Durmin finally meats Susano, and thus it is a occasion TO REJOICE!!
Susano is one of those fights that I queue into every now and then just for the joy of it, it’s so good
If I remember correctly, t here was a whole sidequest chain to get one of the manta rays as permanent mounts…
Chao'tic Carrie is here to bring the fire!
How I wish they had got Brian Blessed for Susano. Still, good job, voice actor.
LET THE RRRREVEL BEGIN!
Hands down my favorite initial Primal encounter. Like I still viscerally remember the WOW factor when the giant sword came down. All the previous primals were fun but this was just the spectacle experience up till then and honestly probably a big reason why I liked stormblood so much
Susano! The Lord of Revelry! If anyone reading this has yet to try doing Extremes, I consider it a decent place to start, actually. I got in a Party Finder group that did it on the 1st pull. With multiple newcomers, might I add.
Fun fact: the three Sacred Treasures are a reference to the Imperial Regalia of Japan, said to be given to the Imperial family by the gods. The Sword, Kusanagi-no-Tsurug, which translates to Grasscutter, passed through the hands of the god Susanoo-no-Mikoto, who presides over the sea and storms, among other things. Susanoo gave the sword to Amaterasu by way of apology, who in turn gifted it to the Imperial Family.
And before anyone asks, no, Grasscutter is not a katana, predating that style of sword.
Oh, and of course, the sword you have to attack, Ame-no-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi, is one of the names of Grasscutter.
"stormy again" the expansion is called stormblood dan ;p
so, blitzball soon?
Brazilian souls, I salute you!
Ah, Susano! The mascot of my FC! (The Wanderer's Revel on Famfrit!) This is absolutely one of my favorite trial fights. The EX is pretty fun, if with a lot of lightning around. It's a good time.
Also, you can block the sword as any class! Block it with your book? With your fists? Do it!
REVELRY!!! Was so excited to join in and DPS this trial. This series got me to finally play 14, and I am beyond happy to have experienced this wonderful gem. Now…to Yanxia!!!!
Alisaie and Alphinaud are the A-Team? I… really should have seen this coming.
In the cutscene where she considers going back to help Alisaie until she arrives, we can see that Lyse is clearly still dealing with the trauma and guilt from Paplymo's death. And the story clearly communicates that WITHOUT explicitly telling us! How does this MMO have better storytelling than most video games – hell, most anime?
3:51 Are the other two a sword and mirror, by any chance?
5:46 Nah, her brother needs those constant jabs.
11:33 Haaaah, called it. I really do like the sword stand, too.
16:15 Oh, that wasn't a stand… that's just part of the sword…
18:41 When'd you pick that one up, Alisaie? Because I assure you, there's a least 7 Playfriends out there, or will be soon.
25:21 i think that's the largest incarnation of Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi I've ever seen.
26:48 I understood that reference.
34:37 Why do you of all people have to look good?
46:09 You might consider investing in some makeshift AAA, or the Garlean airships will make short work of your boats.
25:01 I have a very fun first-time memory of this phase of the fight
I was playing AST and did not know what to expect at all.
I used Collective Consciousness at the last moment when the sword went down, and it stopped precisely on the edge of my bubble !
Even though perfectly knew CU is not supposed to that, I thought that somehow I had perfect-parried the sword; I dared not drop the shield until I noticed the tank further down the blade.
SUSANO!!!! FOR REVELRY AND CHAOS!!!
Susano.. which means… primal lores…
Now, as Bunchin stated in this episode and the last, the divine is quite literally everywhere- in objects and nature, and even the people. Thus, the Kojin- and others in the Far East- worship no single god, but rather many. Susano- being obviously based on the japanese god Susanoo-no-Mikoto, god of the sea, storms, the harvest, and various other things- is just one of these gods.
"Out of all the kami that exist in Far Eastern mythology, none is so revered as Susano. The mythology says the first kami born were Amaterasu, the god of day and the sun, Tsukuyomi, divinity of the night and the moon, and Susano, who came into existence as the god of the sea. However, Susano is also seen in other myths as a great hero, slaying many ancient villains in a time when the gods walked the land. On his grand journey he acquired several sacred treasures, the most coveted by the Kojin being the mirror Yata-no-Kagami, the talisman Yasakani-no-Magatama, and the katana Ame-no-Murakumo. The Kojin have worshipped this deity for untold generations, aspiring to bring together his three great treasures."
These treasures mentioned, which holds his essence, is based on the imperial regalia of japan; Ame-no-Murakumo is based on the sword Kusanagi no Tsurugi, which is valor- the Yata no Kagami being a mirror of wisdom, and the Yasakani no Magatama being a jewel of benevolence. Susanoo is also one of my favorite primals, part due to his cool design, the DPS phase, and his fun-first personality (plus he's voiced by Urianger's VA, which is an added bonus.)
I also like to joke here that the WoL accidentally summoned a primal. At least this blunder has brought a really fun fight, and forced the Red to retreat. Durmin truly did his part.
Truly, Alphinaud and Alisae are the A-Team.
I genuinely feel Susano and Ravana (from Heavensward) would be best sword battle friends
SUSANO the primal I most desperately need an Egi of. I long to revel, and show him all the glorious fights this star has to offer.
Susano is likely my favourite trial. The fact that he is SUPER down for a good fight is always a nice moment, and the fight itself is just a beautiful spectacle. Might help that first time through I was playing a tank and someone told me to "click on the thing when the thing appears".
– the subtlety on Allisei's hints, that's some Norn levels of reading ahead the script
– i love Susano he's such a fun guy, we need more Primals that just want to have a fun time
– a maritime barkeep that never watered down their drinks? that gentleman is a hero
– see? they got to free their comrades AND rob the Garleans, this was a good deal for the Confederacy
– i mean the expansion is called STORMblood for a reason
I see that ??? has a highly jovial variant of Big Ravana Energy.
Playfriends, it's time to revel in the glory of combat! This is your spoiler free lore comment!
So the Blue Kojin want Durmin to raid the enemy treasure vault. This seems pretty typical, force them into a panic about an important piece of their territory and force them to withdraw their forces assisting the Garleans. This is just weird that it's a raid to put something in a treasure vault, instead of removing something. But the Blue Kojin have their beliefs, and this works all the same. Wait a minute…. Belief. And Aether. Whoops! Time to fight a Primal! If you're wondering, this happy Primal is voiced by Timothy Watson. That's right, Susano is Urianger!
Susano is named for Susanoo-no-Mikoto, a Shinto god of seas and storms. He is known as the brother of Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi. This appears to be his first appearence in Final Fantasy. For details on the treasures that make up Susano, I suggest checking out the comment from @adamboyd1132. Some good references to the Imperial Regalia of Japan!
20:00 – The "Wandering Minstrel" that is described here is one the in-universe avatar of Yoshi-P, who spins ballads about the Warrior of Light's adventures, forming the basis of the Extreme versions of the many Trials Durmin has overcome. I also love the lampshade hanging of why 7 other adventurers would happen to show up to help Durmin fight a Primal.
25:10 – Back when this trial was new, only tanks had the wherewithal to parry Susano's blade, but I think with modern gear levels, even DPS players can withstand the damage. It's still smart for tanks to do it, because that allows the most DPS to deflect the blade quickly. The AOE orbs that spawn during this sequence are supposed to be popped at a safe distance by the off tank, but again, they do so little damage these days that few pay them any heed. These issues return when playing the fight at minimum item level.
33:20 – This moment reiterates a running theme. The actions of the brave can have consequences for the innocent. Gosetsu is fortunate that the Confederacy retakes Isari in this moment.
36:00 – Durmin's walk here is hilarious. Lalafell are cute, no matter how menacing they try to be with normal animations. Meanwhile, Alisaie provides an excellent demonstration of the Red Mage's melee combo. And yes, all Red Mages look this cool, not just Alisaie.
40:08 – HUG TECHNOLOGY! Even if they're cheating with the camera perspective and it's not a custom animation, we rejoice in every time someone does a hug in this game. Hug Technology is so rarely employed that every hug is precious.
With the Garleans thrown from the Ruby Sea, and the Confederacy assisting with Durmin's covert efforts to bolster Doma, we're making real progress! Perhaps the first real progress since the Battle of Rhalgr's Reach. It's too bad that Yotsuyu managed to flee the melee. Next time, Durmin enters Doma!
WE R-R-R-REVEL~L~L!
💙
The way Susano keeps laughing during battle gives me very strong Dung Defender vibes.
The only appropriate comment for this is: "How our hearts sing in the chaos!" Nothing will make you feel more awesome as a tank than blocking the sword in this fight. Also, always good to see Chaos Carrie references.
OH and the One River is one like the number one. AFAIK it's never spoken in a cutscene, but we know this from the other language translations. In German, for instance, it is "Der Einzig," which means the Only, and in the French version they call it the "Muni" river, where muni means "peerless" in Japanese.
I love that Primals are now more a small part of the story instead of the main focus. It makes it much more interesting when they pop up now
All in all, a successful outing for Team Punch!
Minor spoilers, if you haven't watched the episode yet.
If so, what are you doing down here?
Stop reading the comments and get back to watching Durmin do Durmin things.
Susano'o is my favorite of all bosses from a character presentation standpoint. Some Primals wish for domination, subjugation, and other unpleasant times for their followers and anyone adjacent to them. Susanoo is just happy to be here and is hype that someone is tough enough to give him a good time. Ravana is a close second for me though a bit more imperialistic and down for that hivemind servitude shenanigans. But both of them are just good happy bois. Violent good happy bois, but good happy bois nonetheless.
Susano was great, bug dumb sword parry was kino
Also The imperial regalia of Japan inspire many things in fiction, including the lake trio from Pokémon. Each regalia has an assigned virtue, the mirror is wisdom (Acuity so Uxie), the magatama is benevolence (Verity so Mespirit), and the sword is valour so Azelf.
lmao, I love that, for getting their rock back, they give you what is essentially a magical letter opener, "a tool which unseals anything" XD.
Ooh. Let's have some revelry!
Always a joy when Susano shows up in my Rooulettes!
Idk who Susano is being voiced by, but I LOVE HIM.
I know I'm way late on this and trying to avoid spoilers but I've always been of two minds about Yatsuo. She is a complete monster, no doubtr about it, but, at the same time, when you learn her backstory….
I mean its a common thing with FF games but still…
It's debatable whether Big S even is a primal since, no temperance. No ritual to summon him. Faith, granted but spur of the moment like that? Somethings weird here.
