Mogstation DRAMA + Criterion Rewards DRAMA + MOUNT DRAMA [FFXIV 6.25]

Welcome to the Telenovela friends, let’s sip some tea as we watch the calamity unfold. Mogstation no longer lets you gift items, criterion dungeon rewards suck and it’s salt in the wound to see that new mount versus… purple chair… it’s a lot to unpack but let’s start trying.

  1. About the gifting problem. There was a good thread on twitter explaining the situation and why it has come to this. Mostly because of RMT sites which would resell mounts and other items for cheaper prices. Also, the hacked accounts from the phishing URLS (I keep posting reminder in my FC's discord to beware of those links) probably increased to a number that made them do this. Then again, I'm no coder or have knowledge about finances but I guess it had to become THIS BAD that they chose this patch for restricting. I personally don't mind it since I don't really have people to gift anything (tho, now I guess if I did, it would be glam sets ^^;)

  2. "But square needs to make money" This argument only holds up if ffxiv was a free to play……..but…

adding an edit to add this too
There is a big difference between a company saying "We need more money to survive" and actually needing more money to survive. If saying that is all they think they need to do to get us to accept more cash shop stuff you have to be foolish to think they wont say it regardless of if its true.

  3. On the topic of store mounts, 14 doesn't lack money, there are estimates that each region has approx. 1 million players each, so a rough estimate is $30 million a month. They are not having money issues, and if they were 11 would be the first on the chopping block anyway and there has been no indication for that being true. Over all, it's just greed, the same greed that killed WoW and will kill 14 if it's an escalating trend. Fat cat costume a month or 2 ago? Sure. Now you're at it again and have barely added anything new to the game? Naah, not good enough.

  4. I saw someone complaining about the lotus mount completely disregarding that we just got 3 new mounts from this little patch alone. The throne is lore relevant, if a little boring, but the silkie and the new tribal mount are lovely and unique.

  5. I keep saying the store needs to be called out, this is not a free to play game, the prices are excessive, they're already leaning into the trap of putting a lot of unique stuff in there for very high prices. This is how it starts and you end up where WoW and other MMOs ruined by the cash shop are. FF14 makes a huge amount of profit, the argument they need to sell these things for these prices is just objectively untrue and it's frustrating for people like me that have seen this happen and ruin games tine and time again. I don't like it and I stopped buying things from the cash shop completely as a result because the amount of stuff they're putting there is getting faster and more excessive for a game that is both buy to play and has a paid sub.

  6. The point made at 3:30 is a bit misinformed. Yes, WoW does have a lot of recolor mounts; however, that's the reason the game has ~800 mounts and FF14 has ~200. The vast overwhelming majority of WoW mounts are achievable in game and there are hundreds of unique models only achievable in game. The notion that WoW store mounts are the "only cool mounts" is incorrect. The amount of "better" mounts in both FF14 and WoW stores are the same. WoW has 24 store mounts total, FF14 has 32. Both games definitely have significantly better mounts that are achievable in-game but people should not act like WoW store mounts are somehow "way worse" than FF14's store mounts. A good example is the Sunwarmed Feline mount on the WoW store, its perfectly comparable to the Fat Cat mount on FF14's store.

  7. I have heard all of these justifications from people defending blizzard back in the day and seeing the same happen to FFXIV kind of makes me a bit sad.

Just because a mount is already released in other regions does not mean that you cannot, or shouldn't try, implement it into the game without it costing real life currency. Also to follow this point a bit further. Why release it as a cash shop item instead of a way to earn it in game to begin with?

The money argument was made for WoW back in the days and it has remained an AWFUL argument. Why should we pay even more money for items in a game that we already pay monthly through the sub(+ all the additional service subs (Additional retainers/Bank space)) and bi-yearly for the expansions?

PS: Just because there are other great mounts in the game does not justify them locking additional once behind a paywall. If they wanted to sell it then they could've made it a limited event item such as the /vexed emote or songbird/maid outfit and put it up on the mogstation later. That's how many seasonal items are treated and it would've been a much "fairer" compromise. This would've been a fantastic mount for a Chinese new year event or perhaps something more permanent, like the gilded namazu mount but it's connected to Radz-at-han.

  8. MMOs die if people stop playing. MMOs die if people leave. Selling mounts ultimately kill games.
Store mounts always ruin the game. It devalues everything other mounts. It sucks that they make these something anyone can get and not something that you earn.

  9. I think it's a bit melodramatic to suggest that FFXIV would be shut down without the mogstation mounts. According to Square Enix's financial report published this past August, the 1st quarter of fiscal year 2023 (aka this past summer) showed MMOs earning 22.2% of net sales for the whole company. FFXIV probably holds the lion's share of that number, seeing as FFXI population is small now and Dragon Quest X doesn't exist outside Japan.

Because of how much FFXIV is bringing in, I think it's much more likely that Square Enix's decision-making is more concerned with how XIV's profits support the development of other games and not how XIV is going to make enough to support itself.

  10. Its good to see that the dungeons mount reward is tied to the lore and story of the dungeon itself. Hopefully as more dungeons get developed, we can get more rewards that are both spectacular, and accurate to the areas we explore

  11. It sucks about the gifting being removed. When on lockdown, we'd gift mounts and glams on birthdays, get in game and hang out. It was such a blast.

It's a nice easy, quick gift idea that does get appreciated.

As for the mounts… It would be nice if we got more fancy mount rewards in game. Not existing creatures like the dhalmel but something really cool and interesting.

While I'm here, I'm surprised there's no mount reward for collecting X amount of them. I quit wow a lonnnnnng time before I played xiv but I remember being shocked that there was no reward for collecting mounts. One of my favourite hobbies in wow was doing just that.
