  1. – so Moenbryda & Papalymo are the only ones who have the decency to remain dead, it seems
    – having to visit both Hancock AND Gyodo, Durmin is having to put up with a lot just to meet back with Gosetsu
    – oh… Alphanaud is just setting himself up to get the mother of all roasts from Tataru, the real ZetaFlare is going to be unleashed & Alphanaud can't even begin to comprehend it
    – Tsuyu is gonna be an interesting moral conundrum, as the original Lady Yotsuyu does deserve all the punishment & revenge these people want to inflict on her… but on the other side Tsuyu is basically a different person in anything but appearance, so does she truly deserve it

  2. This is one of my favorite stories in FFXIV. The moral grayness of the entire situation. There really is no right answer. Meanwhile, many are justified in thinking there IS a right, and simple, answer. To use Yotsuyu to show this felt powerful.

  3. "Tsuyu" and Fordor should hang out. Both did horrible things as a result of mistreatment at the hands of their own people and the Garleans taking the opportunity to twist them into a force of hate, and both are in a position of redemption. It's just in Fordor's case she's not sure she deserves it because of the evil she did and in Yotsuyu's case she doesn't remember the evil she did.

  4. Playfriends, today we're going back east to see how Doma's rebuilding. This is your spoiler free lore comment!

Patch 4.2, "Rise of a New Sun" was released at the end of January 2018. This patch introduced the Sigmascape section of the Omega Raids.

0:48 – If Lyse is comfortable enough to make this kind of joke, it seems like she and Raubahn are getting along swell. It's always good to have this level of camaraderie among your officer corps.

5:20 – The Dead! They Walk Among Us!

8:00 – When Hancock says "the best money can buy", and then smiles like this, I'm wondering if we're picking up the tab and how bad it's going to be.

9:45 – The Sanjo Hanamachi is the "Flower District", where the Geiko reside. The Geiko are young women who dance and entertain wealthy men. Geiko is the Kyoto term for the more widely known Geisha.

10:55 – Wow Hancock. This is the best your gil can buy? I think Alisaie and I are on the same wavelength, one wrong move and we warm up the Ver-Air Fryer.

17:20 – "It's one Katana, how much could it cost?" – Alphinaud, apparently

22:15 – This lack of trade acumen is a new trait for Alphinaud and might be a bit exaggerated here. It does fill in a flaw for Alphinaud, and conforms to some of his "little lordling" background, but it does create an odd plot hole from the last patch. Alphinaud helped account for the treasure buried in Skalla and advised the negotiation for the Saltery. While it could be said that Alphinaud knows his financial sense in a larger macroeconomic scale, allowing him to advise on percentages and contracts, if he doesn't bother to even check the price on Gosetsu's katana, this means his personal ability to count gil is lacking. I'd start to wonder if he valued the artifacts brought up from Skalla correctly. Perhaps the likely story reason is that Alphinaud is decent with figures and sums when he's detached from the issue, but becomes wildly loose with the purse strings when it comes to emotional attachment. After all, it's not his gil he's spending, it's the Scions's! Which means Tataru gets to keelhaul him.

26:34 – Every time I get to this cutscene, I mentally insert a loud THUD as Alphinaud dives off the edge onto a dock. It's a joke form the film The Man from U.N.C.L.E (2015), and I love it.

27:25 – Yes, Ninjas do the Naruto run in the game, and they have the fastest normal move speed. I do wonder if the new Viper job for Dawntrail will share the move speed or the run.

34:00 – Do you execute someone for their crimes, if they don't remember it? Does memory hold all your are, or are hands soaked in blood forever sullied, never to be cleansed? Does a loss of identity constitute a death already?

40:00 – Oh don't worry Soroban, I'm certain Durmin will be back soon. Tataru will need him to.

Today's a light lore day, but I'll make it up with a bit of an announcement! Starting 11 November, at 1400 PST (2200 UTC), Desert Bus for Hope rides again! And once again, Carrie Floyd will be one of many entertainers on the 0600-1200 PST shift! Tune in at twitch.tv/desertbus and provide challenges and donate at DesertBus.org! There are also prizes! Fans of FFXIV might be interested in a giveaway of a NA Fanfest gift satchel, or a big live auction on 14 November at 1500 PST of a replica Antiquated Murgleis Red Mage Rapier! That's right a live auction for a 150 cm cosplay blade!

Next time: Hien is reunited with his old friend, and must ponder the dilemma before him as both sovereign and warrior.

  5. While this storyline was obviously planned out based on the after-credits scene from the base expansion, I greatly dislike this storyline and feel that Gosetsu and Yotsuyu's story should have ended in Doma Castle. They had good character arcs (at least in Gosetsu's case) and good characterization (in Yotsuyu's case). Their ending in Doma Castle was a satisfying end to their stories in my mind.

I'll wait to fully pass judgment until I have seen the storyline again in its entirety, but I definitely had some feelings when playing this the first time.

  6. It is impossible for any reasonable person to hold Tsuyu accountable for Yotsuyu's actions, she lacks Yostuyu's memory and motivation. Tsuyu retains nothing of Yotsuyu not character, morality, ethics, trauma, valuable, or privilege. They are not the same person.
For all intents and purposes, Tsuyu is innocent of Yotsuyu's crimes; the woman whom the people of Doma detest perished when the castle crumbled. Tsuyu shouldn't have to bear the weight of evils in which she was not involved regardless of who's face she wears. To shun her would be to shun an innocent, making the domans the monsters.
Unless Yotsuyu is just Primal Fear-ing everybody…

  7. To be fair to Gosetsu, he's had a time. Fought, shot, drowned, and castle dropped on him. But still… it frustrates me to no end that when he got to Kugane, he didn't just go to the East Aldernard Trading Company to send us a message, instead of selling his sword. I suppose we only had a single meeting there, but asking if they could help or get a message to us is just so clear a way to try to improve his situation.

  8. I see the title, and I'm already stoked, spiced with slight concern at possible brain damage or still more trauma for (Yo)tsuyu.
0:49 That's terrible, Lyse. I mean, puns are terrible by default, but wow.
    2:38 Good!
3:52 Dan/Durmin has no sense for protocol.
5:57 Oh, I can't wait for you guys to meet her. She's adorable now.
7:00 Punch Garleans and track down possibly best girl? Lemme at em!
8:03 You trust him less, and I just get concerned.
11:58 It's only a katana for a Roegadyn, for us normal folk it's a bloody nodachi. Also, I'd like to point out that a samurai pawning his badge of office (basically) is a huge deal.
19:05 While I respect his decision, tea is also great and comes in many flavours.
19:28 Ah, sort of… more like "former employers". I suspect her family's been dead a while.
19:47 I also find it weird how… openly Yugiri is dropping Yotsuyu's name.
    22:13 Y'know… that's about the reaction I expected. Should've let Durmin buy.
33:17 Yea, Gosetsu, my dude, you have a very Jack Sparrow story.
33:44 I genuinely hate this. Does it make sense? Yes. Is it also a cop out trope that's been done to death? Yes. Does it remove any actual redemption or agency from Yostuyu? You bet. She's stripped of all her gravitas, confidence, and presence and reduced to a child. Benedikta got better in 16.
35:33 I only share the sentiment because it's not Yotsuyu annymore, and I really liked Yotsuyu… when she wasn't actively being a lunatic. I'd also like to point out that Yotsuyu arguably had more reason to be off her rocker than Fordola. Fordola got it bad, don't get me wrong… but Yotsuyu's family abused her, and by her account basically everyone walked over her until she snapped… and she opted to return the favour. I can't hate her for that, reaping the whirlwind and all that.
    37:35 Our apologies and thanks.
39:30 It's called "Character assassination", iirc.
40:20 Oh, you sweet summer child.
