  1. I appreciate the story groundwork that ARR sets, the foundation for the rest of the expansions. I still, having caught up to current content, feel more at home in the ARR zones that I walked flat on foot for hours on end. I started off and spent the whole of ARR as a conjurer/white mage, and I actually would get anxious about how fast I was levelling because I knew the next time I jumped into a roulette it would be something challenging where I might not succeed in keeping everyone perfectly alive, worrying that I had no idea what the last three abilities I got even did because there was no dungeon to test them out in before I was levelling up again. It was a little nerve wrecking, but ultimately, it's part of my FFXIV experience, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I love how the story streamlines in later expansions, how aware they are that they are making their hero play courier, but the justification behind it all makes a bit more sense, or ties into things neater, or just wraps up with a lot less repetition. I've levelled up few alts in ARR recently, and honestly, if you skip scenes (because you've played them before) it takes so little time. With your knowledge of the systems, and eating your eggs before battle, and knowing the fights before hand, first credits turn up pretty fast. I've just not got the soulenergy to try to get my alts to second credits ARR. They can be overpowered and never learn to fly, I just want to buy more FC apartments anyway.

Sorry for the wall of text. Thank you for another great video.

  2. I don't think ARR was bad at all. It was good world building, and for something made 10 years ago I'd consider it good. And no I didn't have any friends to play through with. And no I don't have rose-tinted glasses either because I only started this game when Shadowbringers launched, so it wasn't that long ago that I did all the old msq.

I really dislike it when people tell new players "Oh ya ARR sucks and you WILL hate it, but it's okay just get through it." because ARR being bad is just peoples' opinion. It's not fact, not everyone will guaranteed hate it. But when you tell a new person that they will hate it, then it gives them negative preconceived notions and makes them doubt if they should even keep playing. When in reality if they just kept playing and didn't have someone tell them that, they'd probably have a good chance of liking it or at least not minding the slow parts.

I think a lot of people are impatient these days, and are used to how most mmos treat leveling as a chore and how the devs usually make leveling this nothing burger that takes very little time and doesn't give new players time to properly learn the game or build attachment to it at all. One of the reasons I like the game is because leveling is an actual journey like it used to be in other mmos. And no, I wouldn't want to play it again either, but I don't have to because there's very little reason to make more than one character.

I didn't mind the quests much because I was constantly engaged in the story. I think a lot of people fall into this trap of treating the game like other mmos and they just skip any conversation text and take the quests. And if you do that then ya it feels like a chore. Because you're ignoring the context and are just focused on what the task is. People say the same thing about having to run around and talk to people for quests, but I didn't really mind because I was paying attention to what was happening and traveling is pretty easy with teleports.

No, it's not challenging, but that's intentional. The game is designed to be as friendly as possible to new players and people new to mmos in general. Those people already have a hard enough time with how much there is to learn as it is. You yourself said you've been nervous doing things for the first time. That's why. The leveling content is the basic learning content, but even that gets harder as you get into expansions, as you yourself also said.

The devs already went through and changed quite a bit about ARR back during Shadowbringers. And with the current expansion they've also added duty support and they nearly completely redid the the praetorium and the castrum before it to be much more like the modern design. They also made a number of changes to old dungeons. They completely remade one of the early dungeons.

  3. I started the game as thaumaturge/black mage and still enjoyed ARR, and this was before they cut down on the quests. The only part I really had to power through was the Seventh Astral Era patches between ARR and Heavensward.

  4. The TL; DR version for those that find reading difficult = ARR isn't bad. It's just unfairly viewed as "bad" by the newer wave of players comparing it against the expansions they've heard about from their friends. Simply put, the problem is expectations and willingness to engage in regards to these newer players.

ARR is not bad. You seem to be a part of that newer wave of the players that hopped on the Shadowbringers bandwagon. Needless to say, chances are you heard your peers telling you how good the story gets at (insert whatever point here) vs. saying the game as a whole is good. Rather than starting out as fresh as possible, you went into the game viewing the base game as a "thing to get through" in order to get to whatever the good part your peers mentioned vs. simply playing it an trying to FULLY engage in it, which leads me to my final point.

Through the entire video you complained about WHAT you're doing and not once mentioned WHY you are doing it. This combined with how you seem to criticize "pacing" purely in regards to gameplay, lead me to believe that you aren't focused on the story, world building, and other non combat aspects at all. Mind you, this is fine. However, it comes across as disingenuous when you make that claim that this portion of the game is bad even though you clearly aren't judging it as a whole.

Speaking of judging, the main problem with this newer wave of players with the "ARR is bad" takes always compare the BASE game to the expansions (usually the latest one). This is in conjuction with the fact that you prioritize gameplay and mechanics over everything non combat related. If you've got your thinking cap on, I'm sure you've realized the issue here. You are quite literally comparing your early level self WITHOUT a job stones to yourself in expansions WITH job stones, so OF COURSE things are going to be more flashy later on.

  5. Uncharted fun times!

But yeah before all the changes to ARR it kinda was a chore now they made it less and cut a lot of the fat people was complaining for a legit reason hence why they actually changed it.

  6. you have no idea how surprised i was seeing the ending when i also stopped playing THAT pile of garbage after 9 years for FFXIV, it's such a huge difference when the devs actually care about making a good game that everyone can enjoy instead of thinking of ways to make boobs bigger to milk the last cent out of the playerbase.
