Just taking a look at Alliance raids in FFXIV and how they compare to looking for raid in World of Warcraft. They are both raids that can be queued up for…but that is about all they share in common!

DESCRIPTION:
Final Fantasy XIV[b] is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Square Enix. Directed and produced by Naoki Yoshida, it was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 3 in August 2013, as a replacement for the failed 2010 version of the game, with support for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and macOS releasing later. Final Fantasy XIV takes place in the fictional land of Eorzea, five years after the events of the original 2010 release. At the conclusion of the original game, the primal dragon Bahamut escapes from its lunar prison to initiate the Seventh Umbral Calamity, an apocalyptic event which destroys much of Eorzea. Through the gods’ blessing, the player character escapes the devastation by time traveling five years into the future. As Eorzea recovers and rebuilds, the player must deal with the impending threat of invasion by the Garlean Empire from the north.
The original Final Fantasy XIV, released in September 2010, was a commercial and critical failure. In response, then-Square Enix President Yoichi Wada announced that a new team, led by Yoshida, would take over and attempt to fix the issues with it. This team was responsible for generating content for the original version as well as developing a brand new game which would address all of the previous release’s criticisms. This new game, initially dubbed “Version 2.0”, features a new game engine, improved server infrastructure, and revamped gameplay, interface, and story. The original version shut down in November 2012 and was followed by an alpha test for Version 2.0.

World of Warcraft (WoW) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) released in 2004 by Blizzard Entertainment. Set in the Warcraft fantasy universe, World of Warcraft takes place within the world of Azeroth, approximately four years after the events of the previous game in the series, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne.[3] The game was announced in 2001, and was released for the 10th anniversary of the Warcraft franchise on November 23, 2004. Since launch, World of Warcraft has had eight major expansion packs: The Burning Crusade (2007), Wrath of the Lich King (2008), Cataclysm (2010), Mists of Pandaria (2012), Warlords of Draenor (2014), Legion (2016), Battle for Azeroth (2018), and Shadowlands (2020).
Similar to other MMORPGs, the game allows players to create a character avatar and explore an open game world in third- or first-person view, exploring the landscape, fighting various monsters, completing quests, and interacting with non-player characters (NPCs) or other players. The game encourages players to work together to complete quests, enter dungeons and engage in player versus player (PvP) combat, however the game can also be played solo without interacting with others. The game primarily focuses on character progression, in which players earn experience points to level up their character to make them more powerful and buy and sell items using in-game currency to acquire better equipment, among other game systems.

LFR is a shit show of toxicity and I avoided it like the plague. Alliance raids that I have done have been fun with zero drama. . .I don't play wow any more.
The fact that til this day, people still usually have wipe in some alliance raid and the fact that they don't shy away from 1-hit KO mechanic (heck, we have 1 alliance raid that the first boss opens with 1-hit KO and will have some more through out the fight), the different in difficulty is quite clear.
Wow's is harder, because you have to rely on 39 other people instead of 23 other people, and 39 liabilities make it more of a risk than 23
Source: I have never done any WoW Raids,
As a fellow WoW Vet…it's apples to Oranges…or more accurately muddy water to fine wine. I LOVE the Alliance Raid experience. So much so I run the Roulette as a part of leveling so I can get experience with the new job I'm working on. LFR? the few times I did it was at best okay but usually just to hopefully catch up on covenant renown when I still played WoW.
Now do a comparison with a Savage Raid from FFXIV Delubrum Reginae
I still remember first day of the last alliance raid of Stormblood.
The Thunder God boss was so hard. It's was so that it became known as the 'Alliance breaker' in the community.
The amount of people leaving the alliance when it first came out was funny XD.
Just to add, the coins you get from doing Alliance raid can help in getting bis by using them to buy augment items for tome gear, since bis is a combination of savage items and end game tomestone items. To get endgame tomestones, you have to do duty roullettes, endgame duties which includes alliance raid.
Never played WoW. I've also never played the Alliance Raids when they were new, since I've only recently hit endgame compared to the AR release dates.
I will say, its very satisfying to get through an alliance raid, especially through the mechanics. While it doesn't seem too difficult when there's enough experienced alliance members, it is VERY noticeable when there's incompetent/inexperienced people. Inexperienced ones tend to get hammered at the start of a boss fight, or whenever a new mechanic shows up, but they quickly adapt and understand majority of the time. Incompetent ones just ignore everything and carry on with what they're doing, hence why you see them with an 8+ vulnerability debuff.
And the alliance raids only "feel" easy. You mess up one mechanic, panic, and suddenly everyone is doomed. Tank didn't move away from party during tankbuster, and no one notices or knows the mechanics of the tankbuster? Shortcut to a party wipe, causing the pressure to increase on the other two parties. Even with old CT, labyrinth, have had many wipes on the last boss in recent months, because people take too long to realize "oh, we're supposed to do something".
This is the biggest problem with WoW and the main reason blizzard has an extremely difficult time satisfying their players. They have their players qordoned off from one another in their own little niche corners of the game. It creates so many groups of players with vastly different opinions of how the game should be and blizzard wants them all to keep playi-erm paying the game so they try to satisfy everyone and this ends up making less content for each individual playe-erm payer to enjoy. So to keep people invested they force players to engage with the different content of the game by creating endless grinds for them. In FFXIV content tends to overlap and draw the attention of all players even if it's content that is not made to satisfy your prefered niche.
LFR is more of do it for the sake of doing it and the mechanic don't change so you know what happen but alliance raid are testing ground for the DEV where they make new mechanic and when u run for example Stormblood raid in Mini ilvl let say it way beyond LFR there
While I completely agree Alliance raids are more difficult than LFR, I think death count is a bad metric to use as a comparison. Mechanics are designed to be more lethal in FFXIV because they're designed both to be avoidable and death is easier to recover from. So naturally, we die a lot more in FFXIV even in easier content. All you need is any healer, a summoner or a RDM over 65 and they can give you the damage down dunce cap of shame to wear for a few minutes while you get back into the fight. I'm assuming that WoW still caps the number of BRezzes that can be used in any given fight.
Alliance raids are much harder than LFR, imo. I hated LFR. It was a total joke. And also, I don’t want to see the fights before going into their heroic version. I can’t tell you how sick of the Castle Nathria raid I was after six months of grinding it. I will never go in there again. But the Alliance raids… they are just visually stunning too. I was like… wow. I mean, i’ll run paradigm breach over and over just for the visuals. I used to think Ulduar was amazing looking. But every dungeon, raid, trial and alliance raid from Stormblood on is more visually and musically stunning than anything wow has ever done. Just a better experience over all. If someone is trying to choose, quit wow and come to FF14. I wish I did years ago.
LFR in WoW is so brain dead that 3 out of the 5 healers respec to dps to make it go faster
From own experience from playing both games, it usually goes like this:
Alliance raid: After a wipe occurs, the players reassemble and one of the players calmly explains the mechanics of the fight. Nobody rage quits and every just goes back in without complaining. If someone does complain, the rest of the group would usually try to calm them down. If more wipes were to occur, people will just keep going until the boss is beat.
LFR: After a wipe occurs, half the raid rage quits and the rest start to bicker with one another, trying to figure out who is the one to blame for the wipe. This usually involves a lot of name calling and cursing. Someone might suggest vote kicking out all of the players that were the lowest DPS on the meters. Another player might explain the mechanics but would usually do it in an overly aggressive manner. If too many wipes occur, people would just keep leaving the raid or will just out right disband if it gets bad enough.
My experience in FFXIV’s Alliance raids: People helpful, informative, friendly, and patient. If there’s a wipe, we try again.
My last experience in LFR: Group rushing, almost no one communicating, two people kicked for asking fight mechanics, 1/4 of the group leaving after a wipe, and some guy typing in chat “Guys! I just shit my pants! What do I do?” Over and over and over.
Delubrum stressed me out for a little while with the doom mechanic.
Dat music tho!
Been playing since day one and that Nier raid in the video still manages to kill me at least once every time I run the alliance raid. Not because mechanics, I've done them so many times it's part of my muscle memory but damn, it's the people around you that gets you. When the mechanic happens to people who aren't prepared or simply just too greedy, it can make it a lot harder for you. Personally, I really like that because every time you go in there, it's different. It makes me want to go do it again and see if I can go out with flawless victory lol.
I'd be interested to hear how high end raiding in FFXIV compares to WoW. I was a pretty hardcore raider in WoW way back in Vanilla and BC, but… that was a long time ago 😛 So far in FFXIV I haven't touched any Savage, Extreme or Unreal content, partially because I haven't found a group for it, and partially because I'm not sure I can handle such things now I'm a doddering old man.
In WoW it's common for guilds to spend several hours a night, three to four times a week for months at a time in order to clear content, and personally I absolutely relished the challenge of raid encounters that took hundreds of attempts to get down. Is there anything like that in FFXIV? How long does it take top guilds (or FCs, whatever) to take down the toughest content in FFXIV?
And incidentally, how do you even go about finding a group for stuff like that? I've basically played FFXIV solo so far, but when we finally get Australian servers I might look at finding a regular group to play with. A static, I think it's called?
It's not uncommon to see ppl with current ultimate or savage gear and minimum gear doing the alliance raids. So that always shows me the wide range of ppl it attracts
I would generally say the encounters in alliance raids are substantially harder, you're just a lot less likely to wipe because of the greatly increased ability to resurrect people in combat in FF14. If you took something like Red Girl or the Thunder God and asked WoW players to do that in an LFR you might as well just save them the repair bill and spot them 10 Determination right from the start.
