Gathering Achievements are Miserable – Getting Every Achievement in FFXIV #16

This week in Final Fantasy XIV I decided to take on some gathering achievements! Join in the journey of one Lalafell, one pickaxe, and one hundred minerals. Turns out collecting countless obscure rocks to get achievements is ROUGH, so watch this dumb video to share in the suffering, idiots!

  1. Thought I would go for Necromancer. Cool title, seems like a fun struggle. What turned me off of it was the prep. Just getting aetherpool gear up to 50/50 was a pain that took months, so I just dropped the whole thing

  2. Something I thought would be easy, but turned out much more difficult — making the Martial Artist's Sleeveless Vest.
I would have said the PLD ARR relic I worked on, but it was not difficult — just tedious for me in retrospect.
    I only dabble in the gathering/crafting classes so no Splendorous Tools, not an omnicrafter, just mainly got some I wanted to Lv. 90;

Figured it would be easy as I just got the toughest material out of doing the Treasure Dungeon for fun as well as another material required having Shared FATE Rank 3 in Ultima Thule (which I did all the EW areas for fun a few random days).

Was not ready for some gathering spots requiring high enough perception. No Splendorous Tools, but with just the Lv. 90 Purple gear, you can BARELY make it with affixing your materia very carefully.
I had to scramble for those materia as I was broke and scramble I did, painfully. (I only managed to find that I had enough blue cowries from continuing to mess with my Island Sanctuary well past unlocking everything)
I was humbled AGAIN when some spots also required that I had the Folklore Books, so had to say goodbye to my white scraps. Max cap is not enough so had to ALSO go out and gather more… twice via collectibles (My Custom Deliveries was used up trying to level a new crafting class).

Did not have enough Craftsmanship for Crafting some of the materials either so had to scramble for materia YET again. I realized that I literally ONLY had enough Craftsmanship solely because even with affixing the materia JUST right — just ONLY made it because the Soul of the Crafter gave me just enough (+20 to Craftsmanship) to make it.

I was juggling my web browser with tab groups to make sure I got everything, some stuff I caved in and bought directly from the MB.
All in all, what I expected an "In-and-out 30 min adventure" turned into an entire day and a half endeavor.

I only learned later that specific glam ( or rather its set) is very recent (like Patch 6.5 recent, not Patch 6.05 or Patch 6.3) hence the difficulty.
Yeahhhh not something I wanna "dabble" again without having more… prep.

I had to discover a whole new side to this game just to get that vest. I thought about the rest of the glam set, but NOT being an omnicrafter has certainly turned me away from the idea for now.

Will say that I did start leveling said classes now as a result of this… mess.

  3. Others in the comments mentioned it, but Teamcraft is a huuuuge help for the timed node stuff. I've actually got most of the mining achievements done because of that even though I'm pretty far behind in combat achievements in comparison.

  4. To answer that question. I was hoping that getting Necromancer would just be a grind and not much else if I went into it as one of the two "easy PotD" classes.
I died at about floor 23 to a bad bit of planning, and I realized that it was going to be so much more challenging, even on Red Mage.
Haven't really put too much time into it, but I'm hoping to get the title before Dawntrail. I just need to keep at it.

  5. Talan (the guy you trade with for the ARR Master recipes and tools) is The Worst NPC. He's annoyingly condescending and demands all sorts of bizarre things in exchange for his outdated and mostly useless wares. Every time I have to deal with him, I swap to Blue Mage and drop a Four Tonze Weight on his head afterwards.

  6. For anyone following Cider's example here, my special interest powers engaged and oops—
I went more in-depth than I anticipated, so I guess here's my YouTube Comments Guide on tackling the Gathering Logs.

    TL:DR;
    Do your dang JOB QUESTS!
Go one map at a time swapping between MIN and BTN using both Triangulate AND Prospect (ROLE actions) so you don't need to backtrack. You'll have to travel plenty hunting down Legendary nodes, no need to add to it for normal items!
Use Luck of the Mountaineer / Pioneer to save loads of time on Hidden items.
Folklore time: One-stop shop for your Folklore books at the Rowena's Representative in the Crystarium for HW, SB, and ShB. For EW, you've got to do the Token trade, so plan, pace, and/or grind your scrips to buy your Tokens to trade for your books in Radz-at-Han!

    = = = = = = = = = = = =

Okay, now for the More Words version:

    1) For non-timed nodes: Save time, only visit each map once! Use Triangulate, Truth of Mountains AND Truth of Forests. They are ROLE ACTIONS not job actions! You WILL need to manually enable the off-job one as you change between BTN and MIN, but swap between the 2 as you go and you won't have to backtrack to the same zone again.

    2) LUCK OF THE MOUNTAINEER / PIONEER! DO YOUR JOB QUESTS. This Level 55, 200 GP skill REVEALS HIDDEN ITEMS on a node! Instantly get that pesky Hidden item! NOTE: Some nodes can have multiple Hidden items. RNG will still RNG in these cases, but Luck of the Mountaineer / Pioneer will save you SO much time.

    3) UNSPOILED and FOLKLORE / LEGENDARY NODES: Around 8:00 Cider runs into needing some books to unlock some nodes, so here's the run-down! KEEP IN MIND:
    – Unspoiled and Legendary (Folklore) nodes are BOTH types of timed nodes. Unspoiled nodes do NOT require a Folklore book to find/access.
    – Ephemeral nodes are also timed nodes, but unlike Unspoiled and Legendary nodes, they spawn in clusters and will continually refresh as you hit each in the loop. Once their window ends, though—POOF! Even if you're mid-gather. These are generally for farming collectables for scrips, which you may need if you're on a deadline to get all these books! Plan accordingly.
    – Geological Folklore for MIN, Botanical Folklore for BTN. (Ichthyological for FSH if you're going for completion)
    – If you already have USED a book, you'll see the little yellow checkmark in the corner of the icon in the vendors' lists! IT IS POSSIBLE to buy a book before you actually READ / REGISTER it, so if you want to be EXTRA SAFE, use the "Search for Item" or /isearch function to make sure you didn't squirrel away a book in a retainer's pocket and then forget to take it out and read it once you leveled up! (I've definitely never done this myself, definitely!)
    – TWO unlock methods for HW, SB, and ShB! The on-content method of unlocking Folklore books is buying and trading Tokens with vendors in the respective expansions' hub cities, which remains viable. For past expansions, we can thank the devs for adding a second option with direct scrip purchases via the Rowena's Representatives NPCs! The scrip cost is identical either way.

3A) ARR FOLKLORE – FAKE! NO BOOKS! Level to 50, do your job quests, get geared, and you're set to hit all the ARR Level 50 nodes and under. These are all Unspoiled nodes.

3B) HW FOLKLORE – 3 BOOKS per job! 125 low-level scrips each, or 375 total for a single job.
Areas: Coerthas, Dravania, and Abalathia's Spine. These books cover different numbers of maps, but they all have the same cost.
You can buy direct from the Rowena's Representatives in Ishgard/Foundation, Kugane, and the Crystarium.
OR you can buy 5x Blue Gatherers' Scrip Token (25 scrips each, under Gatherer's Scrip (Materials/Misc) > (Lv. 60 Materials/Bait/Tokens)) from usual Scrip Vendors, and take those to Idyllshire to exchange for your desired book with the Splendors Vendor at X:5.7, Y: 7.1.

3C) SB FOLKLORE – 2 BOOKS per job! 250 low-level scrips each, or 500 total for a single job.
Areas: Gyr Abania and Othard. An even 3-3 map split per book.
You can buy direct from the Rowena's Representatives in Ishgard/Foundation, Kugane, and the Crystarium.
OR you can buy 50x Regional Folklore Trader's Token A (5 scrips each, under Gatherer's Scrip (Materials/Misc) > (Lv. 70 Materials/Bait/Tokens)) from usual Scrip Vendors, and take those to Rhalgr's Reach to exchange for your desired book with the Splendors Vendor at X: 9.7, Y: 12.4.

3D) ShB FOLKLORE – 1 BOOK per job! 400 low-level scrips each, 400 flat for a single job.
    Oops, all Norvrandt!
The only Splendors Vendor with them on offer is in the Crystarium.
To buy with Tokens, you'll need 40x Regional Folklore Trader's Token B (10 scrips each, under Gatherer's Scrip (Materials/Misc) > (Lv. 80 Materials/Bait/Tokens)) from usual Scrip Vendors, and take those to Eulmore (The Canopy, top floor) to exchange for your desired book with the Splendors Vendor at X: 11.6, Y: 11.0.

3E) EW FOLKLORE – 3 BOOKS per job! 1600 low-level scrips each, 4800 total for a single job.
Areas: Ilsabard and the Northern Empty, The Sea of Stars, and The World Unsundered. Buy them in this order, if you can't get them all quick, since they cover 3, 2, and 1 map respectively.
THERE IS NO SPLENDORS VENDOR FOR THIS ONE FOLKS. These are the current ones, so you're stuck with the Token trade for now.
You'll need 16x Regional Folklore Trader's Token C (100 scrips each, under Gatherers' Scrip (Materials/Misc) > (Lv. 90 Bait/Tokens)) from usual Scrip Vendors, and take those to Radz-at-Han to exchange for your desired book with the Splendors Vendor at X: 11.4, Y: 9.1.

  7. Goal that's a lot harder to finish than I thought? MOVING OUT!! I have no idea what I'm doing, I hate the local Social Security office, and I'm just trying to get used to medicated for anxiety and ADD and autism and depression for the first time in a decade. All I want is to live in an ok apartment with my boyfriend and adopt a cat together. Is that too much to ask?
