How to Catch Chain Shark in FFXIV ("Rare" Scrip Fish)

This is a short guide for catching Chain Shark, the new “Rare Common Fish” added in FFXIV Dawntrail. It joins the ranks of other similar (and very well liked and respected) fish, like Phallaina, Aapoak, Sculptor, and Barreleye.

Bait: Crimson Lugworm (Ghost Nippers work too)
Conditions: 18-20, Any Weather
Folklore Book: Yok Tural
Min Gathering: None, but if you want big sizes, have hella high perception.

📋Window Prep (3x Yak T’el Crab)
Arrive EARLY to Xty’iinbek Tsoly, use Collect, Patience II, and cast out with Crimson Lugworm. Yak T’el Crab is caught with Sharknose Goby mooch – which you get the Sharknose Goby as a ! bite when you cast out. Catch any ! bite with Precision Hookset until it’s a Sharknose Goby (if you get the other ! bite that isn’t Goby, you can use Surface Slap if you have the GP for it.) Once you get a Sharknose Goby, mooch it – it will mooch into either another Sharknose Goby, Yak T’el Crab, or Xty’iinbek Sleeper. Goby is the only ! bite, and Yak T’el Crab is a !! bite before ~15s on the mooch.

If you get a !! bite before 15s, use Powerful Hookset to Catch it, and if it is the Yak T’el Crab, use Spareful Hand to store it as Swimbait.

Repeat these steps until you have 3 Yak T’el Crab and 10 Angler’s Art stacks. Once you’ve gotten both (or at least 6 Angler’s Art stacks if you’re rushed), use Prize Catch and Big-game Fishing, set a Yak T’el Crab as your bait, then wait until the window opens.

🎣Catching Chain Shark (Swimbait Opener)
Once the window opens, cast out with Yak T’el Crab. Chain Shark is a longer !! bite, but can still overlap with Xty’iinbek Sleeper. Any !! bite after 20s on the Yak T’el swimbait could be Chain Shark.

If it’s not Chain Shark (or it’s a !! bite before ~20s), reapply Prize Catch and Big-game Fishing if needed, reselect Yak T’el crab as your swimbait and then cast back out. Repeat these until you’ve used up all your swimbait. Even if you catch a Chain Shark on a swimbait, if you have more – go for another one, it’s not a lot of time and worth the chance at scrip.

🎣Catching Chain Shark (Post-opener)
Once you’ve used up all your Swimbait, use Patience II and cast back out. Basically you’re going to repeat getting Yak T’el crabs like you did during prep. However, you will STILL USE SPAREFUL HAND ON THEM. This is because that we will want to use Big-game Fishing, which cancels the current mooching opportunity. If we store a Yak T’el Crab, we can use Big-game Fishing (and other skills that cancel mooching) then still mooch.

Repeat this until the window closes or you’re sick and tired of trying for Chain Shark.

🙋‍♂️Why Big-game Fishing?
If you’re NOT after the big scrip payout of Chain Shark, then you don’t need Big-game fishing at all. Big-game fishing pushes the size of large-sized fish to the top 1% size they can be, meaning, the top 1% collectability. With the right perception rating, Big-game Fishing can push your Chain Sharks to above the threshold needed for 1,000 scrip. Hence, why it’s recommended in this guide. If we need Chain Shark in the future for a mooch or something related to a big or legendary fish, Big-game fishing will most likely not be recommended.
