Playing Final Fantasy 14 Reminded Me How To Enjoy World of Warcraft Again!

In this video sharing how playing through Final Fantasy 14 for the first time gave me perspective on how to enjoy World of Warcraft again. It helped remove some veils that I did not know exist. It’s amazing how sometimes we can miss the most simple of things that are in front of us.

  1. This min-maxing focus at a time was the thing that made me drop Diablo. people i've been playing with were constantly telling me that I'm playing wrong because I should've picked those and those abilities and try to get specific items. Whe I asked them "why?", answer was "to be more efficient". And when I asked "why" again, the answer was "to get better on Nighmare". That was Diablo 2 btw. Then I saw similar issue with WOW during MoP and dropped it. It was just not fun – to play game the most efficient way rather than way you feel should be fun.
In FF I found myself rather looking at actual mechanics in every fight – how boss behaves, what are telegraphs, and what to do in each phase of combat. Even in HW fights against bosses became more exciting simply because they focus on balance between player's understanding of fight and on gear. If you're underlevelled in gear, that will be hard, but levelled gear that would be enough is easy to buy in stores and just doing some dungeons is enough to get what you will absolutely need. RNG is more of "What you'll want".

  2. As someone who played WoW from vanilla through BFA, and as someone who started playing FF XIV back in ARR, I am glad to hear you've found a way to enjoy playing the game again. I am also glad to hear that you're not trying to pit one game against the other as far as "which game is better". As welcoming as the XIV community is, they can still have a mindset of "you can't like both" at times. Don't listen to them, play how you like (they don't pay your sub 😛 ) and keep enjoying whatever you put your time in.

  3. Glad to see you're enjoying XIV, but, if I could offer some advice; Stop moving around so unnecessarily when tanking. When you only have ranged DPS it's fine, but when you have melee DPS that need to hit positionals, you're just going to piss them off. Especially Monks.

  4. Actually there is a DPS-Meter for FF14 – it's called ACT and more like an external program. As FF14 officially doesn't support addons and SE don't want people to get shamed like in WoW, there is something like a silent toleration – You can use ACT for your personal monitoring and optimization, but you are not allowed to write anything about it in the game or blame people for low dps.

  5. There are dps meters addons, however, you're not supposed to talk about it or you can get banned from the game. It is technically against terms of service to have it, but devs have said it's fine as long as you don't talk about it. I would say a large portion of raiders in FFXIV have a min/max got to follow the meta mentality, not all, of course. Glad you are enjoying FFXIV and have found how to play WoW a way you enjoy again.
