Normal difficulty Trials: Part of the story questline of an expansion. Little to no relevance after doing it once.
Extreme difficulty Trials: At the start of a new expansion, the first 2 extreme trials drops Weapon and Accessories. Majority will be weapons on later Trial releases that will be a placeholder and can be a better choice than a crafted weapon even with 5 materia slots due to having a higher item level and weapon attack. And yes, mounts. Completing the mount for all extreme trials for an expansion will reward you a special mount related to what kind of a mount is showcased.
Unreal: A fight from previous expansions that are one up on difficulty of their Extreme version. TLDR fighting an old boss on level 90 with the required item level versus fighting an old boss on level 50 without your full kit. This content can reward you some aesthetics (mount, glamour/costume/skin, housing items(?))
Dungeons: Tied to main story quest. Drops gears to help you progress as you play.
Raids:
1. Normal raid: You can get normal raid pieces as a replacement if the crafted gear has bad substats for your class. An introduction to what you are going to fight and expect a mechanic with an additional gimmick into it that will be in the Savage version
2. Savage raid: A harder version of the normal difficulty. Rewards you the highest item level up to date in a form a chest that you can open on any class that you have and will generate the item for that specific class. Guaranteed weapon and mount on the last floor of the savage series.
Ultimate: The hardest raid content that ffxiv has to offer. Basically, a fight from previous expansions that are combined on a single instance. You will fight different bosses on every phase. No checkpoints, you wipe? you're back from the start. Finishing this fight will reward you a title and a totem which you can exchange for a glowing weapon having the same item level of the current savage tier there is.
Alliance Raid: A 24-man raid that are either tied or not to the main story quest. Rewards you gear pieces every boss and triple triad cards, pet, glamours from the final boss. You will also get a currency that you can exchange for an item that can be used to upgrade your BiS.
All of the content mentioned above gives you tomestones that you will need to purchase BiS gear
I might have missed a few here and there but i hope this helps you on what to expect in FFXIV end game.
