How Bard Feels Currently in FFXIV | Shadowbringers Job Overview

Battle DJ best Job 😉

Welcome to a video where I casually and loosely go over how Bard feels and plays at level 80. Everything mentioned in the video except for the general rotation and opener, is my own opinion. I honestly do think that this job is in a really good spot at the moment and is SUPER fun to play. I used the B-roll of Puppet’s Bunker as a way to showcase some average gameplay (with deaths lol) of how this job would go. Hope you all found the video helpful and useful to lay out
in a concise way how fun the battle DJ can be. I hope some of you decided to pick up and invest your time into this job.

I enjoyed making this one, and really like doing some guide contents here and there :3

Like I said in the video, I am no means an expert! I just wanted to offer some perspective how this job plays from a casual bloke that is currently transitioning to Savage raid content 🙂

  1. After getting all of my jobs to 80 I will say, BRD is shadowed by DNC a lot for the raid scene. But, I will say, I hated BRD until I really played it and I was shocked by how much fun it actually is.

  2. gonna be a bit of a wall of text with random ramblings and how i generally personally feel about the class after playing it for a while since starting the game around early 2020 (i know, i'm not some overly experienced veteran in that matter as i've missed the massive reworks Bard went through before my time), feel free to disagree or argue with certain points ofc, it's more for discussion's sake than just me trying to shit on the class that i genuinely really enjoyed until branching out into other DPS'es

as somebody who went through the story 1-80 and some of the raids/EX/unreals as a Bard (i've long switched off to RDM as a primary), going back to the class from other things, as much as i genuinely like the idea behind the class, always feels really underwhelming to me, especially in higher-end things

the buffs it recieved over the last few patches were really nice, and i am well aware that it's somewhere around MCH on the tier (while still being quite far off at its highest performance), i barely feel a difference from them from my own gameplay standpoint
even with the changes to some RNG aspect it's still heavily RNG-based, kinda like DNC, but to me it always felt a lot less rewarding, as if you're "too lucky" it can just overwrite some extra ticks of damage, but i do enjoy the sorta high APM gameplay you can get in dungeons with Mage's and AoE spam

dot apply/refresh feels kinda wack to me, as you'd need to do everything manually to apply them if there's more than one thing to fight, and you don't have something like Bane which SMN has to spread it, nor do you have Tri-Disaster from.. also SMN, to apply/reapply it instantly as an oGCD, so you just kinda vibe out and have Iron Jaws as a GCD for dot refresh every half a minute for everything you had tagged, and god forbid you drop any of the dots, YoshiP will personally come by and strike you down
the refresh just kinda annoys me cause you don't have an alternative for it, but maybe i've just been spoiled by SMN in that matter

Apex Arrow is probably the coolest looking and the most underwhelming ability i've used by far in terms of damage dealt to effort required, hitting like 40k non-crit after so much setup and wait is so dreadful feeling after doing instant 80k+ Drills (w/ Reassemble ofc) on MCH opener and like 90k? Technicals (haven't paid that much attention to the number, but i know it's ridiculously high, non-crit) on DNC opener, and while i know the comparison with those would be more with Barrage as that's in the opener rather than Apex ofc, that doesn't help it at all IMO

i genuinely hope 6.0 has some changes in store for Bard (as i really want to go thru the story as Bard once again), because i really want to like the class but i just find it really difficult to do so at its current state

  3. Mew thinks the bard changes to Repertoire build up was at the start of 5.0, naut 5.3 so a little mistake there
Chu should mention a few thing as well:
    1. Additional effect of Bard's song. As mentioned, Bard is a "Support" DPS. We support the party by just being inside the party and playing songs. All 3 songs have different party buff (note it buffs everyone but the casting bard. You can be buffed by another bard but note that the buffs doesn't stack on other players if you have more than 1 bard in party). The Wanderer's Minuet grants a 2% crit rate buff to the whole party when used, Mage's Ballad grants a 1% flat dps buff, and Army's Paeon grants a 3% Direct Hit (alternate form of crit) buff.

Just having a Bard in the party raises the party overall damage, as such even with the lower damage done by the bard, more often than not, the party overall damage will be higher than 1 without a Bard/Dancer.

    2. The Warden's Paean. Yes it removes debuff and it is a 30second instant cast Esuna. However, you should also note that, when used on a player (including self) that do not have a debuff, it instead grants a barrier that protects from 1 hit of dispel-able debuff. This in 24man raid can often come in handy to let you simply shrug off incoming debuff and continue dpsing with no worries.

    3. Barrage. When used, it instantly grants you Straight Shot Ready, which in turn lets you use Refulgent Arrow (or Straight Shot at lower levels). However, the actual effect of Barrage is to Triple the next SINGLE Target weapon skill (GCD) hits. In other words, if you use Barrage, you MUST use Refulgent Arrow as your next weapon skill, or Barrage get's wasted on a weaker attack. So one thing to keep an eye out for is if your 2 DoTs are near expiry, make sure you refresh the DoTs with Iron Jaws FIRST. Before using Barrage->Refulgent Arrow, or risk wasting Barrage on Iron Jaws or letting your DoTs fall off.

    4. Apex Arrow. This is an AOE weapon skill, so note that it can't be multiplied by Barrage.

  4. I fully understand the appeal of BRD, I really love playing BRD in Bozja Fate-grinds because of the stupid combos you can use when combining your aoe-procs with some of the Bozja potions. The damage output overall is ok, just in the middle of the physical ranged. The thing that is most offputing for me and the reason why I don't play the job more is that you don't have a way to spread your dots. One Enemy at a time.

  5. I don't play this game, but I scrolled over and the preview reminded me I haven't seen your mug in a while. So I'm watching it.

Hmmm, as someone who doesn't play this game, as you were talking about abilities in the "Key Abilities and Skills"; if you added like an overlay of like text that said the skill name and what it does, or like the animation/icon (like you did with battle voice) of the ability, it would be easier to follow. I started spacing a bit because it was so much FF14 jargon, but that's just from my POV.

  6. As a galaxy brain bard clown nose off I approve of this video. Ever since I touched that job I could never get away with it. The priority system appeals so much more to me than a set rotation and it always keeps you on your toes. Eitherway it was fun to look at a new players experience with the job and their first step to getting more 'hardcore' ^^

  7. Bard is just super chill to play compared with other jobs. I never get stressed on my Bard 🙂
Disclaimer: I don't need to be "first", I don't parse. If you parse higher than me, I am probably the reason for it. (you don't do more damage than me, you do more damage BECAUSE of me).
I don't need to be "first", I just need to have a good time and I always have a good time on my Bard 🙂

  8. Ooh i'm a very casual player, started last year. First char, BLM, love it, switched to RDM, easier. Now i wanted an aly, a DNC, but had to lvl up to 60 first, so choose BRD, not that i was really expecting much fun, but looked ok to get to 60 for my DNC
But i lvlt it to 80 (Still behind on msq though). I live BRD, it's so mobile, you can press a button every millisecond, compared to BLM
And i don't wanna be 'the best' and just have fun. This is way easier on BRD, than on BLM, cause i prepare for burst and then have to move or there's some sort of interruption, wich ruins my whole rotation
I lvlt DNC a bit now, also very fun so far. But love BRD so much more than i expected!!

  9. I have a question! Where's a quick nock at? Should it ot be used in AoE situations when lets say 3+ mobs pack isntead of a Burst shot? Well, i guess straight shot ready buff is more valuable than some little AoE output.

I'm a WoW vet refugee, i picked up Bard as the most resembling to my hunter main from WoW, i enjoy this class so much, it has so many dependencies and rotation strings compared to WoW's huntard. To be completely content with me Bard i wanna have a pet to battle with me as a class thing, but i thing my battle chicken is doing fine.

  10. I’m only level 60 at the moment, started as an Arcanist, but later picked up Archer/Bard and fell in love. You know, for a class that doesn’t necessarily do the highest damage, I seem to rack up an absolutely inane amount of boss enmity using it. If there’s a move that targets someone that’s not the tank, 9 times out of 10 if I’m playing Bard I’m getting slammed with it (admittedly to my own chagrin). I say this from experience. Nothing like getting trapped in the air repeatedly by Nidhogg and losing your DoTs because you didn’t have time to refresh them :’) or the stunlock from the mammoth in Dusk Vigil, that’s also a classic

In terms of the class itself it becomes sooooo much more streamlined once you get Iron Jaws, which is very nice. It’s a lot about paying attention to where your DoTs and songs are and knowing when to refresh them/start a new one.
