  1. So The Burn is one of my favorite dungeons, its very pretty, it has a surprise twist with the Allagan ruins, it has diverse enemies and the bosses are a good mix of mechanics, although Mist Dragon is a very harsh step up mechanically. This dungeon is also very fun for me personally as it was the first I woke up for a patch release and I basically did this dungeon as blind as possible with a random group. We wiped 3 times trying figure out the mechanics of Mist Dragon but overall had a good time with the challenge.

I will note that Mist Dragon is definitely a difficulty spike in terms of what the game expects of players in normal content, it has a lot of phases with little mechanical overlap in those phases and it just does a lot of damage, especially when you are running it for the first time and have not done research. The game from here on does this more frequently, although few dungeon bosses hit quite as hard as Mist Dragon even now.

  2. 35:36 Prior to Duty support being added to this duty, Hien and company would be absent from your dungeoneering, and as such the dialogue at the end differs quite a bit now compared to previously. So if Hien sounds a little off between takes, that’s because these lines were re-recorded quite recently.

here’s the old (pre-Duty Support) transcript:
[HIEN] (from off-screen): “Ah! there you are!”
[HIEN]: “Between contending with bloodthirsty beasts and sand in my… every conceivable place, I had begun to despair of finding you again.”
[YUGIRI]: “Do you recognize the crashed ship over yonder?”
[YUGIRI]: “Mistress Alisaie and I briefly inspected it. It is the vessel that bore Master Alphinaud away.”
[ALISAIE]: “But there was no sign of him. Nor of Maxima and his people.”
[Y'SHTOLA]: “Warmachina. It would seem they were involved in a struggle.”
[Y'SHTOLA]: “There may be clues. We should split up and search the area.”
    (crossfade)
[YUGIRI]: “Hm. These were no ordinary soldiers.”
    [YUGIRI]: “Over here!”
(rest is the same between versions)

  3. Today on PlayFrame: MAIN STORY CONTINUES, THIS IS NOT A DRILL

Welcome to The Burn! I find it really funny that this dungeon is part of this patch, for reasons we will see… soonish. Also, I guess this confirms that aether-drained land just kinda Looks Like That. It's kind of beautiful, and I do quite like how the devs have been using great visual variety to make up for the fact that most dungeons past… around the start of Stormblood have been long lines with no alternate paths and occasional curves gameplay-wise.

Also, it's been a bit since we last saw Y'shtola! random story – as a max height Femroe who started in La Noscea, I believe meeting her was the first time I realized that I was taller than most of the main cast.

…somehow I'd already forgotten that there was a bunch of Allagan stuff underneath the Burn. Considering their fascination with primals, I would not be surprised if they were a major contributor to the draining of this area.
The final boss of The Burn has a Blue Mage spell, but I will leave exact details of how to get that to the person who's been talking about learnable Blue Mage spells as we encounter them because I haven't gotten this one and in fact haven't touched BLU since I got it to 60.
Also, enjoy the generic Stormblood boss music while it lasts. Shadowbringers has really good generic boss music too, but the vocal chorus bit from the Stormblood boss music just hits *different*, man…

Anyways, next time on PlayFrame: we continue forwards, towards the Azim Steppe, ever closer to Shadowbringers.
Will we fight? We shall find out.
That being said, "next time" might not be as soon as the usual two days from now, because three days from now is Christmas Day. To all those who read this, may you have a Merry Christmas (or other equivalent holiday, like Hanukkah) and a happy new year.

  4. Playfriends, it's time to get back to the MSQ and kick off the next arc. This is your spoiler free lore comment!

Patch 4.4, Prelude in Violet, was released in September 2018. In addition to the MSQ, it gave us the Suzaku fight in the Four Lords storyline and the finale of the Omega Raids.

There is one more optional fight that I could see Durmin doing, but it's understandable that he doesn't. It's just that the Azim Steppe has this Rathalos…

5:25 – This info summarizes what we've learned of the plight of the Dalmascan resistance from the Alliance Raid Ivalice quests. Since they're optional, Thancred needs to bring players up to speed. That being said, the intention to turn the outlying provinces into hotbeds of rebellion was Doma's intention, supporting these groups with intel from their shinobi. By disrupting Garlean operations with these groups, Doma ensured its safety until the most recent deal was struck. But starting fires means alerting firemen, and many of these rebellions, the Dalmascans included, have paid a heavy price.

8:10 – Of course, the Doman deal assumes the Garlean's were ever going to abide by something that Asahi intended to be a trap. Doma is still considered an enemy of Garlemald.

9:52 – Hmm, a group of RP players from the DTC. Some lalafells and miqo'te? And some of them seem to be in uniform?

11:34 – "Look, I know I took some time off to help the Domans rebuild. And explore Eureka. Okay you have a point"

18:35 – The advent of Duty Support (and later Trusts) will mean that MSQ dungeons no longer will have Playfriends in them. Optional dungeons will still require other players, but from here on out, it's NPC friends. I'll miss the antics of the Playfriends in dungeons, but we'll see them again if/when Durmin runs Raids (and obviously in 8 player trials).

18:57 – The Burn is a desolate aether-less desert. Interestingly, unlike other dungeons, we'll learn more about it after Durmin completes his run, rather than during it! Prior to the implementation of Duty Support, Hien, Alisaie, Y'shtola, and Yugiri have their own adventure, meeting up with you at the end. In a way, they make their own little light party.

27:00 – I believe in the pre-Duty Support version of this fight, the side drones were not indicated by large countdown bars but rather one would be sparking, indicating it was defective.

30:20 – The Mist Dragon is indeed a FF4 reference and is honestly the most dangerous thing in The Burn. FF4's Mist Dragon guarded the Mist Cave, and must be slain to progress. Later, Rydia learns to summon her own Mist Dragon, to fight Golbez's Shadow Dragon, and learns to use this ability in normal combat. FFXIV's Mist Dragon has an attack at 31:38 that can trip people up. Tab targeting can sometimes result in you attacking the Mist Dragon rather than the summoned heads, and I believe attacking the dragon results in a debuff (or possibly freezing in place). Also, without Duty Support to indicate safe zones when the Mist Dragon swoops in, it can be easy for players to be frozen by its breath.

Since we're so close to Shadowbringers, we can start talking about how NPC quirks work. The primary NPCs you enter dungeons with have some scripted quirks that give some interesting life to their actions. Today, we're talking about Alisaie! Alisaie has two distinct quirks. First, she's a twin and a Red Mage, meaning she will send out Vercures as needed. She will typically prioritize Alphinaud's health if he gets too low (although this isn't typical, as Alphinaud usually heals himself). Her second quirk is more based on her personality. Alisaie will use your group's Limit Break on mobs as soon as it's ready and use LB2 during bosses just as quickly. She'll prioritize damage during these moments, and will be the one burning limit breaks for your party. "There'll be nothing left of you but a smoking crater!"

Next time: More about The Burn!

  5. The Burn! The music here is splendid, the theming is so cool, and we're inching towards Shadowbringers…Stormblood has been great, but this run from 4.4 all the way through to 5.3 is just amazing. Can't wait 🙂
