it gets to be too much. Your voice is fine for informative content. Straight to the point. In the end look to yourself for what you are going to do and aim to be better than what you were yesterday.
I was literally just thinking this myself last night.
Man for me it's not even lore. It's like FFXIV has so many interesting themes and ideas being explored in it's story and no one really talks about them especially not on YT. Where's my hour long video essay about the pervasive theme of grief and loss in ShB and how a refusal or inability to process and move on from grief can be harmful not only to yourself but also the people around you. Or how destructive ethnonationalism is even to the people who adhere to it. Or maybe an analysis about where FFXIV may fail to explore certain heavy ideas, doesn't have to be completely positive, there's some thought-provoking critique to be had.
This game is ripe for literary analysis and no one seems to want to do it.
I've seen some like around 10k sub lore channels, they do other stuff too but a lot of lore, such as Stout Helm, Wyrm Liomion, Eorzean Archons do story recaps too and one of them is a woman which i always like to see more in the sorta hostile youtube landscape. Now i admit i'm more interested into the lore than the average viewers, I mean i've watched most bloodborne videos by sinclair lore, the whole bloodborne lets talk lore from aegon of astora etc.
But yeah, there are lore channels out there but i wish there was more i agree
Lore channels definitely exist, but nobody watches them. And thanks to the youtube algorithm they don't grow as well because of the fact that people will put off watching a video till their done with a specific patch.
I think you already hit on a lot of the points which make it so that your videos don't get a lot of views. If you are trying to make a living at youtube, I completely understand why this would not be a desirable outcome.
It's also hard to talk about a lot of things in 14 without "spoiling" something for someone. So, it is a niche audience. I personally only just started watching your videos (I think it was on Mi'qote). Don't think though, that they have not been appreciated. 🙂
Feel free to walk onto new content that will suit you and your audience better, but know that I'm not alone in enjoying what you've already given the community. I will also be recommending your videos to friends I have playing the game – especially if there's a piece of lore they find confusing which you've already breached the topic of.
