How Final Fantasy 14 Helped Me Beat Cancer

This is my story with how Final fantasy XIV helped me get through my cancer journey. This was a hard video for me to record and even publish as I’m not use to the vulnerability publicly!

  1. huge fan of youtube starting to randomly promote really small channels and videos because the amount of effort you put into this is fantastic, and as someone who got into ffxiv this year i loved hearing your story

  2. Heya MightyMouse! Glad our community could help you! Those 'toys' may not have materially fixed anything, but sometimes, dude, you just need a bit of material joy in your life to get through the overwhelming misery. I spend some of my money getting all the pretty controllers xbox comes out with even though I'm the only one in my house who plays games, because I feel like the happiness I get from looking down and seeing a pretty 'toy' each time is worth the monetary cost. Happy for you!

  3. Hey man, I just want to tell you that I'm really glad you're here. Life's really hard sometimes, and your burden has been heavier than most. It's okay to stumble, be a little selfish sometimes, and try to do things that make you happy when everything is hurting. Everyone can make mistakes, but it can be very hard for most people to forgive their own mistakes. I'm glad it seems you've stepped back and evaluated what is helping you rather than harming you and have turned your life around for the better. That's a really hard thing, not everyone can do it. Sometimes it can feel impossible to take even one step farther, sometimes we stumble and loose progress towards our goals, but as long as you're here you can keep trying.

I'm glad you found a source of release that brought you joy and you were able to replace other habits or addictions that you didn't want. Some will shame people for playing games past a certain age, but if it brings you joy, isn't harming your life, helps you socialize and meet more people, then these are only good things. And games can give you that catharsis or release you need, or sometimes give you a message that resonates deeply with you when you need it because you aren't always just watching or reading it but experiencing it. This game got me out of a very dark place and through one of my own hardest years in my life as well and has helped me meet some people that are incredibly dear to me. I hope you enjoy your journey as well and it brings you joy. But please also know it can be okay to cry and feel sorrow. Society loves to shame vulnerability and it can be very hard to be open to it, but it's actually incredibly healthy. I thank you for sharing and being vulnerable on your own journey. I hope we can still see more from you in the future!

  4. It's amazing to hear so many stories of people beating cancer. Not sure how much you know about the lore surrounding FF14 but Masayoshi Soken who does most of the music for it, he was battling cancer in secret whilst working on Shadowbringers and he beat it before the release of Endwalker. The music in Shadowbringers he wrote from hospital.

I've been playing FF14 for years and I'm having a cancer scare right now (waiting for biopsy results). Thank you for sharing your story!! It's a magical game and I'm glad you found comfort in it whilst you were in the thick of it.

I don't know how far into FF14 you are, but listening to the Endwalker music that Soken composed after beating cancer is helping me a lot, it's so full of hope. Especially "Flow". (Don't YouTube it if you don't want spoilers though lol).

Take it easy and enjoy your adventures in Eorzea. You've more than earned it!

  5. ❤️ Thank you for sharing your story. For being so honest and so open. It's amazing how much I recognize in your story. You're an amazing story teller holy shit dude.

I'm so glad video games helped you. I'm so glad FF14 helped you and I'm so glad you're still here. I'm so proud of you.

As someone who's takes daily medication I try to just treat it as me taking care of myself and not put it in the same ballpark as my drug abuse. I try to remember that one is a potion the restores me to full health and helps me be who I am. While the other one turns me an into a massive flaming asshole.

    Sending love

  6. Good luck moving on man, must feel hella good to finally get out of that damn mess your unlucky self got into. I'll admit i was ready to criticize you when you said u spent the gofund me on figurines but the fact you felt guilty/ashamed and went and earned the money back really shows how much character you have. I'm really glad the game and it's community helped you in these trying times, hope it'll continue to bring you much kindness, understanding and joy.

  7. I understand the frustration with how late the tumor was discovered. My best friend had pains in his leg for a few months before they found out he had a rare type of bone cancer. He passed at age 16. I can never forgive the doctors who sent him to a physiotherapist thinking nothing was wrong.

  8. Well this was so heartwarming man. Congrats on kicking that bitch Cancer's ass. If it hasn't been suggested yet, you should learn the story and history behind Dad of Light which was a series released in Japan following the life of a Son trying to get his son to play FFXIV. It's a great one but also, sad but I'll let you figure that part out on your own as to why. Good luck in Shadowbringers and have fun always. We at the Source will be there to help all of you play.

  9. Insane period of life to go through. As a human im sorry that the chaos of cancer swept through your life. As a gamer, I'm jealous as hell you get to experience Shadowbringers for the first time. It is by far one of the best stories ever told in a videogame. Enjoy the ride.

  10. Glad to hear you're improving and that you beat cancer! I also was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer back in 2020. I didn't need radiation or chemo like you did but after my surgery I contracted a blood disorder and there is no cure for it. I understand fully how this game can be addictive and help you get out of your slump lol. Welcome to the community and enjoy Shadowbringers XD You're in for a wild ride!
