How to Catch Horned Frog in FFXIV (Sungilt Aethersand)

This is a short guide for catching Horned Frog in FFXIV. When reduced it can give upwards of 20+ Sungilt Aethersand per frog… if it’s the right size.

📋Window Prep
Arrive early enough to be able to get 10 Angler’s Art Stacks AND to be able to store 3 mooches. I showed up around 18:30 (6:30pm) and that was enough time. Once at Xobr’it Tsoly, use Collect, Patience II, and cast out with Golden Stonefly Nymph. There two things we’ll do during the prep, get 3 Cloud-eye Carp ‘stored’ to mooch later, and to get 10 Angler’s Art Stacks. I prioritize the Cloud-eye carp getting because it’s the more important bit.

Cloud-eye Carp are a ! bite before ~15s after casting. Use Precision Hookset to catch any ! bites, and if it’s Cloud-eye Carp, use Spareful Hand to ‘store’ it for later (we’ll get to that in a bit). Repeat catching ! bite until you have all 3 swimbait slots filled. After you’ve done that, just continue to use Patience II to get 10 Angler’s Art Stacks.

After both of those things are done, use Prize Catch, Big-game Fishing, and then wait until the window opens at midnight.

🎣Catching Horned Frogs (“Swimbait Phase”)
Right before the window opens, click on one of your stored Cloud-eye Carp swimbait to set it as your bait. Just after midnight passes, cast out like you would with normal bait. Horned frog is a !! bite that bites AFTER ~12s with a macro timer (see below). It will overlap a little with Sunbright Axolotl, but that’s ok.

If the !! bite is BEFORE 12s, then use Rest to reel in early, apply another Cloud-eye Carp, and then cast back out again.
If the !! bite is AFTER 12s, then (at this point) use Hook to reel in the fish. If it’s a Horned Frog, click Yes to accept the collectable, then apply another Cloud-eye Carp and cast back out.

Repeat this for all your stored Cloud-eye Carps.

🔁Catching (more) Horned Frogs (“Post-Swimbait Phase”)
After you’ve burned through your stored Cloud-eye Carp, use Patience II and cast out, catching Cloud-eye carp like before. We want to use Big-game Fishing (which, notably is not required, but does help ensure maximum size Horned Frogs, and thus sand yields).. but Big-game Fishing cancels our current mooching opportunities. To get around this, whenever you catch a Cloud-eye Carp, use Spareful Hand, THEN Big-game Fishing, then select the Cloud-eye Carp as your swimbait (the last two don’t really need to be in that order as long as it’s after you store the Carp.). From here just cast out the cloud-eye carp like before.

Repeat this until the window closes or you’re done catching Horned Frogs for some odd reason.

Good luck and happy fishing!

  1. All axolotl 😢 3 windows in a row.. I could have had sooooo many more sands had I spear fished, mined, botanyed. This is not the first time the unreliability of fishing has wasted my time this expansion. Great video as always though and thanks for the information.

  2. Wait, I don't get it. Precision hook is used to remove hook debuff on strong bites, but a "!" is a weak bite. How does that work? Shouldn't it be Powerfull hook instead?
