The problem with modern MMOs is the emphasis on level caps above all else instead of other aspects of the game. Modern MMOs since World of Warcraft, including Final Fantasy 14, fall into this trap. The games that break from that trend are very rare. The Phantasy Star games like Online, Universe, and Online 2 used to break from this trend, with the emphasis being on some of the special effects of gear more than anything else. But by late Online 2, that regressed back to the old aim for the highest stats with the newest gear. Games like WoW and FF14 use the weekly reset cycle to try to limit your progress and extend the shelf life of the game, but it ends up being a cyclical problem. These games aren't designed to last. They're designed to drag out existing content as much as possible instead of just letting players loose to have fun.
