The Basics to Modding in Final Fantasy XIV

There aren’t that many guides out there regarding modding in this game, so I thought it would be a good idea to make a video for those who are curious on how to get into it. Unfortunately, I’m not able to redo the entire Mare Lamentorum process to show it visually, but I hope my commentary and some of the footage on-screen helps with this little hurdle. Thank you so much for watching, take care of yourselves, and stay safe!

  1. Hello! This is my first time making a guide, please no flame! But I hope this video helps you get the basics behind the big beast that is "Modding in FFXIV". If there is anything I missed or have been mistaken with, please share it down in the comments below!

  2. Thanks Sam, as a player that has many friends that have been using these for years i finally get a glimpse at their own world, lets just hope that Square dont come after you, since they did nuke oohboy´s MOD BEASTS video 🙁

(mods made you like FF14 more, so i can see this video as a quick guide to help others too!)

  3. I'm glad you made a guide like this! I have a friend that just returned to ff after being gone for at least a year and he wants to get into modding too to make his desire to play the game stronger

  4. A quick reminder from a veteran in the modding scene

Penumbra is not a requirement to mod (same goes for Mare) if it’s too complex or annoying to set up

If you just use Textool it works perfectly fine as well but it has its limits with how much you can do (mainly just being limited to mod multiple characters of the same race with different mods)
It also has the benefit of being fully on your side only

It also has the benefit of working the moment a new patch drops , compared to some other modding tools that require time to update to the latest patch

But this is just me giving advice from my own experience being a veteran in the scene and giving more options

Of which many in the comments don’t seem to get or care to understand

  5. Just my opinion here, based on my own experiences as someone who played the game since Stormblood and also used mods in the past:

I genuinely wish SE would just pull the plug on modding completely (somehow).
I enjoy the spicy gposes on x like the next guy and some mods feel like they are necessary since SE won't fix the obvious flaws the game has, I get that.

But having conversations about anything in the game with others playing this game and modding ALWAYS coming up in some way is just plain annoying to me.
Yeah, cool that some mod fixes some issue/makes sth be or look better. And things like chat boxes (now in the game) and noclippy for raiding should just be in the game.

But it shouldn't be lowkey expected of you to have mare to have fun rping or just idling in limsa.
It feels like it's all people talk about and for a big part the only reason why many ppl even still are subbed to this game. To idle in limsa with mods, work with mods and ofc create mods (some even for real money which is it's own can of worms).

The modding boom really killed the vibe and enjoyment for me personally when it comes to social interactions, because it kinda feels like you're not part of the cool kids club and are missing out.
And the fact mods are technically not allowed + the feeling SE only doesn't really try to move against it is because they know how many people would quit the game makes all of that just so much worse.

Somewhere modding just went way too far I think and to me it feels like 14 has kinda become like Skyrim in the sense that imagining the game without thinking about modding has become impossible and that kinda sickens me to the core.
I wish people could just love the game I loved for so many years without having to change so much about it.
Especially because so many people barely interact with 14 THE GAME and just idle around and mod, making their tiddies gianormous, wearing gear they haven't farmed for which also looks different than it actually does and doing dumb fortnite dances.
I don't see how SE will ever actually go full ham on getting 14 to the level it could be at, with a core audience of players who sub just to play their own mini game inside 14 that has nothing to do with the content it has.
Granted that group probably is way smaller than it seems. But that's the thing. It seems really big.

Idk it's hard to explain, I'm sorry if I'm making no sense here.
I don't want to take your fun away, I just really feel modding does more harm to the playerbase and the "soul" of the game than it does good.
I'm really interested to read what fellow player's opinion on all that is.

    Oh and.
I'm not hating on your video.
Fair game to make a guide for sth people are indeed interested in.
I just wish it wasn't necessary and it's not your fault it is.
(And i did actually watch it and it's a good guide, so props to you!)

  6. I fkng need that headpiece mod at the beginning of the video. I have waited since ARR they introduce something like that but they miss. Why can't we have like 4 horns as a helmet or something?

  7. Thanks for the video, now I can send this to my friends instead of sending them the penumbra guide. We have a lot of advanced modding guides on youtube, but a simple one for noobs like this was needed.

  8. …. Whatever happened to show don't tell when it came to mods? The more public this stuff becomes the more likely it is we're going to have an anti cheat circle around and kill all of this. Not to mention the current situation with the Stalker plugin. Mods are good and can help both visually and accessibility wise, but the more widespread and vocal this becomes the higher and higher chance they'll just pull the plug in general.

  9. SimpleTweaks specifically is a really great plugin, adds so many features that should be in the game already, including individual colored chat names which make reading chat so much easier!

  10. Hey your time and effort on editing and providing valid help is appreciated but it is SO dangerous to the communities you are trying to introduce people to because this video being live makes it SO easy for SE to find, replicate, and then patch the hell out of the game to make it so that none of this is possible anymore. This stuff is like Fight Club, and you've just plastered a BUNCH of things live as if it's not.

  11. Modding can potentially get your account banned. Not to mention the current news that a modder has used the new blacklist system to essentially create a mod that can stalk players across multiple alts and gain access to their account ID. While modding is good and it can breath life into tired games, I would suggest if you want to mod, you find games that are more welcoming of the practice.

  12. You really need to take this down. Like some others have said, modding is like fight club and you don’t talk about fight club. It doesn’t matter if this is something you think people need or want, it’s bringing way too much traffic to something that’s completely against SE’s ToS. It doesn’t matter that you mention that twice, what matters is that it’s out there to gain traction. Some people even just use plugins and mods for QoL and accessibility. You having this out there for the world to see could lead to negative impacts down the line, like SE creating/adding anti-cheat software and more to completely end the modding scene. and then people who use it for the aforementioned reasons will probably have issues playing with how many effects are continuing to be used that cause their issues. Everyone will be without something that makes the game fun.

  13. Sam.
first off sharing how to do modding is also a bananble offense, including showing or linking mods.
second of its not as simple as square just allowed it.
BY Jap Law modding is illegal.

I feel like you need to represent this little important detail too.

  14. I wish this was around some years ago when I first started modding. Everything you've said is exactly what I do down to a T (even making sure I am in Party/Alliance chat when typing out slash commands for anything). I hope this helps others in the future who wishes to get into modding, you a doing a great service my friend, subbed!

  16. If SE catches someone, sure they can't ignore it. That said I'm sure a Viera with a thick butt is not on the same level as someone dropping a tactical nuke on a day one Ultimate boss then getting the DNA records of everyone on the server with one click.

As someone that has been deep into the rabbit hole I must give you commendations for explaining things in such a clean way, yet, keeping some details away as they would make things sound more complicated than they really are

  18. This might be the worst timing to upload a video like this when Square is starting their war against plugins and mods right now. They are in contact with their legal team. Did you not hear about the Playerscope Drama? They want to go much harsher against 3rd party tools and enforce their stance against mods.
