I bought a 5950x at launch.
i went from a 5900x to a 5800x3d…. My 3 primary programs all benefited quite a bit since they are all CPU bottlenecked. I thought about switching to 7000 series but I really don't want to take my computer apart right now and there aren't any motherboards out yet, that aren't $1k, that I'm excited about. Overall it cost me about $50 and I definitely notice a difference in MSFS frames and lows in COD are better. Lightroom is the only other program I really use and it is a wash with the 5900x. The big factor in all this, is I'm done spending time looking, for now. That alone is worth the $50
Oh, Indeed, your suggestion makes perfect sense! The gentleman already has a 5800X which is still quite viable; however, purchasing another AM4 processor at the cost of ~$300 would be a waste of financial resources. Moreover, the AM4 platform is rapidly being overshadowed by the new AM5 socket. Quite true, if one wishes to upgrade, do it to the next level where performance enhancement will be notable.
I play FFXIV and it does not need much oomph to max out. The 5800x is more than enough and if you have the money put it into a GPU, unless you already have a top end GPU but don't expect miracles. Or a monitor never underestimate the benefits of a good screen so you don't waste all the PC tech you have behind it.
Daft as it is I did swap my own 5800x to a 5800x3d (the 5800x is in another PC now with a 3080). I did the upgrade because I got a 4090 GPU and play modern demanding games but wanted to wait for AM5 to bed-in, and the 5800x3d came up on a good price/offer when I got it.
The main improvement over the 5800x was smoothness rather than top end FPS. The improvement is best in crowded areas where the CPU tends to get hit on harder.
Heck, I even play FFXIV when at my parents on a laptop with a 12500H CPU and a 3070 in a Thunderbolt eGPU case and that maxes FFXIV out.
Yeah i understand what you talking about back in 2020 i had i5 4460 and i almost upgraded to i7 4790k but instead i bought new motherboadd cpu and ram (i7 9700kf and man i was blown away by the speed difference
Wow so glad I watched the entire video. You really confused me with the title there Tech!! I thought this was going to be about What is better for Final Fantasy… the 5800X or 5800X3D…. not whether having a current 5800X if its worth upgrading to the X3D or not haha…. cheers my friend…
Why the AMD R9 5800X3D = same price as = 5900X3D?
8 vs 12 Cores?
I wanted to upgrade my I7 9700F to r7 5700X this January. Sadly 5700X was at 180€ back then.. then I found used 5900X + used b450 for 300€ (240+60). Now I can really say, I'm really happy I didn't buy 5700X + new B550 (also 300€ in total) but went for used parts. Now I own 12cores/24threads over older 8cores/8threads. There is maybe ~30% bump in raw performance but difference in multitasking is now day and nigh. RTX3070, 32GBDDR4. Primary monitor 1440p, secondary 1080p.
This is video what i need
I have a R5 5600x was thinking to upgrading to R9 5900x. I have a 5700xt for my gpu. Should I just save money for the new platform ? I know future games are going to want more cores than 6 for requirements as well.
I went from a 5700G to a 5800X due to graphic card prices being crazy when I purchased the former. I sold the G for nearly the purchase price of the X. The 5800X is the last upgrade for my AM4 platform. Furthermore, I agree with Tech here. There will be virtually no speed bump.
Can you make a motherboard video? Bc there's too many Z790/Z690 boards. Like Is a ddr4 board worth it, is thunderbolt worth it and does size matter etc. I just got a 13900k and a 4090 but cant decide on the motherboard. Asus creator z790 is something I'm looking at, but asus z790 itx is a nice option or get a good ddr4 board for half the price but no thunderbolt. I play warzone 2.0 and using blender for work. 4k 144hz monitor

It is a good build?
I really happy with my am4 platform still OG MB started 1600x to 2700x and now 5700x is a major upgrade 2700x to 5700x omg couldn't believe it! What is a 2700x with rgb cooler new worth now 🤔 wanna sell the 2700x. I felt every upgrade to the pc
The difference is so tiny just save the money and get a better graphics card.
Oh dear lord😂 that hit me.
ff14 is a weird game cpu wise……..That game can bottle neck cpus and really intel cpus will get you more frames in that game because it doesn't like amd cpus……..The engine is really old and full of patched code a cpu upgrade means a lot in that game
X means extra $ on ryzen. K means extra cash on intel.
Using 2 years am4 and probably will be using it for another 5 years at least. Playing some games and feel satisfied with what I got. Upgraded from 1600af to 5600 and the difference in the games that I play was huge. If 5800x3d was like half the price when I bought 5600, I would probably go for it but upgrading from 5600 to anything higher unless it is for free seems pointless to me. Yes 5800x3d is very good cpu unit but consider buying it with an aftermarket cooler for at least 50 euros so this makes it 2.5x or more expensive than 5600 and it is not as much more powerful than 5600. Now if you also have first or second gen am4 cpu and a motherboard which can handle 5800x3d, if it comes with the right price and it is paired with the right GPU + PSU than it could be worth it.
This is making me miss FF14 1440p. That is too similar. My friend, Helped him put together his 5800X years ago for WoW, he's happy as a clam for 1080p, upgraded the gpu after the market adjusted. No, Think 5800X= 12th gen Intel. My friend with 10900k only got with 3090 because that was the newest prebuilt at the time (and he wanted a 3090). We are also getting close to 7600-7700(X) pricing on the low end for a new gaming pc on AM5. I think the desire here is just wanting FF14 smoother but it has to be a worthwhile upgrade. Settings can be dialed down for dungeon/raid/open world in FF14, though it will look less pretty. I've actually thought about testing once I do another cpu upgrade in FF14 seeing if that stone dungeon and praetorium run smoother. WoW was running better than 14 on my system so I ended up going back. My friend with that 10900k 3090 used to raid in both games and would agree with if upgrading making the performance worth it. He also plays CoD and a bunch of other games but raiding at 1440p UW is/was smooth for him. Here, The 5800X3D likely didn't exist yet when the 5800X was built. When it gets cheaper 7800X3D might also be a good candidate. A new 5800X3D likely isn't worth it, the 5800X won't be worth as much used, probably best to put into 7800X3D rig, save up for that to replace 5800X or next gen 8 core on AM5 or similar. The only place I found FF14 should have settings turned down were dungeon/raid to try to stay 100+ fps or whatever felt smooth. Tons of settings options though to play with, Stopped FF14 in ARR a couple years back but with the right settings it didn't have any issues, if I moved it up too high it could choke in dungeon/raid a bit. Maybe a cpu and gpu upgrade on a current platform, midrange would just be better though, while it's still likely more cpu dependant the gpu was decently used as well with all the special effects in 14.
What about a 3600 to 5800x3d? For Roblox 😊
When I built my system I intended to start with a 12100/stock cooler and swap it out for a 12600k/aio. Ended up starting with a 12400 and swapped that out for 13700k. 16 core gang 🤠
if you play 1080p with a 4090, you are not cpu bound. Your are screen bound.
So at this point I've used a few of the more modern CPUs and I've found that in windows a 5900x is faster than the 13900 but in games it gets destroyed, is this because windows is mostly ran on the Ecores that are slower than the 5900x's regular cores?
mr tech , how long do you a 5800x 32GB 4000mhz cl14 on a x570 tuf paired with a 6950xt will last me playing a 2160p ? i have been playing the backlog of games on my steam/epic library. also the PC is used to browse the internet. chrome is opened with about 30 tabs. the games coming out this year dont really interest me , maybe Lies Of P and Hellblade 2 is coming next year. the games i have in the libraries are about 1-3 years old. also i would like to do a GPU waterloop, i found the GPU block for the model. ran the numbers and it will cost about $600 for everything. would it be worth it or does it comes down a personal choice. i think ill be having this card for a while also i dont want to buy another GPU till i can play Control at 4k and more than 60fps natively. i went from a 5700xt to a 6950xt and i really see the improvement.
Hi Tech,
Would you upgrade from a 7700X to 7950X3D?
I have an Asus TUF B650-Plus motherboard, 64GB 6000 memory and an RTX4090. Playing at 4k.
I am planning also to convert hundreds of family videos and improve their quality by AI.
Appreciate your answer. Thank you!
Man, that's such a new chip! I'd stay with the 5800x and skip the 7000 generation if not the 8000 as well.
Exactly Feel The Same. When i went From A 1700x to 5900x i got that wow moment.
Upgraded FX6300/1650 Super/21Gb DDR3/HHD PC to a 5600G/6600XT/16Gb DDR4/SSD System in December after finding a Killer Bundled Deal on the CPU/Motherboard/RAM Combo… Was a Great Improvement over the FX Set Up I had, but Accidently found a 5800X3D Sale for Under $300 in March, so I got that to Replace the 5600G, the Improvement to the 5600G was Good, but not Great… The MoBo that came with the 5600G was an ASUS Prime, it was already Flashed for the 5600G, but didn't FEEL like an Improvement when the BIOS was Updated and the 5800X3D went in and I found a replacement MoBo for the Prime with an X570S Edge WiFi for $150 and 32Gb DDR4, I also added another 2 Tb NVMe to the Edge for 3Tb's Total in NVMe Drives…
The Final Upgrade was to an XFX 6800XT from the 6600XT, that was last month, got that for just under $500 at the Time when you Included the Game Cost it came with, this FINALLY has the PC Feeling like a Complete Upgrade… My Issue was mostly that I use my 65" TV in the Livingroom, and I run my Games in Windowed Mode not Full Screen so it would Constantly Default to a 4K'ish Resolution and the 5600G and 6600XT Combo just couldn't do that and Consistently Hovered around 50fps avg on a Best Case, if I could get the Games to settle in at about 1440p type resolution, it was Better, it just took some Wrangling to get the Games to Play Nice… The 6600XT was Better with the 5800X3D Installed, but still didn't like being in Windowed Mode and the 6800XT certainly did the Trick at Fixing that, now it sits about 130fps on Ultra Settings at 4K, Some Games even More… If I Drop Down to 1440p, it Jumps upwards of 200fps+, and at 1080p, it just goes thru the Roof.. Since my TV runs at 120hz Refresh, I just keep everything at 4K and stay at my refresh rate roughly….
That Upgrade has since become 2 Complete PC's from the FX6300, I just need to put the other Back Together again… The Plan is to use the 5600G Set Up as an HTPC in a SFF Build, the 6600XT I may or May NOT Use since I also STILL have the FX6300 Parts and may just Rebuild that as well, and slap the 6600XT in place of the 1650 Super… I just don't know if the 5600G will be enough for Streaming and Video Playback on it's Own at 4K, if Not, I still have the 6600XT to fall Back On and the 1650 can stay with the FX6300…
Who Knew being Nosey would turn into 3 Complete and Functional PC's, only reason the FX got Upgraded in the First Place, the Deal on the 5600G Bundle…. I didn't have the Money to Drop on a 7K Series Build, and all these Upgrades were Over essentially a 6 Month Period of Time or so…. With the Prices for a 7K Series Build coming Down to a more Reasonable Level, eventually I'll Upgrade to the Newest Platform, but right now I'm MORE than Happy with this… I'm just Nosey, and still want to see what the Latest Generation has to Offer from the Driver's Seat Perspective, not just a Review Perspective… Who Knows, this Build is AMD, Next One could even be an Intel, depends on where the Prices Settle when I get to that Point….
Thanks for answering my question! I have a 3070 and play at 1440p, sorry about not including that info. I didnt take this as mocking, I get it! Doing my own research on this before, there wasn’t a lot of people talking about the 3d cache with mmo’s. So it’s hard to make a good decision with hardly any info. But I will be rocking the 5800x for a good while. Thanks again!
Definitely agree with Tech here. I absolutely hate incremental upgrades. It's a waste of time and money.
A wise man told me aint broke dont upgrade at all.
never upgrade within the same generation unless you're getting way more cores at a good deal
I actually upgraded from a Ryzen 7 5800X to a i9-13900K a couple of months ago. Now that's an upgrade!
He did not mention his storage either. Going to a M.2 would also be an uplift. I suggest to gamer friends they look at 16g GPUs which means AMD at this point. Sure, 8-10-12g GPUs will play games at 1080P at low textures today, but why spend $400+ on effectively an obsolete GPU?
what is techs thoughts on the 5600X3D??
There are some other comments from those that play this game as well, but my thoughts are that you're only going to get considerable gains in high player density scenarios.
Balmung Quicksands
Large scale hunting
AFKing in Limsa
If your content choice in the game mostly caps at the 24 player Alliance content there isn't really anything to be gained.
Whether or not those scenarios are worth the price difference in selling the 5800x is up to you to decide.
I'm a Flight Simulator guy.
The 5800X to 5800X3D upgrade was really worth to me.
Huge performance boost.
i went from a 9900k to 7800x3d and dam, this new chip is fast and efficient. Then sold the 9900k for more than i paid for it 3 years later, great deal. Still have a 9700f pc to do all my file handling. Happy days. I know you have a 9900k Tech, i would be selling that bad boy or not.. up to you.
FF14 is not really that hard of a game to run. As long as you have a really good video card and a good CPU for it so like a 3700x and 6700xt that I have. I can run the game at 1440p and get close to and sometimes over 144hz depending on the area and how many people. Even then you can still get great FPS.
It's a 10 year old game at this point. Even in 25 man raids it's not hard to run. You can run it on a Ryzen 5 5600x or even a Ryzen 5 3600x. The game is made to run on a PlayStation 4 and 5 and before that PlayStation 3.
Also when there is a game that comes out to the PC that I'm ready to play and need to do a massive upgrade CPU wise I will may even go Intel. Until then I'm good with my 3700x, 6700xt, and 32gigs of ram at 3600mhz and I have to 1440p monitors going.
Its so true, never do incremental upgrade. 6 core to 3 gen newer 8 core is the minimum i would say. Gpu every other gen is the minimum for me. If your an enthusiast, sure go ahead and upgrade everytime, its what you enjoy. But for the normies like me, it should be 3-4 years minimum before the next upgrade.
Upgraded from 2600 to 5700x with the same board. Im just thinking of waiting for 15th gen intel and the 5700x, as cheap as it is, is worth the “in between” upgrade.
Hie Mr Byte where do ask ?
That ROG laptop looks amazing
