Happy Friday everyone, and you know what that means🎉
It is time for another Final Fantasy Friday question: who in FF14 had the best redemption arc?
Telling the intensely dedicated shinobi that her skills are "known far and wide" is just the most back-handed compliment possible. I bet she's seething.
Although some don't like the return of Gosetsu and Yotsuyu into the story as it cheapens their previous final scenes, I do so love the juicy thematic connections these events have with Fordola and her past.
Both were shown great cruelty by their homeland (say what you will of Fordola's parents, but attempting to stone a child is evil). Both lashed back against it. Both now sit, locked away (mentally for Yotsuyu), awaiting their judgement that will shape how these newly independent nations conduct themselves.
Fun fact. As ambassador plenipotentiary,Asahi has the authority to act as Garlemald's sovereign ruler in matters of diplomacy, which is the definition of plenipotentiary. Assuming,of course,he's being truthful.
Hm, thank you for the showcase on how the cutscenes have improved in animation! That's something you don't really get playing through, even if I have noticed different and more involved faces.
And that's all I have to really say here, because I too was wondering who among all these new and returning characters was to be trusted at this point. Garlemald is a huge empire, so having different factions with different ideas of how the many territories should be handled makes sense, as would approaching a newly independent territory to head an enflamed conflict off at the pass… but this is all a touch too convenient, doing all of this the moment the former imperial Viceroy was just found alive.
I don’t know why it was a huge shock the ambassador Asahi immediately moved prisoner exchange for Yotsuyu when their attempt at exfiltration of her failed. Less two opposing factions than rivals at court that want the same ends. She must have extremely high level intelligence for the amount of effort they are placing on her return. Also the navigating a promise of “friendship” and not directly acknowledging “sovereignty” seems that the empire seeks to keep Doma in their sphere of influence, as a kind of dependency, like what the Romans or British would do for places that proved too troublesome to directly conquer and rule.
This episode should be called 'That PoS appears' and every final fantasy 14 player will know exactly who you're talking aboutand where in the story you are.
Shockingly I do not trust a word out of that slimy imp's textbox. Imp's lie easier than they breathe. Kill him and his buddies before they can whisper their imp poison in any Doman ears or sow any division in an attempt to weaken and undermine doma in favour of the empire.
Playfriends, today we've got good homecoming, bad homecoming, and a very sus homecoming. This is your spoiler free lore comment!
3:45 – On one hand, preventing an Operational Security (OpSec) risk from continuing is a valid point. On the other hand, having been beaten back at the Ruby Sea, I'm wondering if it's not easier to alter deployments and change security codes/encryptions than keep going after Tsuyu. As time goes on, surely anything Yotsuyu knew would lose value.
10:38 – "I was never here!" [Gosetsu and Yugiri roll up] Buddy, I think that ship has sailed.
11:25 – To remind everyone, all the people in this story are Doman. All activities occurred under Lord Kaien, in a Doman system, albeit under Garlean occupation.
21:15 – On one hand, having Yugiri's identity be known really hampers her ninja credentials, but on the other hand, Yugiri did openly attempt to assassinate Zenos, so maybe some fame is logical.
22:10 – The game is very good about showing that very few groups are a unified front beyond the surface level. Most of the reputation grinds in the game involve working with a moderate or allied branch of a tribe that is hostile us during the MSQ. It makes sense that the Garleans might have various factions vying for power, and some of them might not be expansionist.
What's more, Hien needs to take a chance on Asahi's (yes, his name is similar to the beer) offer for peace talks. As Yugiri noted, an air assault on Doma could crush them. The XIIth Legion was ousted because it spread its forces between Ala Mhigo and Doma. If a single legion was dispatch to retake Doma, Hien would only have the Xaela to shore up their defenses, while Ala Mhigo has the entire Eorzean Alliance.
28:00 – The Doman Enclave is far larger than it appears, and comprises of farmland, a market, and workshops. Or at least, it used to, before the Garleans razed it during the battle to liberate it. It is big enough to have its own aetheryte network.
28:45 – Good to see Hakuro out of Garlean uniform and back to his old job.
29:30 – The Onishishu that Hien mentions are a little known group that operates out of Othard. They maintain Atherytes in the region, but also conduct research on ancient relics of power. Their presence and operations come up more in the Heaven-on-High story (which only encompasses a small number of the lower levels of that deep dungeon).
31:00 – I note that the women in this scene are sitting seiza and the men are not.
Next time: Let's learn more about Asahi sas Brutus.
New Voice Cast:
Matt McCooey, LuBu in Total War: Three Kingdoms and DC Bill Wong in Agatha Raisin, as Asahi sas Brutus
Gotta give 'em credit. They really know how to make someone hateable.
I will have more comments in the future once a certain scene happens, but for just these scenes as presented in this video, this is very well done.
Hien's actions regarding Yotsuyu are perfect given the situation. He is presented with a difficult situation, and he recognizes how much pain would be caused by letting Tsuyu anywhere near the public. He can't do anything more drastic yet, but his initial actions are in the best interests of his people. Good job Hien. As Dan mentions, Hien's facial animations are excellent for these scenes.
Asahi's introduction is good, too. He comes across as both friendly and scheming. He makes tempting offers while still having a subtle air of untrustworthiness to his words. Even without his connection to Garlemald, it would be wise to keep your guard up around Asahi.
So yeah, with regard to this set of scenes, this storyline is doing really well and is quite compelling.
Despite being concocted by the Empire, I am severely disappointed I can't use Eikon Slayer as character title. It is accurate and sounds so good!
Finally, I'm far enough in the MSQ to be able to comment on one of these episodes the same day it came out without spoiling myself on what's to come.
Anyways, uh… I only just got past this point today. Still not sure how I feel about it – it would've been fine if Gosetsu and Yotsuyu died back in Doma Castle, but at the same time I do think I like where things ended up going, but I'm also not at liberty to say anything more detailed about it until we get there, so I won't.
Pat the Durmin.
Dan: "Maybe that's why I've been doing so terribly playing Ninja so far: forgot to put the mask on."
Me: "It's true: all ninjaing is at disadvantage while unmasked."
0:23 Only if you hold grudges.
3:55 Yotsuyu is already dead.
5:05 Like… I hate what happened to Yotsuyu in her past… but I hate this just as much. Memories make us who we are, the good and the bad. This isn't a fresh start for Yotsuyu, this is something else, and it's compounded by the fact nobody trusts her claim of amnesia.
5:27 It's wrong, isn't it?
9:55 Your shinobi mask does… almost nothing, I"m sorry to say.
11:08 …Given her account of her past, you should be flogged.
11:53 By that point, I assume she had, given how her family and, well, the world treated her.
12:16 Which she then used to show the whole of Doma what it means to be as broken as she was. You do deserve to be flogged.
12:36 Well, you have a new chance to atone. Directly. Which would actually be meaningful is Yotsuyu had her memories… except these "great" writers decided to just ditch those.
12:46 Men like you sicken me. I amend my previous statement. You deserve to be drawn and quartered.
13:30 No, you make exactly the point that needs making.
14:31 Ah, but Alisaie, you lack some important details. Jifuya helped create the Yotsuyu that everyone fears, but is too much a coward to face his own reckoning.
14:41 She made an impact… by showing Doma exactly what it means to be as broken as she was… and I can't hate her for that. I can't condone what she did, but I am of a disposition to respect vengeance.
14:54 Oh, so you're fine with scum like him making another Yotsuyu? I don't mean "running a brothel", either. He literally exploited the fact that Yotsuyu was dead inside for personal gain. He's worse than the Monetarists, at least they're honest about their MO. JIfuya should reap the whirlwind he sowed, but likely never will. Disgusting.
20:50 Brutus? Well, I don't trust him now. though Asahi is a good beer.
21:22 Kill him. Kill him now. Mount his head on a spike, or send it back to Garlemald. He deserves so much worse.
25:14 It's extra hollow considering who said it. He got it good while his sister was abused.
28:44 I forgot how huge Hakuro is.
30:06 Man, I'd love to do that at any meeting.
30:54 Alisaie sitting seiza? Surprising, and I'm not sure why.
36:50 Your sister's safe return? Your sister died long before she became vicerine.
39:42 Bargaining piece?! So you'd trample her, too?
41:41 I am also not of the wordsmithing disposition, Alisaie.
I have an odd feeling the tribe of reincarnation would have advice on dealing with Tsuyu. To have tyrants who became shepherds who later became poets, they would have a very interesting view on what she is going through.
