So I just completed THE TWINNING in FFXIV, and I have some thoughts to share with you.

Final Fantasy XIV is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Square Enix. Directed and produced by Naoki Yoshida, it was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 3 in August 2013, as a replacement for the failed 2010 version of the game, with support for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and macOS releasing later. Final Fantasy XIV takes place in the fictional land of Eorzea, five years after the events of the original 2010 release. At the conclusion of the original game, the primal dragon Bahamut escapes from its lunar prison to initiate the Seventh Umbral Calamity, an apocalyptic event which destroys much of Eorzea. Through the gods’ blessing, the player character escapes the devastation by time traveling five years into the future. As Eorzea recovers and rebuilds, the player must deal with the impending threat of invasion by the Garlean Empire from the north.

More about Final Fantasy XIV:

“Final Fantasy XIV is an MMORPG and features a persistent world in which players can interact with each other and the environment. Players create and customize their characters for use in the game, including name, race, gender, facial features, and starting class. Unlike in the original release, players may only choose to be a Disciple of War or Magic as a starting class—Disciples of the Hand and Land are initially unavailable. Players must also select a game server for characters to exist on. While servers are not explicitly delineated by language, data centers have been placed in the supported regions (i.e., North America, Europe, Japan) to improve the communication latency between the server and the client computer and players are recommended to choose a server in their region. Regardless of server or language, the game features a large library of automatically translated game terms and general phrases which allow players who speak different languages to communicate.”

  1. Do keep in mind that the Twinning was the other endgame dungeon back in 5.0 so it given the extra info we needed for how the CE came back to this point of time and place. I really hits home how big our PCs are to the world of ff14 and how much that our story means to these people we both knew and those who came after only getting the tales told, never seeing us living in the flesh.

Any other MMO is going to have a hard time to ever top ff14's story if any of them even try.

  2. And that's where the name "The Twinning" comes from – The twinning of Omega and Alexander.

On Werlyt. Ok, I understand, with all the chat hype, that you might be a little wary. I do wish the chat, and myself included, had not gone that way.
Yes, the story is heavy. You will absolutely be infuriated with one particular NPC. All I will say is that it does have a satisfying ending, though maybe not a completely happy one, as is Ishikawa's wont. The fights are fun, they change things up a bit, some Gundam action for one 🙂 . What I'm saying is, give it a try. It's worth it, even if only that we get to see more of Giaius and learn a bit more of his story.

  3. I'd STRONGLY recommend reading the short stories "A World Forsaken" and "An Unpromised Tomorrow" – they're available on the Lodestone, and give a bit more information about what life in the timeline Graha came from was like.

  4. Werlyt is good but uneven (in terms of story quality), the trials themselves are very fun though, and the second of the three trials has such a smooth rock soundtrack for part of the fight.
The Warring Triad trial series is also arguably the most lore important of the three trial series from HW/SB/ShB, and if you have done all of the ShB rolequests allows for an additional side-story quest to be unlocked.

Of the three 24-man Alliance raids, Ivalice is probably the one that connects to the MSQ the most (and is an unlock requirement for accessing Bozja if you ever want to try it). But the Shadow of Mhach is a funny Indiana Jones-esque adventure story too. The NieR raids are fun but they are definitely the most MSQ/lore disconnected from FFXIV world/story.

Also if you want to appreciate ShadowBringers more I recommend unlocking and doing a optional level 60 dungeon that was added in 3.2 of Heavensward, “The Lost City of Amdapor (Hard)”, players who had done that dungeon had extra context when the ShadowBringers trailer came out originally.

  5. I find interesting the fact that since it involves time travel, the dungeon don't make qualms about talking of your deeds in Crystal Tower, Alexander and Omega, even if you had not cleared them yet (CT was optional until 5.3). Because you will do it, eventually, at some point in time, and the time loop will close perfectly.

Werlyt have amazing fights, but I found it a bit meh on the story. My friend that is a big Gundam fan was getting super hyped by all the Gundam references, but most of them flew over my head until he explained them to me.

Hildibrand is a good break between heavy contents. And each Hildibrand arc is broken into episodes (one per patch), so you don't need to tackle a whole expansion of cutscenes all at once, you can do one episode per day (roughly an hour if you watch everything, maybe two with streamer banter accounted) and alternate with all the other content you need to do.

  6. If you're going to do Warring Triad, I also recommend finishing the first 2 HW extremes and then unlocking the Warring Triad extremes. If you then finish all the role quests in Shadowbringers, you then get even more story content
