I love this comment section. So glad to find people who aren't part of the "Hermes is just a soft sad boy who did nothing wrong" camp. Or the "Hermes has depression and isn't responsible for his own actions" camp.
Hermes purposefully subverted the Peer Review system and abused the power of his position so that he didn't have to answer to anyone. He makes the decision to embrace pain and sorrow in order to say "fuck you" to the Convocation and Etheiryan society as a whole. He is the architect for what comes after.
Hermes really sent a bunch of emotion powered birb kids into space thinking nothing would happen.
