Why this one? Imo a big letdown of a song to raid to
If this keeps going on, you will have a reaction to every FFXIV track. =P
The piano portion of the song is from a Shadowbringers dungeon, the song is titled; "Shadows Withal" which I really hope gets reacted to someday… the full piece being a remix of "Without Shadow" which is the classic Ascian theme music. Then we have "Thunderer" which is where the ominous male choir parts are from and basically major boss music that's been used since A Realm Reborn and still gets featured for world bosses up through Endwalker.
This mashup blew me away when I heard it since I love Shadows Withal as dungeon music. ^_^
3:58 You have no idea how well you hit the nail on the head in regards to the character this song is tied to
Phase 2 of that fight has a song called white stone black which I think is much more interesting.
Has anyone requested Rhythm of the Realm or Dedicated to moonlight yet?
Basically (long story short) Hephaistos merged his soul with his crazy wife, then split his own soul in two to keep the corrupted part sealed, the one you fight here. So yes he completely have a big identity complex xD incredible that you got it only with the song. Great video!
Part of the reason this song is instrumental is because, especially in Savage Difficulty (the hard mode that requires a lot of real-time co-ordination between eight people), this guy has a LOT of voice lines that dominate the fight entirely.
Oh, after hearing this I want to hear 2nd phase always xd
My Savage PTSD is triggered
For some reason, I'm imagining Sonic the Hedgehog, and many other heroes from many different worlds, joining the fight against this boss.
16:30 – I can't speak for others but I have the BGM cranked way above the sound effects most of the time lol
this song gets way less love than the vocal track from the same series of fights, which you have also listened to, "Scream". I personally think this song is way better than Scream though, but I'm always a sucker for the instrumental tracks that mash a bunch of leitmotifs together.
Highly, highly recommend you listen to "Heritor of the whorl – Eden leviathan's theme" it is super good, and in the same raid series as the Titan and Ramuh themes you listened to. Great videos, keep it up!
When you said the boss character has something of a dual identity problem, you're pretty much spot-on there. Naturally, context matters but it's in the general vicinity of what you felt about it.
The observation you had about the piano part is actually interesting in the fact that it was placed and how brief it is. Not necessarily just because it's a leitmotif from a previous song (which closely relates to the boss), but because of what it stands for:
Whatever this boss character turned into—with much of the sinister overtones of the general song matching his appearance—those changes were inherently born from a brilliant and innovative mind, which is represented by the classy, jazz-like piano segment rising for a moment as if to remind the player (or the listener) of that fact
It's interesting that you note the extra sounds going on in the background. When it comes to raiding, there's all sorts of players and for every one that leaves sounds roughly default mix levels there's another two that turn up or turn down certain sounds or BGM. Overall I think most people end up with most sounds turned down a bit, if only because their voice chat requires or allows for it when people queue in to talk.
With all that in mind, I've found my personal preference is probably the opposite of yours – I don't have the time or mental energy to appreciate very busy instrumental tracks. I lose track of the details because my focus is on the fight. But music IS a huge part of fights, so I love when the music finds ways to enhance the actions going. As you may have heard, FF14 fights are like a dance and a big part of the music synergy is in matching up to the movements that the players are doing around the room. Some of my favorites are the ones that swell at epic moments in the fight because I finally have a moment to take it in, or it pops in suddenly and grabs attention by force.
The splash of the jazzy motif from Shadows Withal, I think, is hands down the best part of this amalgamation of sounds.
yo you were on point with the story the music told you, like wat
phase 2 grew on me pretty quick. make sure to get the video with boss going into phase 2, worth the spoilers haha. You also keep nailing some of the story from listening to the song its kinda wild.
You were right at the end there, all notable bosses have an intro cutscene when you get around to fighting them, which will display a title card with their title on top, and name below.
Yay more 14, for real so much of endwalker you haven't heard yet
.
This song is fantastic! Buuuut…. it really does not sound the same without all of the battle quotes. This boss is VERY chatty.
Please listen to White stone black from the savage version of this fight, it sounds like it’s straight out of devil may cry it’s so good
I have a request do you think you can react to dynasty warriors 5 dance macabre?
You nailed it when you said "identity crisis," that's extremely thematic to this boss's story, but to hear you say it made me realize how much the music helped sell that theme even further
Can't wait IF you do it.. Mount Ordeals FFXIV.
This song is way more incredible than Scream, that jus tsounds like a generic rock song, this is a mashup of themes from the game masterfully interwoven in a new baddass beat, the game shines when instrumentals like this gets added. in HW most of the songs were instrumentals and those are some of my personal favorites.
Prepare for the Euphrosyne battle music as I have no doubt someone will request that soon!
I think you should also listen to "white stone black" as it is the savage version of the song and has lyrics.
The savage version of this is way better imo. Hope it's in your queue!
"This song has what I call an "identity crsis" ". Boy you have no idea how hard you hit the nail on the head – cus it doesnt only fit the song but also the boss u fight xDDD
"An identity crisis" is an interesting description for the song for this particular fight…
I'm surprised no one asked you to hear the original songs this comes from, yep, this be a mix.
"This song has an identity crisis." With that one line you hit the bullseye on what this boss is about. Admittedly, with a bit of macabre soul magic involved but that's the essence of it.
I'm not as knowledgeable about music as you are but I've been playing so long (5.5k hours) and am a music scroll collector in-game. While this track doesn't have as much grit and flair as Scream (both are part of the Abyssos raid series), I adore Embers because it juggles so many leitmotifs from various characters and locations associated with a certain in game faction.
I love when Soken, Imamura, and the team deliver us catchy headbangers. But there's just something about these callback themes and the way their composition tells you so much about who you're fighting. That short jazzy phase is very much a mirror of Kefka's brief moment of lucidity in the fourth Dancing Mad movement. A moment of recollection. As if another part of him is breaking the surface and reflecting on who he once was and what he has become. Maybe a brief questioning of if it was worth it. But then that part is re-submerged and we loop back to the aggressive battle theme. The male choral section is similar. There are actually three roles competing within this one body: the dutiful leader, the inquisitive researcher, and the corrupted visionary. With the last dominating and contributing the most to the cacophony.
It's like a musical character study and I'm always in awe of the creativity when they do it.
Edit: Regarding your favorites. Answers was composed by Uematsu and arranged by Narita. Harrier was composed by Uematsu and arranged by Imamura (Black Wolf Stalks Again & Scream composer). I don't think we have the official credits for Embers yet but the new patch dropped a little over a week ago. So we should know pretty soon.
To maybe make some more sense of the context, (of course spoilers for anyone who didn't do this content and still will) this is the story about a guy respected by his community for his intellect, and his wife wanted to do something very taboo and bad, and fused with him to share how she saw things with him, but he ultimately decided to stick with his gut feeling and kill her. Because he had remorse, and also had now her feelings inside of him, he decided to split himself in two parts, and lock the remorseful, and by his own standards, tainted part, and live only with his logical and intellectual side. It's why you see a part of the song being more chaotic and edgy, one being more imposing and majestic, and the other being super jazzy and having that more intelllectual feel to it. The piano portion is just rearranged from a dungeon which is this guy's laboratory.
It's remarkable how you hit the dual personality bit about the character.
He essentially is part of another character that was split and locked away from another character. It was the dark and rejected part of the characters soul.
And just from the way the musical story spoke to you, you hit that right off.
Bravo Sir
This game must be a curse to people who react to music, since it manages to drop a half dozen new bangers every few months
When I first heard the Piano section of this piece. I was immediately blown away, not only cause it works but also the same beat is played in another dungeon OST called Shadows Withal. I highly recommend reacting while the tune is fresh in the mind.
I remember clearing this fight for the first time on release day and absolutely losing my shit when the jazzy part of Shadows Withal kicked in. Spent the whole fight jamming.
Sounds tracks I recommend are Perfect Dark and Metroid Prime.
This theme has an interesting history, since the ascian theme (the octaves at the start and then the melody with the choirs) is from the original villains theme in 1.0, which was composed by Uematsu. The rest is other themes related by story added by Soken (like the jazzy themes), and they have all been mixed in this song together, which is probably why you get that identity crisis feel.
This is the most disappointing raid theme the game has released. It’s dull, quiet and boring.
8:33 This, this right here, what you said about the guitars being slightly off-time, and your earlier "identity crisis" bit? That's a REALLY good allusion to what's going on with the character the song focuses on. To put it mildly, he's having an identity crisis of his own.
"This song has what i like to call an identity crisis." – sounds about right
17:55
You nailed it on the head!
The character does have an identity crisis of some sort, and that is in fact central to his story.
Ah yes the best song this raid tier
You read that right come at me brah
I hope you will do "White Stone Black" soon, because that is the theme of the second phase of that boss and so it would be fun to not just see you analyze it but also compare it to the first phase. Also for this raid tier FFXIV is on right now, the first boss has an Instrumental version of the song "Scream", a song you reacted to before. Then boss 2 and 3 have the vocal version of Scream and this boss has "Embers" and then "White Stone Black" as themes.
