Guild Wars 2: First Impressions from a WoW & FFXIV Player (2021)

#GW2 This is not your normal first impression video. Alas, this is the first installment of my series; There & Back Again: My Journey Through MMOs. My goal is to try out all of the MMOs, from the top to the “trash,” and give each game a chance. I’m not going to play for an hour and say, “it’s amazing!” or, “it’s horrible!” I’m going to play the game until it gets old, and loses the impression I’d initially had in order to even pick up the game in the first place.

With that said, Guild Wars 2 is my second ever Western MMORPG, and I was excited to have that new player experience once more. This video only covers my opinion on character creation, and the tutorial. If you like the content, and want to stay informed, consider following me on Twitch & check out all of these other links too! Also, let me know what you though of GW2 if you have played it!

  1. My advice, immediately remap keys A+D to strafe and use right mouse to move the camera. It'll make moving around much smoother, and it'll free up keys Q+E for other abilities.

  2. Not sure if anyone else said it, but there is an "about face" setting in gw2, you have to manually bind it to the key and its not necessarily automatic, but its there

  3. Keep at it. There is so much depth to this game, that I've been playing it since the game dropped, and still have only seen the tip of the iceberg. Once you get familiar with the mechanics, learn the traits and skills of your class, and join groups that work together with their particular buffs and skills, it is one of the most rewarding games out there.

  4. strifing around is actually good, just keep facing the target, keep in range of your weapon and pay attention to the yellow "casting" bar where you need to stand still to make that attack (some abilities have it, but it says so in description – which is always very useful to read) or you cancel it by moving or pressing something else.
Maybe next time you try ranger, which starts with longbow and a pet of your choice (1 out of 3 options). With ranged weapons walking around in fight is much easier and actually a good tactic because melee foes cant hit you if you "run away" a few steps constantly (or whenever they come too close to you). Also having a pet, learning its AI+Controls and just seeing its gameplay is very funny.

  5. Don't know if I ever actually watched the human intro cutscene before. On day one I rushed to secure the names I wanted and just made charr and asura afterwards because I liked the way they moved.

  6. As veteran of gw2 (36k ap) i must say game is really disapointing. Does it mean you should avoid it? No. Chances you will be good enough to see those problem arent that big. Chances you will make deep enough analyze to understand what is wrong with it are also small. If yt would show dislikes i would probably have nice amount.

  7. personally, the goofy races and obscure classes alone prevented me from buying into GW2.
i literally couldn't find a single race/class combo that i was interested in.
i could have played a human, but i really didn't want to be playing a game filled with players running around as a bunch of goofy races.

  8. Always great to see people getting into this game! Something neat, that you might not encounter if you don't look for it or if people don't tell you, is that Guild wars 2 also has this really interesting and unique feature called "Action Camera" which you can set up in the options menu. When you activate Action Camera, you actually get to play GW2 like a third person shooter. You get a retical in the middle of your screen, and your mouse now directs the camera, with your character attacking in the direction you point. Initially I didn't really think that much of it since it kind of has an adjustment period to it, but goodness do I find it emersive. There's something so validating about running around a scene, aiming your shots (It will still auto-lock so you don't have to have pin-point accuracy), and just experiencing combat from the perspective of my character. Also neat is that you can adjust the camera position, so if you want it to be over your character's shoulder to help you see better, or if you want it lower or higher to the ground, you can get the angle just right to make the experience more streamlined.

If you haven't given it a shot, Action Camera is just a really fun and cool way to play the game, and it's neat that they have this option available. It's easy to miss since they don't really advertise this feature of the game, but ever since I started using it frequently it's become my favorite way to play.

  9. Humans in Guild Wars are pretty unique as far as fantasy settings go. They fill the "Elder Race" archetype that's more commonly given to some flavor of elves. There are ruins and remnants of past human civilizations all over Tyria. Ascalon in particular is quite a fun place in GW2, since in the original Guild Wars you played as a human from Ascalon, which was invaded by the Charr and almost completely conquered.

Humans are also alien to Tyria. It's known in lore that the gods brought humans to Tyria from another world in the ancient past. Not much is known about the specifics, but the main story very briefly touches on it.

  10. The way attacks hit or miss and the movements/jumping/dodging makes this game much more skill-based and less gear-based than a typical MMORPG like WoW, SWTOR or FFXIV. It also makes the battles more fast-paced and action oriented, IMO the best combat system in any MMORPG after Black Desert Online. Only bad thing about the combat is that sometimes it gets too flashy and visually cluttered with effects.

  11. Is it me or there's a surge of former WoW players checking out GW2 for the first time? I don't know what's driving this trend but the more the merrier! Welcome everyone

  12. Character creation aside (as great as it is), I think the main thing that hooked me was that your character was voiced. Almost all other MMOs follow that "silent protagonist" trope, the fact that your avatar in this world has their own voice and personality, really sold it for me.

That and also the fact that your race can affect dialogue well into max lvl and even into expansions (even if it's just minor flavor that doesn't change the actual story). "Little" things like that make the world just feel so immersive.

  13. I don't play gw2 these days but I still find the character creation to be one of the best. It has a western style I'm more comfortable with compared to something like ffxiv and bdo and I feel like they give you tons of meaningful templates and sliders that really let you create a unique character that looks great.

  14. Re: Better Proportions on Female models. The character/armor design team at anet is very diverse, so there is a load of more variety in skimpiness/coverage and generally more "realistic" proportions on models. (If I remember correctly the original designer for the human/norn females was a woman who fought tooth and nail to get better proportions on them and removing boobs from Female charr and asura as they didn't make sense for the biology for the race).

  15. This is the MMO i just keep coming back to after months or years of breaks. The story is amazing all voice acted for every story scene and I love my team as i kept going on with the story. Luckily enough they have a new expac coming and it won’t be the last one, some rumour are that it’ll be like ff14 with a ‘rebirth’. They’re actually upgrading the game engine for DX11. Game runs on DX9 and is very dated plus most modern computers can’t utilise it’s full performances cause of it (multi threads cpu’s and newer gpus) even with my dx12 mod it barely get to 90 fps with my gaming pc. So hopefully more expacs keep coming. Plus steam will get the game too soon after the expac.

  16. If you're interested, you might like to check out SWOTOR (Star Wars:The Old Republic) – really nice character creation, great stories and really smooth combat. The best part? You don't have to be a Jedi to be awesome…even against Jedi. And you can also be Imperial.
