  1. For what it's worth, I was happy looking for Alisae first, it gave more than enough time for Alisae to browbeat the Exarch some more while I navigated Kholusia's politics.

  2. 5:52 If you watch a Gigantender long enough it will attempt to do the classic Sabotender pose, but then nearly fall over because of how top-heavy it is. You can see one do this at this timestamp.

8:49 If you're looking for raid gear, you can buy clothes at the Souq store! That meme was still popular when this expansion was released.

  3. Playfriends, time for the red twin! This is your spoiler free lore comment.

4:56 – If you prefer to think of it this way, the unnatural light is only radiating in the visible spectrum, not the infrared (heat) or ultraviolet.

6:10 – Nabaath Areng was an oasis trade hub here in this arid land. The city state stretched across the desert, with local mines helping feed its forges. All of this, of course, should sound very familiar to an Ul'dah native like Durmin. Much like Kholusia was an analogue for La Noscea, Ahm Araeng is an analogue for Thanalan.

8:08 – The problem that Dan is running into is that the in game map for players doesn't allow for good comparisons between the First and the Source, because both only show player accessible areas. When shown the entire map of Norvrandt by folks like Moren, it's obvious that both Eorzea and Norvrandt are broadly the same geographically.

9:05 – Mord Souq meaning the Mord City. Mords being what the source calls Kobolds.

12:45 – "You'll need to gain the trust of the locals" "Ooooh, side quests!" "Wha- no, they're merchants, you *buy things*"

13:25 – Looks like the Exarch spared no expense…

15:15 – Fun fact: you can target Rhon Ron in this sequence. They're very adamant that Mords are not for eating.

16:45 – I usually go for the glazed wrigglers. I just figure that honey glazed snacks travel better. They're probably like honey walnut shrimp. Right?

24:52 – Alisaie must talk a lot about Durmin. She's strictly painting word pictures though, we know the drawing talents lie with her brother.

37:45 – Light isn't just some ethereal substance here. It's physical: a solid, a liquid, a gas. Here at the what was once Nabaath Areng, it is a solid crystal.

39:05 – And now we know what a Sin Eater is. It is an animal, or more distressingly, a person, who has been tainted by a surfeit of light. And then they go on to hunt others, to perpetuate their kind. And the Inn at Journey's Head is not the poetic name for a rest stop. It is hospice care.

Next time: We get to discuss end of life care.

  4. While there's a degree of sympathy that's definitely owed to people with a lethal condition, that compassion should probably be restrained in cases where when they do die from it, they'll become dangerous monsters.

If someone's bitten by a zombie, you don't encourage them to keep sleeping in the next room while you wait for them to turn… At least not unless you're hoping to become one yourself…

  5. Just a small correction, since you seemed to doubt yourself while going over the world map- Kholusia does line up with where Vylbrand (aka Limsa Isle) would be in the Source, while Ahm Araeng lines up with Ul'dah, and Lakeland with Mor Dhona!

Getting bigger maps of Norvrandt and Eorzea helps with this, but they are absolutely meant to be parallels!

  7. When Dan made the joke about how he didn't beat the Exarch at cards, but he could have because he's so good, at first I thought he was confusing this Final Fantasy game for the other one he's playing on weekdays. Then I remembered that, in fact, this game had also just introduced a card game in the last episode or two.
It can be hard to keep track.

  8. – so, basically the layer of Magic light in the sky has to be at a very low altitude if Weather can still happen but not be seen
    – fun fact, because deserts are so bad at regulating heat Nights reach bellow 0 Celcius temperatures very regularly, so yeah imagine how dissorienting it must be for be Scorching hot & then Freezing Cold while it's still as bright as noon
    – i love that the Beastmen get to live along the rest of the people in The First, especially the Kobolds, they're funny little guys
    – Durmin, i don't think you're supposed to eat all 40 loaves of Cactus Bread at once
    – seeing the Flood of Light so up close is both mesmerizing & frightening
    – so Sin Eaters are mirror universe Heartless then
-well Alisaie says the Sin Eaters can't be reasoned with, however, someone in Eulemore seems to have found a way

  9. I really love the design of Amh Araeng. Of course all throughout Norvrandt we see the aftermath of the Flood, but here? This is where Minfillia and Ardbert's friends made their stand. I love the buildings frozen in time, caught up in crystalized Light. And the Inn as well. Caring for the afflicted to make their final days comfortable. It's a really horribly bleak area and it's fantastic.

  10. Well… it finally happened. A buddy at work was increasingly talking about it, and between him, and Shadowbringer starting here I took the plunge. Only the free trial atm, but my bard (for now) is level 37 and working my way to the Titan fight (did a lot of side quests before finally getting to some of the MSQ; was 20 already when I went to do Sastasha and got the exp boost ring from the guy that teaches you how to do dungeons). Depending on how well it sticks… Dantalis Theater Company could have a new applicant in the next few weeks.

  11. So Exarch, why did you give Durmin what appears to be a king's ransome as a gift for the ceremonial custom of Mord Souq? Did you not trust Durmin to work his usual interpersonal magic and wanted to make sure he made an impression with the people of Amh Arangh as worthy of business, at least? A little overbearing, don't you think?

  12. 6:08 Really wish I could pinpoint the architecture. It looks familiar, but I can't place it.
13:22 A mistake has been made.
16:00 I'll take the whole plate and some of the steaks. Cactus fruits are good, as is cactus itself.
17:10 That's the realisation of "oh no, this is my food for a while". He basically got handed forty burrito-sized stuffed pitas. Forty.
19:18 The hell did he season it with? It's cactus fruit, it should be delicious.
39:02 Is that what they meant in Kholusia by "ascension"?

  13. Ah yes Amh Araeng, the zone I always go to first because I feel like Alisaie would hit me if I didn't, and our mirror Thanalan. So what's their parallel? Rather than a real of unwanted refugees, and merchants looking to steal your pants out from under you, we have sin eater hospice, and a civilization where trade is used to help everyone get what they need. I feel like it is the least of the shadow bringers zones, not my least favorite(we'll get there) but generally speaking you could say this all happens just outside of lakeland, and no one would notice without listening. Still that emptiness is the point, and I'm sure in a later episode we can get into the things that are here. It's just hard to draw parallels without grasping at straws, but with how important Ul'Dah is you could count that as a difference.

Also Dan if you want to see the places line up 1 to 1, try the world map, not the area map. The full color one you get if you tab up one more level.

  14. so, fun fact: "souq" is an Arabic word for bazaar. The translators love to use unusual words, but Shadowbringers particularly leans into this; there's some very surprising references to classical Western literature in some of the naming.

  15. 8:20 This is one of the things I really like about Norvrandt, and the First in general – although they have the same "stuff" as Eorzea, the same basic landmasses with similar climates, the same sapient beings, etc., they are completely different in culture, art, architecture etc. There is an alternate version of this story in which all the places in Norvrandt were all directly connected to a place in Eorzea that is in my opinion much less interesting for that. It's much cooler to see all this diversity…and it also makes the loss of the Flood of Light feel so much more palpable, just the sheer amount of stuff that was lost.

  16. I do not think there could be a geographic mapping from the source to the first.

Possible minor spoilers below, I forget my timelines on when things are learned.

The source has been re-joined and gone through calamities that the first hasn't. One of which was a major flood (of water) that would have had major impacts on geography. And this is only the one we know of, I imagine if there was any other elements used to re-join they would have had their own impressive impact on the geography.
