Vuln = Vulnerability aka the cheeto debuff jocat referred to xD
But dragoon and reaper are both pretty fun, all the melee jobs are. Dragoon and reaper just happen to be my highest leveled melees xD
As a Melee brain who mains Black Mage, he's not wrong about Greed. As for not being interested in Estinien, just wait til you see him without his helmet.
as someone who played all jobs, I love Samurai and Reaper the most in melee. I used to love Monk in ARR but since they do lot of rework to it I dropped it
I started playing FFXIV 3 and a half years ago as a Lancer and I still main Dragoon to this day, it feels really nice to play as of Dawntrail and the only thing I'm not a fan of for Dragoon is that the AOE combo attacks are gotten quite late (Level 40, 62, and 72).
I also play Samurai and Reaper and I personally really like both, Samurai does beeg damage and doesn't have to worry about any Party Members, while Reaper also does beeg damage while being fairly easy to play. I did get Monk to 60 before I upgraded from the Free Trial and wasn't too big of a fan of it, and I've yet to try Ninja and Viper at all but plan to try Viper eventually.
TLDR: I highly recommend Dragoon, Reaper, and Samurai if that ever ends up intriguing you
Reaper has a more modern design maybe compared to Dragoon, so I would suggest Reaper between the two. Ninja and Monk feels harder to pick up for me, but nothing super hard. All in all whichever you like the look of.
Mained a monk class since 1.0, n’ while it still remains one of my favorite classes, it’s gone through a LOT of reworks (and only recently got a ranged attack…it only took *10+ years * 🤣🤣😭)
But reaper is insanely fun, so if ye stick with FFXIV and unlock it, I recommend giving it a go. Spooky slice be fun as hell 😁
Good news! Dragoon and reaper share the same armor sets except for relic gear.

To translate:
Vuln: Short for Vulnerabilty. If you get hit by an avoidable boss attack, you will usually get a debuff called Vulnerability, which causes you to take more damage from all sources. If you keep screwing up and getting more Vulnerability you will eventually just die in one hit no matter what you do.
Uptime: When you're actively attacking the boss this is called Uptime. Because Melee DPS have to be close to the boss to do damage, they will lose Uptime if they have to move away from the boss to avoid taking damage.
As explained in the Greed section of the video, melee DPS sometimes spend a little too long attacking the boss before trying to move to safety, thus they 'gain a vuln for one second of uptime'.
LB: Short for Limit Break. Normally it is melee DPS that will perform a Limit Break on the boss as their Limit Break does the most damage to a single target. In casual content, a lot of DPS will forget to Limit Break as they will assume someone else will do it. Alternatively in some raids, they do not want to use the Limit Break in case the group starts to die and could be saved by a healer Limit Break (which can revive all KO'd party members at full HP and MP at level 3). So they will tend to avoid using Limit Break until the boss is almost dead.
I hadn't leveled all classes to max-level yet when i saw this JoCat-video the first couple of times – plus, i've been a Dragoon-main at that point, so i might have had blinders on a bit, but now that i had all classes leveled to 90 (being on my way to 100 with them, Dragoon and Reaper already being there) and having spent most of the second half of Endwalker as a Reaper, i have to say that despite what JoCat says, Reaper is a LOT more straightforward and simple, even after the bit of streamlining they did with 7.0. At least in my opinion.
And they took one of the jumps :(.
I've found that Reaper's arcane crest ability is really satisfying to use. You get a defensive shield, and also heal the entire party if you use it right before getting hit. It (along with arcane circle) gives the job a surprising amount of utility, that's a bit at odds with the edgy aesthetic.
Cool Model
He does have one more that is just DPS.
The play is to level Dragoon until you can unlock Samurai, then play Samurai until you can unlock Reaper, then play Reaper until you can unlock Viper because it's daddy Yoshida's new favorite XD
The first melee I played was dragoon. Maybe it's the way I've set up my hotbar with the job, but I find dragoon clunky to play on controller, I prefer monk instead.
I play Reaper, its a really fun job. If your interested in Dragoon and Reaper they share gear so you can play both.
Being a dragoon gets you some extra dialog line in Heavensward as you get to meet one of the characters early and they will remember you.
Dawntrail has changed quite some things for all class. Some more-so than others. So some of the things mentioned in the video is outdated.
Monk – The most convoluted melee class to date. Previously it was just 1-2-3 1-4-5 1-2-3 as a basic combo. Now it's 1-2-3 1-2-3 1-4-3 1-2-5 having to stare at either the skill bar or the balls bar. As a raid DPS, the most optimal play is needing to press Brotherhood every time it comes off cooldown, you can let it drift just a little bit but at the same time, you also need to manage your rotations that your strongest hits will land within the burst window. The guide that is 'most accepted' is 45 pages long. I get anxiety whenever I mess up a rotation somewhere.
Samurai – The 2nd most brain dead DPS class out there. As the video states, Samurai is a selfish DPS, meaning that they do not provide any sort of raid buffs or benefits outside of a universal melee DPS debuff – Feint. All you have to do as a Samurai is do a rotation to the point that it is as simple as breathing. Combo, combo, combo, oh, Meikyu Susei is coming off cooldown soon, better get started on that combo. You do it right and you'll always be landing the big and important attacks within the raid burst windows.
Viper – La numero uno; the number 1 braindead class ever to have existed. Viper is also a selfish DPS like the Samurai offering no utility nor benefits outside of their personal DPS and the universal melee DPS debuff – Feint. Viper has no rotation. You just press buttons, hopefully pressing the shiny ones. You press the one 120 second button they have whenever it goes off cooldown. This enables you to use Awaken and go into Kirito mode. The best thing about this Awaken skill is that you can press it ANY TIME you want. People will drift their raid-wide buffs, just by a couple of seconds and Viper has the ability to hold off their burst without interfering their regular combos. How crazy is that? There's nothing you need to think about, attack, attack, attack, check for buffs, Kirito mode.
I was a Reaper main in Endwalker, and it was the first time I was a melee main and I loved it. It's simple, like I am very smooth brain lol, so I can't play roles that require too much brainpower, at least not very well, but Reaper is simple, yet extremely satisfying to play in my opinion. Teleporting out of danger and back in while not losing any uptime is also incredibly satisfying and feels badass. The only problem is it unlocks once you get to 70, so if you're interested, I suggest Dragoon first because they both share a gearset, and once you get to 70, you can pick up Reaper and see if you like it
Honestly, I've been a Dragoon fan since Final Fantasy 4 . . . Kaine was the best in that game. You just have to make sure you time your big jumps right, or you become the Dead Dragoon meme.
…viper 😛
Just since you asked. Melee is my least liked role, but for role quests and story I settled on Reaper. Its fairly simple, especially if you ingore positional nonsense that is less important than staying out of damage markers. Viper had the most user friendly HUD. The swords on the role HUD light up blue for flank attacks and red for rear attacks, and also light up left and right for which attack, right or left, in your combo you need to do next so you never have to look at your cast bar. Not as sparkly and flashy though. Dragoon was my least liked. Later it has an insane 5 hit combo that is a heck of a workout for your fingers to reach if you dont have a controller, and most of your starting armours have you dressed as a half naked man in a thong. Not very defensive looking. Samaurai was just not my cup of tea visually though it was very simple mechanicly to play, and the latest changes to monk make their basic damage rotation a nightmare. Seriously instead of 1,2,3,4,5,6 repeat its now more like 1,2,3,1,5,6,4,2,6,1,5,3,4,2,6,1,5,6… etc. No seriously. You spend your whole fight looking at your cast bar trying to work out what's next and you'll eat a billion AOES while distracted. HOWEVER… since you cant start reaper, samaurai or Viper, unlocked L70, L50 and L80 respectively you'll have to start off a different role and get it later. If you intend to stay Melee from the start… Hmm… rogue had the most interesting role quest, but lancer was the simplest melee class you can start as.
I play several melee DPS classes actually (monk, samurai, viper, dragoon, reaper), though I consider samurai as my main melee DPS class. I just like samurai as such (not FF14 specific) and when I saw that there's such a class in the game too, I tried it. Works well. No group wide utility as they say but then again, doing big damage is utility by itself. Besides, if one wants to do utility, that's what support classes are for. I also like that with samurai I can pretty much in an instant land huge hits on target, outside of raids and instances, in open world it usually means "mob attacks me – one smack within 1s – mob's dead – I move on".
For dragoon, make a lalafell dragoon. Name it Mega Tonne. And then watch how that tiny feller comes in from an orbit and lands with a big explosion. Always funny.
My melee choice wasn't available when Jocat made this. Viper is SOOO MUCH FUN!!! And uses a bunch of the same equipment as my Dancer, though not all the same.
